l g :beokcafion f A .x H ,. sy Q XL 'F U I W E dedicate this year's Gridiron to a man who has given St. Lawrence and its students forty-two years of loyal service and devotion. Here we pay due tribute to Professor John Franklin Smith, Physics De- partment Head of the University. We are very proud that Professor Smith became a member of our faculty the same year he received his B.A. from St. Lawrence in 1915. Since then his en- thusiasm and hard work have given him even increas- ing honors. In 1919-1920, he studied physics at the University of Chicago and then returned to St. Law- rence to receive his M.A. in 1921. ln 1924, Professor Smith was made Assistant Professor of Physics and Physical Chemistry. Upon the death of Dr. Ward Priest, he very capably assumed his duties as head of the Physics Department. During the many years this man has been with St. Lawrence, his contributions have far exceeded only the academic side. Each of Professor Smith's former stu- dents will testify that they admire, respect and are inspired by his sincere and friendly interest in the individual student at St. Lawrence. His great enthusi- asm for learning and personal concern for young people have endeared him to all. Without a doubt, Professor Smith is one of the most versatile and highly regarded members of our faculty. In recognition and appreciation of forty-two years of warm friendliness, academic excellence and a vi- brant personality, we dedicate our 1957 yearbook to Professor John Smith.
