Dr Southard Friendship I have been asked to give a definition of friendship, and I believe that this is an impos- sible task for any one man to do. We have only to look at the stacks of books that deal with friendship, and we can see that it varies greatly from individual to individual. Friendship is not only an experience of doing things together, but it is also an emo- tional relationship between two individuals. It is not something that happens over night, but it grows slowly. One day two people meet and become casual acquaintances. Then, in several days, weeks, or even months they become friends. This friendship may result from something they have in common. It may be a class, a friend, or something much greater and beyond human understanding. Friendship is a bond between two individuals which may be capable of withstanding a great amount of pressure. But there are some friendships that are very tenuous, and are not capable of withstanding some of the everyday pressures exerted on them. But, regardless of the type of bond binding two people together, there is the ever-present possibility that it may be broken. The ideal friendship is that which is capable of withstanding any type of force exerted on it. In our modern society there are many forces present that can put the best friend- ship on shaky ground. Yet, deep within every man there is a drive to reach the plateau of the ideal friendship. All people experience friendship in some way. We experience it with our best friend, roommate, and to a limited degree our business associates. At Saint Leo College it is possible for both the students and the faculty to experience a deep and understanding friendship outside of the classroom because of our small classes. I have only given a few generalizations of the word friendship, but, as I said previ- ously, friendship is an impossible word for anyone to define, It is an experiential and emotional relationship that each individual must define for himself.
