TRACK The start of the Frosh A.A.P.S. Cross Country championship run. Cross country team returning with coaches L. Bonelli and Brother Conrad after competing in the A.A.P.S. Champs. TRACK St. Leonard's entered its first cross country season by running at Van Courtlandt Park and coming in the first hundred group amongst a few hundred competitors. The freshmen also com- peted in their division and did as well as could be. The tracksters entered the first indoor meet with a third place medal in the Junior 880 yard relay. The team consisted of : Charles Devlin, Ed Villa- fane, Leroy Greene and Clarence Cuddy. This was followed up with a second in the Mount St. Michael meet and finally the record-setting 6 lay relay at Queens-Iona, which was the grand victory of the victorious Junior team, time, 1 :53.5. The sub-midget team consisted of Chieffo, Benin- ati, Mulligan, and Benvengo. Throughout the in- door season, there were few meets for this group, but when they competed, they performed well. Scoring in such mets as the Sectional Champion- ships, the Frosh-Novice meet, they gave a good indication of their potential for the outdoor season. At Madison Square Garden during the C.H.S.A.A. indoor championships these sub-midgets were split in order to attain more points. OPEN DIVISION Not much competing went on in the open divi- sion but when St. Leonard's was entered it was something worthwhile to see. The foursome of Charles Devlin, Ed Villafane, Clarence Cuddy, and Al Williams competed in the Open 440 yard relay at the Queens-Iona relays. They were acclaimed by a daily newspaper for being the only Catholic High School in the final of this Championship race, thus setting a new Catholic High Schol record of 45 seconds flat. SHOT PUT Opening the indoor season, H. Herbert was St. Leonard's entry in the 12 lb. shot put. Since com- petition during indoor season is scarce, Herbert saw little action. The lack of facilities limited both of our throwers in practice and performance but outdoors will give opportunity for them to pre- pare themselves for stiff competition. Both these throwers, H. Herbert and C. Cuddy, show great promise and bear some watching in the years to come. HURDLES Stiff competition came to M. Albano and J. Fabry as they ran in the 60 yard High Hurdles. The latter setting a Novice hurdle record of 0:09 seconds fiat, and a school record of 0 :08.4 seconds. Being novices to this event, losing was almost habitual. Finally J. Fabry won the Novice 60 yard High Hurdles with a record time of 0:09 seconds and a school record besides. Mr. Bonelli has high hopes that his hurdlers will perform to his expectations this outdoor season. MADISON SQUARE GARDEN The indoor season came to a closing with the C.H.S.A.A. Championships held at Madison Square Garden. S. Cheffo, competitor in the sub-midget 50 yard dash, placed 4th in the finals of this rage. Ed Villafane competed in the Junior 50 yard dash and placed third, thus getting bronze medal. Charles Devlin competed in the 280 yard dash and had a final placing of third, thus, winning a third place medal.
