F March 4, I98I. Today I lost my friend. Ed Flemming was a friend and a teacher. He was the rock that quite a few people leaned on. Doc would always have time to talk to you. no matter what time of the day or night. To say that he was a great man is an understatement. You might as well say that the Mississippi River is a stream. His value system was unshakeable: he believed what he taught. He loved teaching-it was his life. Doc told the class about three weeks ago that if he were to die while teaching class he would feel that he had led a full life and accomplished everything he had set out to do. Doc loved his students and they loved him. Without Doc, the College will seem a lonely place. I will miss seeing him walk across the campus and wave his hand in greeting and I will miss his big laugh. He never met a stranger and would help you in anyway he could. I have observed him many times just standing and watching a squirrel scurrying about on the ground. This would make him late to class sometimes, but the students would always wait for him. He would explain why he was late and he would say I hope that I am never too busy to observe nature. Doc was the type of man who would be at ease with anyone. from drinking wine and smoking cigarettes with the lowly wino, to having dinner with the President. I can just see him now. up there in heaven telling God that Doc's here now. you can take it easy. I am here to help you now. I would be willing to wager that he is already teaching again. l love you Doc. You were one hell of a Man. if-fr JEFFREY W GARDNER ,... f 1.1 A n ' A .v'.Mvq 'U' X11 - ' ' Q , Devoted to his family and students Oversized heart big enough for everyone fs, ,,.
