STAGE CREW One of the most valuable group of boys at Park are those who work behind the scenes-our stage crew! Boys, sophomores through seniors, who are interested in giving freely of their time and services to the school and its extra curricular program can become members. This crew works at every program that requires the use of the auditorium. Much of the success of the Christmas play, class plays and Lyceum programs is due to the untiring work of the group. Although it is an unchartered club, they like to consider them- selves as a club, truly a service club in every sense of the word. Fred Thomson's excellent leadership and outstanding work as manager of this crew have made possible some of the finest stage productions ever held at St. Louis Park. Park just can't tell you how much it's going to miss you next year. Here's luck as you go forth building bigger and better stages. 60 STANDING: D. Iamieson, M. Knutson, F. Thomson. Mgr.. S. The story involved the antics of the brainless Mrs. Bennet in an effort to marry off her three young daughters. The youngest girl scandalized the entire family by eloping-the second youngest fell in love with a wealthy neighbor as did the eldest sister. The iunior class play was a big success from both the financial and entertainment point of view. CAST: Louis Domian, P. Gleeson. M. Merchant, L. Garborg, I. Iackson, I. Ienkins. D. Dion, I. Maroni. Music sets the mood. Our St. Louis Park band is the organization that sets the music for our pep fests, Christmas pro- gram, Armistice Day program, class play intermissions, coronation of the Queen on Homecoming Day, and last, it sets the mood tor Graduation Day. This review ot the long list ot their achievements will show that band members have proved an invaluable organization to the school. During the months oi iootball, the band played tor pep tests: and under the capable leadership of our majorettes, it gave us some snappy formations between halves of the games. For weeks previous to Homecoming, we could hear the band playing Pomp and Circumstancef' preparing to set the stage for the Coronation of the Homecoming Queen. Then the basketball season arrived, and again the band was on hand. On March 29, our band participated in the Eighteenth District Spring Instrumental Festival held at Hopkins Iunior High School. BAND 4 ff 5 ALTON OSMAN The schedule of activities included afternoon rehearsals and an evening festival performance. Park entered three quartettes in the ensemble events. A public performance by the combined bands was given in the evening. Our band received an excellent rating at the festival. and can well be proud of their achievement. Once again the band played for a festival, this time it was for the Lake District Vocal contest held at St. Louis Park on April IU. For our more carefree hours we get music from our popular swing band which is an offspring of the band. This group held practices once a week. They first impressed the students during the Arc-n't-You-Glad-You're-You assembly program. The patrons of School Door Canteen are grateful to the Swing Band for its music at Canteen dances. , 2 MADRIGALIANS lst ROW L Garborg I Brown S Rydland S Klodt C Wells 2nd ROW B Fox C Flemmg D Shmn L Berg S Brown S Fagerstrom B Kmney 3rd ROW R Arntsen B Iohnson G DeVere I Hanson B Fruede P Pegors R Valxt I Maron: Madrxgalxans are the select group from the Onolnans They are chosen on thexr abxhty to read musxc at sxght and to blend thexr volces m the group Lxvxng up to their reputatxon the St Louxs Park Madrrgalxans made thelr mrtlal debut at the Dxstnct Music Festxval held at Park on Aprxl 10 Therr selectxons for the contest were Alam aDale Iohn Peel Apnl ls m My Mxstress Face Now Is the Month of Maymg and Welcome Sweet Pleasure The Madrxgalxans also represented Parks muslcal talent at the radio statxons and out lymg P 'I' A s Although long hours of hard work are requxred the group has the satlslactron of contributing their blt to the musxc world And they love xt THE APOLLO CLUB CONTEST The Apollo Club contest which had not been held durmg the war years once agaxn sponsored the vocal scholarshxp contest thxs year Any hugh school student who had sxngmg abxlxty was entitled to compete for the S150 scholarshxp to any accredlted music college xn the country The drstnct contest was held xn the St Louls Park audrtonum ln addxtxon to St Louis Park Hopkms and Southwest made up the dxstnct The mne contestants from Park were Barbara Kmney Bob Valxt Carolann Wells Dick Shmn Gerry DeVere Marrlyn Hollmbeck and Gale DeVere The wmners were Iohn Han son and Manlyn Gllhert Iohn sang La Donna e Momxle from Verdrs Rxgoletto Marllyn sang Habanera from Carmen by Bxzet Iohn wmnmg the dxstnct contest entered the fmals held at West Hrgh School He competed agamst representatxves from ten schools MARILYN GILBERT IOHN HANSEN 66 A, in 1' COACHES FOOTBALL Coach Wally Zxmmerman opened the 1945 football season wlth exght returning lettermen and a wealth of matenal graduated from the last years B squad Stlll green and unseasoned the Parkers traveled to St Cloud Cathedral and met one of the strongest squads of the Catholtc League After dowmng Cathedral 18 U the Parkers looked ready for the Lake Conference Openmg the conference at Umverslty Hxgh Iohn Hansen led the team over an out classed U hrgh Park next took on another expedxtron xnto the Catholxc League toppxng De LaSalle 210 The Orxoles entered the Lake Conference ln earnest but almost met therr Waterloo at the hands of a scrappy Wayzata crew score 12 7 for the Parkers St Louxs Park traveled to Mound and rn a repeat performance topped the Mohawks 14 12 In the zemth of the Lake Conference Park met Hopluns After a 48 mmute battle the score stood 0 U The game was hlghlzghted by two breakaways Don McKays pass mter ceptxon an the second quarter for fxfty hve yards and Ralph Mullens scamper off tackle almost for another score but the frnal decxsxon 0 0 Park then advanced toward a formxdable Robbrnsdale squad and came through wxth a 13 0 vxctory St Lours Parks gndders showed the true power of the 1945 squad as they rolled up a 28 0 wm over Excelslor at Parks homecomxng ln tnbute to Park s frne season four players were placed on the All Conference squad Don McKay fullback Dave Iorvxg guard Dick Mxles center and Iohnny Hansen alternate left half ALL CONFERENCE Nm Qu ua Q9 lf' Fullback Center Guard Alternate Halfback 68 iq 2:2 A y i f ,Mx :IV H , Gif 1 4-if K tl , gg . Those who turn out to participate in the games find a stimulating and wholesome pleasure awaiting them. Bowling, skating. and biking are favorite sports year in and year out. As each season approaches, the girls tum out for their favorite sports. This year basketball was the favorite. As the final whistle blew in the tournament, the sopho- mores were the winners ovcr the seniors in a lively game. Badminton proved almost as popular as basketball, and the girls really turned out. The weather ruled out soccer this year, but toboganning. skating, and other winter sports took its place. Many girls spent hours on skating ponds or ski jumps. Biking and hiking came into their own in spring and fall. These sports were especially enjoyable when climaxed by a picnic. Girls also went on hostel trips during their vacations. The trampoline always got a stiff workout whenever the gymnasium was open. Tumbling was another exercise favored by a few limber girls. Another form of activity was added to the physical education classes this year. Boys' and girls' physical education classes combined to learn all the new dances. as well as the square dancing. the schottishing, and the polka. -4 0?
