Thus cherishing them, we could more cer- tainly guarantee that wiiat has happened to that great land will never happen to this one, a nation still ' under God. ' They do not seem to live . . .they have no freedoms to choose jobs, schools, curricula, homes, color, food, clothes, etc. , but are made to enjoy the things chosen for them . , . Com- petition and desire of ownership are bled from the Russians at an early age.

II From March 28 to April 18 our prin- cipal, Msgr, Robert Angelle, toured Hungary, Yugoslavia, and Russia to examine the educational systems and culture behind tlie Iron Curtain with other members of the National As- sociation of Secondary School Prin- cipals. The following several pages record his memories and comments about his once-in-a-lifetime experi- ences; although these memories are unclear, pictures and in- adequately brief excerpts, perhaps a feeling of another life can be felt by looking into the eyes of its in- habitants through the eyes of its observer. The average Hungarian is not aware of Communism in his life- -it is much less in evidence there than in Russia. There is a greater abundance of consumer goods, food, ci eature comforts, automobiles, pri- vate ownership, and even joie de vivre. f

J m mr ' ' 137 As a Churchman, one is immediately depressed by the irony of so many visible signs of Religion, but no Faith, much less practice of Religion amongst all this Religious past and sacred His- tory. From the beginning of our ten day visit in Russia, I told our guide, Valja, that I was a Catholic priest. Not with words, but in demeanor, then and throughout our stay, her reaction to this could be summed up as being, It ' s too bad that an intelligent man needs such a crutch. '
