The theme of this first volume of Spectre ( an image from the past ) centers around a major school goal: unity from the consolidation of St. Charles Aeadcim and Landr) Memorial High. From cover to cover this book ' s content shows us that to some extent this has been done, and yet much has been left to be done. This has been not so much a beginning year as a year of transition, a fusion ol two into one; we sec the quotient of only one-half and the other ball has yet to be — in time, with growth. Perhaps this statement could be made ol our first graudating Class of ' 71 and of us who remain behind: . . . and the other half has vet to be — in time, with growth. We chose S[ eclre as our title because our work is now a shade from the past, an apparition, a chronicling of past growth. We peer out from this past as things that could have been but were not, as things that were but no longer are, and yet as things that are now and will continue to become. The spectral staff under (he editorial leadership of Dean Gossen dedicates this volume to what St. Louis and its alumni are capable ol becoming. Very few workers remained behind to finish the hook. To Ellen Bren- dler and Theresa Goudeau, we give our thanks. After many hours of concentration, Dean Gossen (our beloved editor) came to a conclusion about yearbook. 52
