SWIMMING The Swim Team went to Detroit to the regionals as they have for the past six years only they didn't come away first this year, lacking the five points necessary for the win. Still, the team won ten of the eighteen events and managed to set records in the process. Many of the swimmers going to Nationals ranked very high in standings in individual and relay events. Mark Arendes ranked eighth in the nation in the 50 yd. freestyle, Dave Barnes fourth in the 100 yd. breaststroke and tenth in the 200 yd., Chuck Dupree placed sixth for the 400 Individual medley, Joe Hawkins ranked fifth and tenth for 100 yd. and 200 yd. backstroke respectively and Howard Sheets tied in the standings for eighth in the 100 yd. butterfly and tenth in the 200 yd. category.

CROSS COUNTRY The 1974 Meramec Cross Country team, without a doubt, proved to be the best in the school's history. Meramec posted its second consecutive perfect dual- meet season with victories over Lincoln Land Q23-3611, Longview Q15-501, Danville Q15-505, Greenville Q15-441, and highly regarded Westminister Q22-33l. One of their season goals was to win the Region 16 Championship, which they did for the third consecutive year. The team scores were: Meramec 20, Forissant Valley 43, and Longview 67. Ron Stetina set a new course record of 27:40 in his second regional cham- pionship win, leading MCC to the top four positions. Following Ron was Jack Lindsey 28:11, Denis Baumstark 28:45 and Glen Bartholomew 29:11. The top seven runners then flew to Eugene, Oregon in the National Junior College Cross Country Cham- pionships on November 9th. We were rewarded with an excellent 5th place finish with two runners, Ron Stetina 4th and Jack Lindsey 10th, receiving All-American honors. They were followed by Denis Baumstark 58th, Glen Bartholomew 62nd, Gary Ryan 115th, Ron Ander- son 144th and Mike Rafferty 165th. Next year's team will surely miss Ron Stetina, Jack Lindsey, Gary Ryan and Ron Anderson: but with Denis Baumstark, Glen Bartholomew, Mike Rafferty and Mark Randolph returning for the 1975 season, the team will be looking to improve on its 5th place finish when it travels to Rochester, Minnesota.
