by ROBERT LEES Editor-in-Chief MARIAN GIBBONS Assistant Editor RICHARD MUELLER Business Manaser EVALYN LUNDQUIST Adviser p Someday, years from now perhaps, you will shake the dust from this book and with a little sigh and a smile, leaf throush the pa3es of the years to the time when you were just part of a sang of kids in high school. You will see your progress during four happy years vividly portrayed — each picture recalling an old friend — each word an incident. If this yearbook can afford you enjoyment now and in years to come, the purpose in publishing it has been accomplished. JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL r.i SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL LINCOLN SCHOOL BACK ROW: Wm. Martin. We've had our good times along with a few rough jolts. Being a freshman was pretty soft. We kept up a sort of boss rule in the junior high. Then along came the sophomore year, and we were at the very foot of the ladder again. Doesn't it make you fairly creak with age to glance back through former Echowans and compare our young, characterless, rather pretty faces of that year to our more mature features now? (Not that we're stamped with senility — yet.) Electing officers was in the form of a family conclave. We all sat around the recreation room in the Lincoln building, and in a half-hearted attempt at parliamentary procedure noisily nominated our favorites. Then there was the election — merely scribbling out our choices on scratch paper and hastily gathering them up. Some swift counting and calculating followed while we stood around uneasily. The winners were applauded enthusiastically in spite of a few crushed hopes and blighted ambitions. A new student. Philip Scherwin. caught our fancy and was overwhelmingly elected president. He stood inconspicuously in a corner smiling shyly and red to his hairline. Philip left school a few months later, and Bob Lees succeeded him. Alan Justad took life easy as secretary and Jimmy Smith shouldered the wearing job of collecting dues as treasurer. For the most part the girls bravely carried on their dancing without the benefit of male partners, but by our junior year the boys were fairly well trained. The junior year was different in more ways than one. We had a brand new school, a novel, public address system, and an exceptionally beautiful auditorium. But something of the grace and mellowness of that funny old Lincoln building with its sagging steps and familiar creaks was gone. The junior year was a transition period from the old to the new — new members bringing in outside influences in ideas and viewpoints. Our officers were elected less informally and with more thought. A nominating committee chose candidates and campaigning followed. Vernon Olson copped the presidential-title. Mitzi Rogers the vice-presidential chair; the secretarial position was taken over by Bill Lindquist, and Jimmy Smith Old Faithful' resumed his former duties as treasurer. The one blot on that year was the death of one of our most outstanding students. Mildred Kuhnley. We can claim the first basketball championship in Park history. Many new students added to our prestige by their musical talent. The coveted post of senior class president was filled by Wayne Brock, with Bill Lindquist as vice-president. Barbara Jerome as secretary and Bob Lees, treasurer. The seniors hope that those students who remain will keep up the spirit and progressiveness of this year's class. TOP ROW: 0. D-iggan. E. CABLE is head of the athletic department in the school and is in charge of the football, basketball and baseball squads. He certainly deserves every word of praise he has received on producing a championship basketball team. MR. MILLER has been a capable assistant to Mr. Cable in football and his coaching in football end basketball in the Junior High has laid an excellent foundation for our future teams. The entire school, as well as the boys he works with, appreciate the fine work he has done. TOP ROW: J. W.they, W. Schapcr. L. HarH. J. Xngve, 8. Engell, P. Gustafson, C. Softn-son, R. Rognat. W. W. lindtkog, Coach Cable. • This year the Orioles, though playing hard, well-fought games as a rule, lacked that additional drive which makes for championship teams. Mr. Cable and Mr. Miller did excellent coaching and have high hopes for our future teams. The season began with a bang by a victory over Mound 25-0. The team showed mid-season form on both offense and defense. The next game was a non-conference with Anoka. It was lost to us by a penalty to the three yard line in the last few minutes of play through which Anoka plunged for a touchdown. The game with Wayzata ended in a 6-6 deadlock with no spectacular plays or especially good form displayed by either team. Hopkins, our traditional rival, was beaten for the first time in ten years. Defense ball was played mainly in the first two periods, but both teams came back with a terrific attack in the last half to end the game with a 13-7 Park victory. To celebrate the overthrow of Hopkins. Mr. C. E. Christy treated the boys to a banquet. Over confidence lost us our next game. Though the odds were against Excelsior. they surprisingly crashed through to an upset score of I 3-6. All championship hopes were buried after this game. Then U. High gave the boys a drubbing —the final score standing at 27-0. and the last game was taken by Robbinsdale 13-0 — but only after a hard, well-fought battle. They won their first basketball championship. The team started the season with two straight defeats but came back after Christmas vacation and won eleven straight ball games. Their first victory came at the hands of Wadena, a strong range' team. Then the boys won ten conference games before losing to Excelsior in the last second of play. This streak gave the boys the well-earned championship. The best game of the year was played at Excelsior where the boys came off the floor with a 41 to 32 victory. The next week they played Hopkins on their own floor and gave them a beating to the tune of 33 to 29. They gained the top of the conference in this game and went on to win the Lake District Crown after many hard fought games. The boys won their first sub-district tournament game by whipping Wayzata 36 to 14. They dropped their next game to Chaska by the heart breaking score of 37 to 36. All of the regulars graduate in June leaving the substitutes to carry on for next year. HI D. Duggan. R. Eckert, E. Whippi, W. Brock. R. Hagen, F. Crofoot. E. Hattingt, R. Lambert, H. Freiborg, H. The future looks very bright for the team. Earl Hastings and Francis Crofoot. both state champions, return next year. Crofoot has won the state championship in his weight for the past two years. The team placed third in the recent tournament. Both matches with Wayzata were won; one of the two matches with Mound was won. U. High lost their match to our grapplers. Among the defeats Robbinsdaie beat us twice and Edison once. We placed second in the district tournament. • • The fastest game on earth was introduced to St. Louis Park High School this year. They played four games and lost them all. Most of the games were hard fought and against more experienced teams. This year the team suffered from lack of equipment and experience. Next year Mr. Carlson, the coach, hopes to have more equipment as well as the return of several experienced players. 2nd ROW: 0. Byers. E. Woodfill. 0. Chapel, B. Lindquist, 0. Hoglund. 1st ROW: J.
