REGIS THA TION One of the first things a new college student learns about is-registration. ln fact everybody goes through it year after year after year after year . . . and it never seems to get any better. Picking classes was never like this in high school. You talked to your counselor, found out what classes you needed, and you took them. But here you have to fight for a class! There isn't any class that you should need so badly to have to fight for it! There are numbers they give you and numbers you have to remember and lines to wait in and classes that filli up just as you get to the front of the line. You have to go to all the proper stations and in the right order or you'Il waste more time going through the line again. You might see some friends but you don't really have the time to talk to them. All you really want to do is get your classes and go. Just when you think this is an in-. itiation to see if you really want to attend college and you f can't stand it any longer, you come to the end. You'rea free. You've gotten the classes you wanted for something .4 close anywayl and you're done. But for all the trouble, itl seems you should get credits just for getting through registration. After this any class looks like a breeze! 7 , Q4 I 'W 13 V2 it f--. 'YM Y' f ww , fm 'r ' .1 A 0, nm X lov uf J 3 Q W , 13 I X W x W may X if -s f S. 45? 1, ma Ng nw Y,-x 'A I ,A , uf: Q if iam. One is a large ad for Wendy and Dave 5 Place . a neighborhood tavernfcafe. Another is a cor , demnation by the health department, printed by the St dem Activities sign shop. Another is a piece of a son lyric, and stuck on the door, hidden under notes that rea Hi Everybody, Love Muggs are two very inauspiciou signs that read YEARBOOK and NEWSPAPER . Thi is college publications and people is what it's all abou' Yearbook Editor Wendy Carter and THE MONTAG Editor Dave Schmitt are in charge here. They run the oi fice and the office runs them - all over campus! Wend is trying to find Robert Abbott fwho is probably out goof ing off with Theresa Schmidtt who was supposed to sho a club photo 20 minutes ago. Wendy wound up taking th shot herself but that's OK. Tom Nord winds up taking th shots Wendy misses and Gig Taylor shoots anything els that doesn't move fand some good shots of things th' dot. ln between photo assignments, Wendy tries to enlis aid from anyone who has time to help with page layout and photo selection. And all the time, Editor Dave i, borrowing any shots not used in the yearbook for thi paper. But that's not all. i Along with assigning photos from the previousl1 mentioned folks, he also assigns stories to anyone whil can print his name twice in a row, and tries to find peoplsi who will help on his layout. People like John Hilgert wh is in the office usually long enough to know when th work will start and when he should leave. Or Franl Gurskis who can write some good copy when his hand aren't full of food or his mouth full of jokes, both good ani bad. Claire Kuchner is the epitome of energy and i: always helpful. Chris Rauch is there too. Chris is, along with a few others, a holdover from last year's staff and si she's already accustomed to the frantic office pace am knows how to meet its demands. fAfter all, if she couldni stand the strain, would she have gone on to Journalisn school at Columbia in the spring where the going is ever rougher'?J And it never failsg right in the middle of a tricky layout, Vadus Brown will come in to expound on his lates-3 theory, disrupting Todd Moehlmann and Conniii Schwartz as they write headlines. Norma Tynes sits wrestling vocally with some copy until Pat Mulligan cracks a joke to ease the tension. Mike Higgins sits at the typewriter, churning out copy at the la minute to fill space. Sue Pike and Chris Shields proofread copy while Tom Christie sticks his head ir briefly, between classes, to say Hi , and check on all idea for his next piece. And Marianne Colter runs foi soda, types odd copy, answers the phone and smiles as lot. She is the author of those Hi Everybody notes or the door and is in charge of moral support for the office, She does a good job. The Yearbook and THE MONTAGE are separat functions but this year they shared a common staff and in retrospect, it seems only right. With all the fun the peo , ple shared, like hay rides. trips to the Granary, and theli Valentine's Day party, it's only fair that they should shar the work. For all the borrowed photos Dave needed Wendy got even by using many MONTAGE staffers tc write Yearbook copy as her deadline drew near fano' sometimes passedt. Throughout all, the faculty advisors worked asi overseers on the projects born in the room. Sometimes it was hard to think of Rich Michalski as anything but an older kid as he worked land playedt with the MONTAGEJ staff. And the same goes for Delancey Butch Smith whe looked like anything but a teacher or yearbook advisor ir his beard and faded jeans. The work couldn't have been completed if it hadn't' been for the rest of the cast of thousands who passe? through the office. People like Forest Hampton. Stev Crowder. Sandy Sepulveda. Kathy Gutzler, Walt Totterer,i Terry Martin, Judy Meadows, Henry Manning, Wally Rutherford, Bill Mellis, and Keith Glenn who helped put it all together. Beyond that are all the friends of the staff andi friends of friends, people who stopped to say Hi , folksi who shared in and created a sense of community in thei publications office. That shared interest and friendshipi was the thing that made the office what it was. Andi though at times it hampered things, it was, in the end, the! things that finally got the job done. Friends workingi together. Here's hoping next year's editors have as goodi a staff as this year's did. . -'Eli A if il L 'V' I A iii' 6 CQ 1 'Z IH. 'f' 1 , . Many thanks and congratulations to Coach Jack Mimlitz and his entire team for an exciting season. 35105 NF.:-rf 3 ,- -ew- REEN .,, I X YI 1:-.4 ,mx 5 ..... 914 '-'- ,.',' V E5 3-.gf-. my m5'.5'q:fa.4,..g4ff' 74. 4-pi' 'i I 4 u .P i J f' 3 k' t, vi .... , ff ','4 7 , 7 As WJ.: K ' V -V .SN f L41 f 1- ,f ef ' -, Y , ' r 3, s --' - .-. if y 'V 5 ff ft: 7 Y ' is. 1, ,Lib H 'jg Tig A , 4, w V 'X 5 .5 ' ' tl KZ, '+y ,, A -ff' 1.9 A ...uL. ai I NU NMUNIN41 ,, x -'H lf lk' AS 929.1 WLMUL it W' E 40 ,,,,. ... ,M .4 ,QM W 'S y AN 1 I 'S gm X Q I wrvjliv ,L - ., , G u- X it X194 Qf' to right: Coach Jack Mimlitz, Ron Percy, Gary Post, Scott Boyd, Pau' Lewandowski, Gary Wideman. Theoretically the mat-men should have had a 10-5-0 record since 3 games were lost by only 1 or 2 points and the forfeit of a weight class is 6 points to the opposing team. Mike Slyman was the only wrestler to go to nationals this year. He held the season with a 22-1-1 record, was the Region 16 118 lb. champion, and the outstanding wrestler at the Iowa Inter-regionals. Still, the team won ten of the eighteen events and managed to set records in the process. Many of the swimmers going to Nationals ranked very high in standings in individual and relay events. Mark Arendes ranked eighth in the nation in the 50 yd. freestyle, Dave Barnes fourth in the 100 yd. breaststroke and tenth in the 200 yd., Chuck Dupree placed sixth for the 400 Individual medley, Joe Hawkins ranked fifth and tenth for 100 yd. and 200 yd. backstroke respectively and Howard Sheets tied in the standings for eighth in the 100 yd. butterfly and tenth in the 200 yd. category. Q 61 CROSS COUNTRY The 1974 Meramec Cross Country team, without a doubt, proved to be the best in the school's history. Meramec posted its second consecutive perfect dual- meet season with victories over Lincoln Land Q23-3611, Longview Q15-501, Danville Q15-505, Greenville Q15-441, and highly regarded Westminister Q22-33l. One of their season goals was to win the Region 16 Championship, which they did for the third consecutive year. The team scores were: Meramec 20, Forissant Valley 43, and Longview 67. Ron Stetina set a new course record of 27:40 in his second regional cham- pionship win, leading MCC to the top four positions. Following Ron was Jack Lindsey 28:11, Denis Baumstark 28:45 and Glen Bartholomew 29:11. The top seven runners then flew to Eugene, Oregon in the National Junior College Cross Country Cham- pionships on November 9th. We were rewarded with an excellent 5th place finish with two runners, Ron Stetina 4th and Jack Lindsey 10th, receiving All-American honors. They were followed by Denis Baumstark 58th, Glen Bartholomew 62nd, Gary Ryan 115th, Ron Ander- son 144th and Mike Rafferty 165th. Next year's team will surely miss Ron Stetina, Jack Lindsey, Gary Ryan and Ron Anderson: but with Denis Baumstark, Glen Bartholomew, Mike Rafferty and Mark Randolph returning for the 1975 season, the team will be looking to improve on its 5th place finish when it travels to Rochester, Minnesota. If only every student at every collei could be afforded this opportunity . . . A year passes so quickly. . .and as always there are many things I would have liked to do but didn't have ll time . . . and there were people met once and not seen again, or people talked to that would or could ha become friends . . . l'd like to give special thanks to Robert Abbott and Tom Nord who worked the whole year and never seemi to mind the endless hours in the dark room, and to David Schmitt who was always there to help when no one ey was, and to DeLancey Smith without whom this would never have been possible. Smile. l A word to next year's editor-l hope you have such fine photographers and as great a group of people share an office with as I did this year-also, be sure to get started earlier than you think you should-the deadlines are monsters.
