Thayer, an individual who has touched deeply the lives of all who have known him. Dr. Thayer has the distinction of being one of only a few Deans of a College of Pharmacy who is not a pharmacy graduate, but he continually displays his sincere interest in our profession through his dedication to the discipline and training of the pharmacists of tomorrow. He is a member of those organizations which con- sistently strive to elevate the professional standards of Pharmacy, the American Pharmaceutical Association, and Missouri Pharmaceutical Association.. A chemist by profession, Dean Thayer was born in Medina, Ohio. He corn- pleted his undergraduate work at Ohio State University, then pursued graduate studies at Wisconsin University, where he received his Ph.D. degree in 1928. Later in 1928 he was employed by Parke, Davis and Company as a research chemist and in 1929 he served on the faculty of the California College of Pharmacy. Since 1930, Dr. Thayer has been with the St. Louis College of Pharmacy and in 1958 he was appointed as Dean of the college. He is regarded as an outstanding professor in the classroom, but his warm personality radiates far beyond his teach- ing ability. He is a true friend of every student, and willingly contributes his time to many student organzations in the college. He is a member of Rho Chi Honor Society, and served as Grand Regent of Kappa Psi Fraternity from 1960 to 1962. It would be impossible to adequately describe the numerous accomplishments of this great man , but we who know and love him, realize the full extent of his achievements. The Student Body of the College of Pharmacy very humbly dedicates the 1962 Prescripto to you, Dr. James R. Thayer, and we wish you to know that we are proud and grateful to share a relationship with you as you serve us as teacher, Dean, and everlasting friend. 2 JE. .Y-1.1274 M3511 Riagg. Since the organization was given national recognition, it has grown to include 59 active chapters. Membership in Rho Chi, which is by election, is limited to those who have attained a high scholastic proficiency. The Beta Kappa Chapter of Rho Chi endeavors to promote schol- arship in the freshman class through an award given to the student for the highest scholastic average in his class. To qualify for Rho Chi, five semesters of work must be completed. During this period a BH average, or being in the upper twenty percent of the class must be attained. Students not accepted after five semesters may become eligible in following semesters, providing they meet the same qualifications. 52 nzfe1j9fa1fe1fnz'1Qf ouncil Row I: Diane Rhein, Mary Alice Hofen, Dr. Robert Schleif, Roehrs, Jack Miller, jack -Ialowiec, Richard Waghalter, Lew Phyllis McGlasson, Betty Sue Clasen. Membership in the council is composed of representatives elected from each fraternal group, by that group, and each organization has an equal vote in the council. The officers of the council are elected from the members of the council, and the office of president is rotated among member organizations. The I.F.C. attempts to maintain a high plane of fraternal life and interfraternal relation- ships, to cooperate with the college administration in their efforts to maintain high social and academic standards at the college, to conduct discussions of the questions of interest to the college and the fraternity world, and to compile rules for regulating fraternities on campus. 53 Kg appa Psi Row 1: Donald Wager, Wendell Hooks, james Shirey, Salim Tadrus, Marion Kurz, Roy Klosterman, Ronald Baur, William Galluzzo, Daniel Mulcahyhlohn Vono, Stauton jurgens, Larry Karch, Leonard Naeger, Harry Richter, Gary Ruedin. Harvey Smith at Russell Mili- tary Academy in New Haven, Conn. on May 30, 1879. It was established as a combined medical and pharmacy fraternity. In 1924 Kappa Psi became solely a Pharmacy Fraternity while the medical counterpart became Theta Kappa Psi. There were at that time twenty- four collegiate chapters. Through the proper guidance and cooperation of the chapters, Kappa Psi grew. Kappa Psi was first to become a member of the Professional Interfraternity Conference in 1928. As Kappa Psi grew over the years, it became known as a fraternity of high ideals, and an abundant supply of leadership. New chapters throughout the United States were joining the ranks of these leaders. News of this great fraternity was heard by the students and faculty of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. On March 19, 1946, Gamma Pi Chapter was chartered at this college. After fifteen years of continued success at the college, Gamma Pi Chapter was proud to have their own Dean james R. Thayer as Grand Regent of Kappa Psi 'National Pharmaceutical Fraternity. Gamma Pi Chapter wishes to thank those brothers of Kappa Psi who have aided this chapter in its progress through the years. hi elta Chi Row 1: Thomas Carpenter, James Visconti, Robert Roehrs, Dr. J. A reactivation of the Rho Chapter began in February, 1949. Fourteen fraters were initiated by members of the Supreme Chapter. The Rho Chapter again stepped forth to help advance the profession of pharmacy, to help his fellow fraters and to take part in community and school affairs. Rho Chapter is truly following and spreading the aims and ideals of Peace, Friendship, and Brotherly Love. Rho Chapter's activities at the college include the sponsoring of the PRESCRIPTION DANCE which provides funds for the Morris Cold Loan Fund. In 1916 the name was changed to Lambda Kappa Sigma and during the next year the local society took steps to nationalize the sorority, becoming Alpha Chapter, upon the orga- nization of several chapters in other schools. The council of Alpha Chapter conducted the affairs of the sorority from 1917 until May, 1922 when a graduate Grand Council was organized. In September, 1948, a group of women formed a Card and Cake Club at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy and Allied Sciences in St. Louis, Missouri. Three years later they applied for recognition as a chapter of Lambda Kappa Sigma, and were formally installed on May 13, 1951, by the Second Vice-President, Mrs. Betty Susina. Since 1951, the Alpha Zeta Chapter has been growing proportionally as the number of women enrolled in the college increases. Each year the St. Louis College of Pharmacy sees more and more women pursuing the study of pharmacy, hence the Alpha Zeta Chapter anticipates unlimited progress in the future years.
