A squad looked sharp in their new sweaters with the black “P’s.” After much concentration, the Boys squad did their specialty, a very high pyramid with three on the bottom, three more on their shoulders and one on top, all standing. “Push ’em, push 'em. Higher, higher, echoed over and over again. It was practice, practice, practice, until each Parkette knew the routine so well she saw the steps in her sleep. Practicing for perfection, improving dancing style and learning cheers took a lot of time. But Toni Swiggum, director, always said, “The more you put into it, the more you get out of it. Putting more into it meant more than just dancing and cheering, it was competing in parades and performing for luncheons. Two girls. Eve Bearman and Pam Swiggum, competed in the Battle of the NFL Cheerleaders. They received first place in their division and second place all around. In school, the Parkettes performed at coronation, basketball, and football games. There was more than kicks and splits for the 1979-1980 Parkettes. It was modeling, competing, and working hard.
