Before the senior class presented its play, the editors threw the rule book out of the window and proved that you can fool all of the people some of the time by printing a really different April Fool's Day issue telling of the mythical swimming pool and the state basketball champion- ship, an honor which only the Echo could give Park. The editors admit that editing 17 issues of the Echo seemed like a lifetime job, but now that the year is at a close, they say that they are certainly glad they had the chance both for the fun derived and for the experience. We're grateful to Miss Isacson, Miss Dillon and Mr. Welke for patiently explaining the hows and whys of making a year book. We did enjoy making the book, though, and we hope you will overlook faults and enjoy it, too-now and in future years. 2 ,mv I THE STAFF Ianet Nelson ------ Ioanna Brown - Ioy Larsen - - - Beverly Moeger - Ann Mork - - - Bruce Christensen - Iulia Swanson - Dick Iamieson - Elsie Syverson - Ardith Fountain - Editor-in-Chief Literary Editor Business Manager Art Editor Art Editor Sports Editor Sports Editor Photographer Typist Typist LEADERSHIP CLUB Not one, not two, but all the members of this club are presidents or leaders of all the organizations in the school. This Board of Strategy comes to Mr. Kuhlman's office with their own desks, pens, and pencils to learn parlia- mentary procedure, and to discuss conditions around the halls and building. How can we improve them? That's a good question, one frequently raised in their discussions. It is invariably answered and the problem is solved by the talented members of the Leadership Club. Basically, this club is to acquaint club leaders with the duties which they as presidents of their various clubs must fulfill. That which they leam and discuss at their meetings, they take back to their own clubs: thereby making each club better, this resulting in more student participation in all the organizations. Q Q L. With the list of things needed for the year submitted by the Senior Red Cross, the members ol this division oi the organization started their year of helpful activities. Holidays such as Washington's Birthday, Christmas, New Year's Day, and Valentine's Day were the themes for their activities. Representatives volunteered to make such articles as tray covers and carnival hats. The Blue and Silver Tris also volunteered to help. They made mittens which were put in gilt boxes packed in the home rooms. Everyone in each home room tried to bring something to put in these boxes, such as a tooth brush, soap, or a wash cloth. Each box was filled with items to accommodate one child. All of these boxes went some place where they could do the most good and make some youngster more happy. Club, the operators club, showed a grand total of about 500 reels this year, these reels being seen by a total of over 44,000 high school students! Not only were these films seen by high school students but by St. Louis Park's elementary grade students as well. The purpose of the A.V.A. Club is to learn the techniques of visual aid and to make visual aid more interesting to students. This year will forever be marked as a year of progress, for it was the beginning of a permanent library which will contain films to be available at all times. This. of course. will save rentals and transportation problems. Heading this department, the finest of its kind in the Northwest. is Mr. Welke, whose expert work in this field has become known throughout the Northwest and other parts of the United States. CAMERA CLUB The purpose of the Camera Club is to inform the stu- dents of the fundamentals and fine points of photography. The beginners learned the parts of a camera, how to develop print, and how to take good pictures. The advanced group studied more complicated work such as how to dodge. vignette, and recognize good composition. In order to be an active, voting member in the club, each person is required to take and develop a picture every month. This gives them much necessary experience. The activities for the year included an after school hike at Theodore Wirth Park and a party in the band room. Every- one brought some article which was used in table top photography. Later in the evening, refreshments were served. Many of the pictures taken by the members of this group went to make this book an enjoyable and interesting one. 4th ROW: C. Butter. I. Behonek. B. This includes learning to shelve and slip books and to check books in and out for other students. During the year the club made several trips to other libraries where they were told the ways in which libraries were run so that the club members could compare our library with others. The girls have been unfortunate this year in the respect that their president resigned and that the Secretary's book containing the constitution and charter was lost. The vice president took over the presidency, and the members have written a complete new consti- tution and charter. Mrs. Elstrom of the Wenderly Manufacturing Company spoke to the members at a meeting during the middle of the year. With the information gained from this speaker and with the loyal help of Mrs. Iohnson, the head librarian. the members have gained a lot of valuable experience. SPANISH CLUB El Circulo de Espanol reorganized this year after a lapse of three years. The activities of the year started off with a Mexican movie at the University ot Minnesota entitled: Asi se Quiere en Ialisco. a talkie in Spanish. One of the final meetings of the year was spent in making a pinata for the pinata party at which the members thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A pinata is a large decorated jar which contains candies and is hung from the ceiling. Each person has a turn at breaking the iar blindfolded. As soon as the iar is broken. everyone dives for the candy. Those members who took Spanish several years ago often have a little trouble following all the talk that goes on at the meetings which are sometimes carried on in Spanish, but it is this type ot experience which best enables them to feel at ease if. some day. they should have an opportunity to visit Latin America or, perhaps. Spain. Sth ROW: I. Veilleux, I. Kuntz, P. Wood- ward. E. Buble. B. Beck. P. Houck G. Germaine. 4th ROW: B. Beck. I. Nelson, I. Brown N. Miles, M. Maund. M. Whitaker N. Warner. 3rd HOW: D. Bunkle, I. The members belong to the senior art class and carry on much oi their work during this period. The goal oi each member this year was to leam as much as possible about art and to promote art appreciation and understanding. The students tumed out posters, advertisements, and decorations for various activities throughout the year. Decorations designed and made by the Brush and Palette decked the halls during the Christmas season. During the year the club displayed its work in school showcases, and many students had their work recognized in art contests. The club met every two weeks during class period. In April a dinner was held at the Hasty Tasty for the alumni. CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP CLUB The Christian Fellowship Club is a comparatively new club, having been organized only two years ago. Its purpose is to bring together all senior high school students interested in having a good time singing, studying the Bible, and hearing young people from similar organizations tell about the activities of their clubs. This year's theme was Living Christianity Seven Days a Week. 3 2nd ROW: P. Hauglid, I. Dron. B. Beck B. Beck. P. Beal. lst BOW: B. Granum, I. Davenport, I Perrin, S. Iohnson. The first few weeks were spent in getting acquainted with the relatively new director and accustomed to the changes in every routine. The glee club made its first public appearance at the P.T.A. Open House on November 7. This was iust the beginning of a very active year. Following were two school appearances: Armistice Day program and the Thanksgiving Day program. During that busy month of November, the glee club was preparing for its annual Christmas program which was presented on December 20. There was an afternoon performance for the students and an evening performance for the public. The Founder's Day program which was presented on February 18 was climaxed by a performance of the Oriolians, the official title of the glee club. The glee club participated in the annual district music festival which was held at Hopkins in April. The year's activities were brought to a close in the traditional manner by the glee club's singing at the Baccalaureate service. ,ae GLEE CLUB OFFICERS 2nd ROW: I. Moroni, Pres.: B. Kinney, Co-V. Rain or shine, the band marched in beautiful formation during the halt of every football game. On Homecoming Day, the band contributed the appropriate atmosphere for the Coronation ceremonies. STAGE CREW Being a member of the stage crew is one of the most thankless jobs in school: for at any production carried on in the auditorium from the smallest pep fest to the most elaborate stage play. one or all members of the stage crew must be present. This year's stage crew consisted of two sopho- mores, five juniors. and one senior. The crew was ably headed by George Geldert, a junior. IUNIOR CLASS PLAY Znd ROW: F. Hurd, B. Bevensee, B. Flatin, G. Ewert, B. Hosmer, I. Veilleux. lst ROW: C. Milnor, M. Dow, B. Weed. I. Kuntz, G. Grady. SENIOR CLASS PLAY With only four weeks to practice, the senior class produced a play which might be classed as the most difficult play ever to be put on at Park. Death Takes a Holiday, by Cassella. The play was a bit different from most in that it had more dramatic speaking parts interspersed by very dramatic action scenes. The dark. tall. regal-looking Death was portrayed by Pete Georgas with Bev Hamlet playing the part of the beautiful dreamy-eyed girl who falls in love with Death who mas- querades as a Balkan prince. The entire play cast wore evening dress throughout the whole play. The stage setting was an Italian room with a deep garden off the back which was made pol- sible by the use of certain lights and the hard work of the stage crew. Standing: D. Shaffer, D. Iamieson, G. Geldert, M. Knutson, D. Windahl. Seated: D. Hoffman, D. Tourville, B. Olson. IUNIOR CLASS PLAY Mr. Balch directed the Iunior Class Play, Dulcy, by Kaufman and Con- nelly, to great heights from the stand- points of acting and entertainment. lt was also a great financial suc- cess, netting proceeds of 5350, which was used to defray expenses of the annual Iunior - Senior Prom held May 9, at the Automobile Club. ATHLFIFICS WAI.LY ZIMMERMAN 1 Y , . T. PIRSCH All-Conference Tackle S - . if . J' 'af S. TRIDEN Alternate Halfbaclc CLIFF HORN V? COACHES Gerald Krueger led the 1946-47 football team through a successful year. With nine lettermen returning, he wove the Orioles into a team that was hard to beat. He also headed the track team this year. Under his capable leadership, he led his teams to many a victory. Wally Zimmerman also had his hands full of sports this year. He did a very expert job of handling the basketball squad and also of coaching the baseball team which had him iumping from assisting Mr. Grueger with football in the fall to basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring. Leo Rorman is a man who has covered the country, so his social students tell us. This year he did a commendable job of heading the Iunior Varsity football team, and of leading the B Squad basketball team through successful seasons. Clifford Horn ably assisted Mr. Rorman this year in coaching the Iunior Varsity football team. Much credit can be given to him. Peter Zanna is the new Physical Education director this year and with his assistant, Mr. Daly, developed a splendid Phy. Ed. program. Mr. Zanna also helped coach the Iunior Varsity football team. Iohn Steimle, who is also new at Park this year, led the B Squad football team through the season with not too bad a record. GERRY KRUEGER Tom Pirsch was one of the two boys who were picked on the all- conference team this year. Because of his fine play at the position of left guard, he was named all-con, but in the position of left tackle. Tom came to Park from Edina, but he still insists it's Morningside. Tom played second string guard in his junior year, but started in the starting lineup in his senior year. In Tom's case the phrase of brawn and brains do mix. Barton Hedges was the other first stringer on the all-con team. He has played on the first team for the last three years in the position of right tackle which was the position he obtained for all-con. Bart is like Tom in that he came from Edina but lives in Morningside. Homer, as practically everyone calls him, got his nickname from Mr. Zimmerman. Steve Triden was one of two that made the alternate team. Steve, who was discharged from the U. S. Navy, came back to finish his high school education. He was a letterman in his sophomore and junior years, and this year was chosen second string left half. Ioe Rode followed the family tradition this year when he was placed on the all-conference second team in the position of fullback. Little Ioe played good ball both defensively and offensively, and what he lacked in weight he made up for in drive. Ioe started the year as quarterback and later switched to fullback.
