Although the struggle was difficult at times, you had before you the motivation of those responsible for your guidance. The guidance and example of your teachers, who are consecrated to the cause of the Christian education of youth, was the stimulus which urged you on to greater effort. lt was their devotedness and willingness to help, not only in the classroom but in the extra-curricular activities as well, which supplied the incentive always to move forward. Our sincere congratulations to you upon this happy Occasion and every best Wish for your success in your future endeavors. We are, today, passing through a crisis in the international scene and our present concern is the preservation of democracy, our American way of life. Democracy is the only way of life that makes possible the full and free use of knowledge in solving our present day problems. But, in all the difficulties you will encounter as you leave the halls of your Alma Mater, your only safe and reliable anchor is religion. Strive manfully, then, and do your part wellg it is your duty. But, remember that worldly success is often disappointing. , May the true ideals of Catholic education guide you through life, may it sweeten your hours of triumph and strengthen your days of adversity. May our Heavenly Father crown your future efforts with success and may Mary, our Mother, protect and watch over you. LEO S. RAUSCH, S.M. The nine-scene tableau depicted the life of Father William Chaminade and brought to the student body a better appreciation of the Founder of the So- ciety of Mary. Highlight of the year's activities for the Scdalists was the feast of Qur Lady of Lourdes when forty-two new members were installed in a religious ceremony in the school chapel. One of the outstanding achievements this past year has been the formation of the Rifle Team. Under the instruction of Maior Francis Aiwchi and Staff Sergeant loseph Silva, the members quickly mastered the fundamentals of rifle shooting and a charter was granted by the National Rifle Association. In the interscholastic competition St. Louis, competing for the first time, garnered 1694 points to take second place next to McKinley. Kenneth Wong, a sophomore student, was the sharp- shooter of the meet. He set a new interscholastic small bore record of l82 points out of a possible 200. Both Brother Charles and the boys contributed unstintingly of their time and services to satisfy the needs of a varied, and sometimes overzealous, student body. Many were the tasks that called for sac- rifice of much time and energy. These serv- ices ranged from the complicated clerical duties at the checking desk of recording the out-going books to the placing of re- turned books to the stacks. Inquiries, fool ish, useful and otherwise, were answered with courtesy and efficiency. New bcoks to the library were catalogued and well dis- played to the observation of prospective readers. Magazines were set in the racks prepared for them, for reference informa- tion. Such, and many mcre, were the indis- pensable services rendered to the school. Composed mainly of sophomores and fresh- men the junior squad ran up a record of four wins and two losses against more experienced and older teams to finish third in the junior interscholastic league. Art Machado and Tom Takamori handled the boys skillfully and got the most out of the young- sters who will graduate to the varsity next sea- son. The junior varsity defeated Maryknoll won from Punahou rolled over Roosevelt and squealced by lolani. It tied the powerful Mc- Kinley squad and the Kairnuki bulldogs. lt lost to the champion Kams and Farrington. The team had power and used the T shift to the single wing effectively against T teams.
