it 1, lg' won 9.4, The whittlers were an ambitious group. At various spare moments throughout the year the boys could be seen taking their knives in hand and carving intricate def signs. Even during the lunch periods they engaged in their hobby. Under the skillful direction of Brother Henry Fleinick they deftly mastered the complicated tricks of the trade. First they took a block of wood. Then with a sharp whittler's knife they dexterously drove into the piece. The chips began to fly and the shavings to curl until there emerged an artistic bit of handiwork. Throughout the year contests for be- ginners, as well as for advanced members, were held. New whittling knives and beau- tifully finished carved obiects, Brother Henry's own work, were the awards for the best compositions. From its very inception many years ago the Whittling Club, under Brother Henry's skillful direction, has been a source of recreation and education for many. xhu Bro. Fleinick shows them how. Kami To close the year with proof ot great musical talents, the members of the hand presented to the public and students a band concert at McKinley High School auditorium on May 22. Besides playing at assemblies and toot- ball games, the band was always on hand to greet any distinguished visitors to St. Louis College with true Hawaiian spirit of hospitality. The band has carried the St. Louis colors on many and varied occasions. The grad- uates of this year hope that the under- classmen will maintain the honor and prestige of this organization. --y-I I NDING, left to right: R. Choy, T. Trinidad, L. Da Silva, N. Under the able guidance of Brother Charles Cummingsmith, the boys skillfully performed the daily round of duties, too often unappreciated, that are connected with the operation of an efficient library. Both Brother Charles and the boys contributed unstintingly of their time and services to satisfy the needs of a varied, and sometimes overzealous, student body. Many were the tasks that called for sac- rifice of much time and energy. These serv- ices ranged from the complicated clerical duties at the checking desk of recording the out-going books to the placing of re- turned books to the stacks. Inquiries, fool ish, useful and otherwise, were answered with courtesy and efficiency. New bcoks to the library were catalogued and well dis- played to the observation of prospective readers. Magazines were set in the racks prepared for them, for reference informa- tion. Such, and many mcre, were the indis- pensable services rendered to the school. For this generous work, Brother Charles and the staff deserve a special note of praise, and gratitude from the faculty and students. I 1 Looking over the latest periodicals. Studious boys.
