i. I : i tf  Spectre Saint Louis High School Lake Charles, Louisiana Volume III The human face is the masterpiece of God, The eyes reveal tlie soul, the mouth the flesh, the skm stands for purpose, the nose means will; but over and behind all Is that fleeting something we call expression . This yearbook has attempted to show you the faces of those whom we often forget. They are always tliere but are usually taken for granted. Therefore, we dedicate this yearbook to the silent majority. We will no longer cease to I ' emember their faces, for they are now firmly imprinted in our memories. SCIENCE |! It is the common wonder of all men, how among so many millions of faces tliere should be none alike. His face, the tablet of unutter able thoughts. ■. VilQBSII ' t A man shall see faces, that If you examine them part by part you shall find never a good; and yet all together do well. 1 i!i9mK99IMV MMiiMTSiS Jtudent Ac Sports Organizations Underclassmen Seniors ' ds I As you page through this beautiful edition of Spectre, we hope that it ' s like a visit to St. Louis High School. We hope that some of the meaning of St. Louis is discernible in the pictures, words, etc. At St. Louis, we believe that everyone has a destiny intended by God, and that we must help each other discover his own. At St. Louis, we believe that each of us counts for something -- that the world must be a better place because we have been in it. Hell, even on earth, is to face old age realizing that the world would have been better if you had not lived. A St. Louis graduate has really been infected by the intended Spirit of St. Louis if at the end of liis her life that graduate will be able to say: Because I went to St. Louis High School, I was not only a good housewife, artist, lawyer, carpenter, doctor, nurse, plumber, police- man, etc. , but what ' s more important 1 was a person who knew how to live, to recreate, to love, to give, to share --a person who knew how to live with myself, with God, with others. Yes, we believe we have it together here, be- cause we know Jesus lives-- and in Communion with Him there can be no discord and dissension that is lasting. MSGR. ROBERT G. The purpose of the pro- gram was to expand the curriculum offered at St. Louis and was opened to seniors with a 3. 5 grade average during their time in high school, and a recommendation from the principal. Students taking part in this program were eligible to receive a St. Louis High School diploma after completing 24 semester hours. They were considered college students and could not participate in co-curricular activities. 1 Michael Johnson ill, Barbara Hart Harvest Festival Was Another Financial Success. - mm :$l ■- - ' : ' - 49 Tacky Day ' 73 Tacky Day was really successful this year; there were so many different ideas! The day started with the elections of tackiest girl and or boy in the home- rooms. After a brief 25 minute stint in each of our classes, we assembled in the Student Union for some skits put on by different students. Before deciding on best-dressed, Carl Broussard, a junior, gave an impromtu performance. He got a standing ovation that he really deserved! Tacky elections were held with winners Julie Malus (a white rabbit) and Francis Schwartzenburg (a German mafioso). After school more fun developed at the Powder Puff football game. The Seniors Freshmen team beat the sophomores and juniors 12-0. Sports Someone once said that tying a foot- ball game is like kissing your sister. We certainly had enough of that. The decisive manner in which we defeated Kinder after the championship was no longer in sight indicated the team had what it takes to be a winner. -COACH MILES GOSNELL STANDING- Coaches Tom Couste, C.J. SPECTRE ' 73 tried to focus on the faces of the silent majority --the typical St. Louis students who received little attention or recognition during the year, the ones rarely seen in yearbooks who actually set the pace and establish the spirit of the school. This year SPECTRE, an image from the past, ' was produced by a very small, dedicated staff during journalism class. Long after you left school for summer vacation this staff was still selecting photographs, writing copy, and editing its inevit- able errors. The seniors and a team of facult) members followed schedules made each week that were independent of tlie rest of the school ' s classroom schedules. This was done in order to discover the advantages of being able to lengthen or shorten a class period according to tlie needs of the class. During the year, the seniors enjoyed off-campus P. E. activities, (skating and bowling) and elected mini-courses (short term, non-credit, Informally -instructed courses) offered by St. Louis teachers having special interests, (wine -ferment- ing, yoga, household finance, cooking for boys, household improvement for girls). Classes and assemblies were held daily along with athletic activities. Mary Brisco Mike Choi Ellen Brendler Cathy Bodin 134 William Minaldi Look Out, Russia! II From March 28 to April 18 our prin- cipal, Msgr, Robert Angelle, toured Hungary, Yugoslavia, and Russia to examine the educational systems and culture behind tlie Iron Curtain with other members of the National As- sociation of Secondary School Prin- cipals. The following several pages record his memories and comments about his once-in-a-lifetime experi- ences; although these memories are unclear, pictures and in- adequately brief excerpts, perhaps a feeling of another life can be felt by looking into the eyes of its in- habitants through the eyes of its observer. The average Hungarian is not aware of Communism in his life- -it is much less in evidence there than in Russia. There is a greater abundance of consumer goods, food, ci eature comforts, automobiles, pri- vate ownership, and even joie de vivre. f Every American disenchanted with his country should visit Russia! We all need to cherish our land, our schools, friends, families, rights, and freedoms, es- pecially freedom of religion. Thus cherishing them, we could more cer- tainly guarantee that wiiat has happened to that great land will never happen to this one, a nation still ' under God. ' They do not seem to live . . .they have no freedoms to choose jobs, schools, curricula, homes, color, food, clothes, etc. , but are made to enjoy the things chosen for them . , . Com- petition and desire of ownership are bled from the Russians at an early age. J m mr ' ' 137 As a Churchman, one is immediately depressed by the irony of so many visible signs of Religion, but no Faith, much less practice of Religion amongst all this Religious past and sacred His- tory. From the beginning of our ten day visit in Russia, I told our guide, Valja, that I was a Catholic priest. Not with words, but in demeanor, then and throughout our stay, her reaction to this could be summed up as being, It ' s too bad that an intelligent man needs such a crutch. ' As we took off for Lon- don on a DC -9, attended by beautiful girls working as stewardesses for the Scandinavian Airlines, we all clapped --no doubt happy to be ' free again. ' After touchdowns in Stock- holm and Copenhagen, we put down in London for R R, to regain our wits prior to another 747 Pan- Am transoceanic flight back to the States.
