Sweeney, D.D., Bishop of Honolulu, Born in San Francisco, Cali- fornia, June 19, 1898. Educated at St. James School in San Francisco, and St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park, California. Ordained priest June 20, 1925. Served in San Francisco parishes and made Director of the Propagation of the Faith office in San Francisco. Appointed first Bishop of the new Diocese of Honolulu on May 20, 1941, and consecrated Bishop on July 25, 1941. In his 17 years of episcopacy, our good bishop has labored unceasingly in the expansion of Catholic education in the Islands. The Reverend Leonard Mclean Fee, S.M., is the Provincial Superior of the Pacific Province. Fr. Fee succeeded the Very Reverend Walter C. Tred- tin, S.M., in August, 1956. The Provincial was born in 1908 at Buffalo, New York. ln 1927 he was accepted into the novitiate of the Society of Mary and the follow- ing year he professed vows as a Marianist. Four years later he made his perpetual profession as a Marianist at Dayton, Ohio: and in October, 1938, he was ordained a priest after four years of study at the Pontifical University of Fribourg in Switzerland. Fr. Fee, who has a Master's degree in Education from the Catholic University of America, has served as teacher and chaplain of Cathe- dral Latin School, Cleveland, Ohio, and was principal of Purcell High School, Cincinnatti, Ohio, from 1941 to 1946. Most Reverend John J. Scanlan, D.D. Auxiliary Bishop of Honolulu His Excellency the Most Reverend John J. Scanlan, D.D., Auxiliary Bishop of Honolulu. Born in lnniscara, County Cork, Ireland, on May 24, 1906, Educated in Ireland at All Hallows Seminary for service in the Archdiocese of Sen Francisco, California, Ordained a priest on June 22, 1930, in Ireland. Worked in vari- ous San Francisco parishes until his appointment on July 8, 1954, as Auxiliary to Bishop Sweeney. He was consecrated a Bishop on September 21, 1954. He is pastor of the Cathedral parish. Father Stephen Tutas, S.M., is The Director of the Marianist Commu- nity at St. Louis High School and Chaminade Col- lege. Father Tutas ioined the Society of Mary in 1944 and received his AB. degree from the University of Dayton three years later. From 1947 to 1949 he was on the faculty of Saint Louis High School. During the next five years he studied at the International Seminary of the Marianists in Fribourg, Svutzerland. After a brilliant career as a student, he was ordained and received the degree of licentiate in Sacred Theology.
