You have been fortu- nate in securing a Catholic Business Education in order to equip you to earn a place in the World of Commerce. You have been further enhanced by a sound Catholic Moral Training that will help you face the many responsibilities and tasks that arise during the course of ones life. Further, you are en- riched in that you have graduated from a school conducted by the Franciscan Brothers, who have dedicated their lives to your service. You have, in a word, achieved your goal. You are graduating from High School. This is but a begin- ning on the road to eternity. A high school education is only a preparation for future and further study on the higher rung of the education ladder. Many have made a decision to continue their education and have done so wisely. For others, it will be delayed because they must begin a business career. But, whichever road you have chosen, never forget the duty and obligation owed by you to your school. You must ever be the torch bearer for your Alma Mater. Al- ways be proud of your High School and the members of the Faculty who have been instrumental in guid- ing you in the early years of your formation. Because you bear the mark of a Catholic, you are expected to live up to the obligations placed upon your shoulders and never be found wanting in de- fending your faith. Your way in life has been clearly pointed out during the time spent with us. You may never plead ingnorance of your Religion as an excuse for failing Almighty God. Further, you have been given a sound business education. Your Willingness to perform the duties and tasks assigned will be a test of your ability and will further testify to the competence and efficiency of the training you have received. Finally, you must never forget the sacrifices made by your parents to see that you received a Catholic Education. They have deprived themselves of many necessities in life in order that they might see you achieve a high school education. You are but beginning. You are on the road and have received the proper directions. See that you do not detour from your stated goal and you will find eternal happiness at the end of the highway of life. 4 1 i ' -5 5 , O Reverend Chaplain at the Friary 2 J .Kb ,N K' 1 , A if W' X 'H- ' 2 . f 3 , N, 1 ' Q QF 1 3 ,S ie Benedlchon at the Fnary following Cl Day of Reco Reverend Confessor for the Students Mr Thomas McGwynn Reglstrar ,pw Cf' fwyxi VZ! mm. This book is put together in the hope that in the years to come the alumnus will open his yearbook and reminisce with pleasure. Leonardian staffs have come and gone, and through their cumulative efforts thou- sands of copies of the book have found their way around the world. A bigger and a better Leonardian has been the constant goal and although each succeeding book has reflected the individuality of its staff and the person- ality of the times, one thread links them together . . . the spirit of giving the gradu- ate the best possible record of his 4 years at St. Leonard's. We do hope that you the graduates, will forever cherish the memories which are herein recorded. mf?-'fr 'f ' ' ff X Ku. Brother Pius, 0.S.F. NI I TAFF '. Guidance Department For the better life adjustment of each Leonardian, St. Leonard's High School has established a Guidance Department with a trained Brother-counselor in charge. The new service assists students with their educa- tional, vocational and personal problems. Ori- entation of Freshmen, administering of in- telligence and reading tests have been under- taken. Seniors have been prepared to meet the challenge of college or post-high school training by group guidance and lectures. Every student has access to the Guidance Ofiice where he may borrow reading matter on the problems of youth or obtain an inter- view with the counselor. In addition to the Guidance Director, a priest is available weekly as Spiritual Di- rector to assist with moral and personal diffi- culties and to aid in the development of healthy souls through the confessional. Williams drives in to score 2 points. The Lion cagers, coached by Brother Alfred, O.S.F., had a starting five consisting of Al Wil- liams, Gene Kennish, Julian Fabry, Joe Cannon and Jim Mannix. Their strong bench consisted of Charles Norton, Hank Connelly, Tom Kenny, Ray Hall, Marty McNeil, Bill LeFever, Jim Koltzen and Larry DeGray. Ed Ritter and Hugh McClos- key were the managers. The Lions had to go right down to the wire before taking the title in a special play-off game from Loyola. The final game for the A.A.P.S. Championship started off pretty slowly, with both teams sizing up each other for the first quarterg at the end of which the Lions were ahead only by a few points. But, in the second quarter, the fighting Lions stampeded the Loyola cagers. At half-time, St. Leonard's led by 13 points. In the third quarter it was all St. Leonard's. They swept rebounds from both boards and were fast breaking for the whole period. During the fourth quarter, the Lions kept up the blistering pace, and at one time led by 27 points. The outstanding individual player of the game, and the season, was senior Al Williams. He was high scorer with 25 points, but even more impor- tant, he was the top rebounder. Q, iw: V, f Yi it as FY? Cross Country championship run. Cross country team returning with coaches L. Bonelli and Brother Conrad after competing in the A.A.P.S. Champs. TRACK St. Leonard's entered its first cross country season by running at Van Courtlandt Park and coming in the first hundred group amongst a few hundred competitors. The freshmen also com- peted in their division and did as well as could be. The tracksters entered the first indoor meet with a third place medal in the Junior 880 yard relay. The team consisted of : Charles Devlin, Ed Villa- fane, Leroy Greene and Clarence Cuddy. This was followed up with a second in the Mount St. Michael meet and finally the record-setting 6 lay relay at Queens-Iona, which was the grand victory of the victorious Junior team, time, 1 :53.5. The sub-midget team consisted of Chieffo, Benin- ati, Mulligan, and Benvengo. Throughout the in- door season, there were few meets for this group, but when they competed, they performed well. Scoring in such mets as the Sectional Champion- ships, the Frosh-Novice meet, they gave a good indication of their potential for the outdoor season. At Madison Square Garden during the C.H.S.A.A. indoor championships these sub-midgets were split in order to attain more points. OPEN DIVISION Not much competing went on in the open divi- sion but when St. Leonard's was entered it was something worthwhile to see. The foursome of Charles Devlin, Ed Villafane, Clarence Cuddy, and Al Williams competed in the Open 440 yard relay at the Queens-Iona relays. They were acclaimed by a daily newspaper for being the only Catholic High School in the final of this Championship race, thus setting a new Catholic High Schol record of 45 seconds flat. SHOT PUT Opening the indoor season, H. Herbert was St. Leonard's entry in the 12 lb. shot put. Since com- petition during indoor season is scarce, Herbert saw little action. The lack of facilities limited both of our throwers in practice and performance but outdoors will give opportunity for them to pre- pare themselves for stiff competition. Both these throwers, H. Herbert and C. Cuddy, show great promise and bear some watching in the years to come. HURDLES Stiff competition came to M. Albano and J. Fabry as they ran in the 60 yard High Hurdles. The latter setting a Novice hurdle record of 0:09 seconds fiat, and a school record of 0 :08.4 seconds. Being novices to this event, losing was almost habitual. Finally J. Fabry won the Novice 60 yard High Hurdles with a record time of 0:09 seconds and a school record besides. Mr. Bonelli has high hopes that his hurdlers will perform to his expectations this outdoor season. MADISON SQUARE GARDEN The indoor season came to a closing with the C.H.S.A.A. Championships held at Madison Square Garden. S. Cheffo, competitor in the sub-midget 50 yard dash, placed 4th in the finals of this rage. Ed Villafane competed in the Junior 50 yard dash and placed third, thus getting bronze medal. Charles Devlin competed in the 280 yard dash and had a final placing of third, thus, winning a third place medal.
