Basketball Hike rnuihe I hrilla The surprise team of the year for everybody at St. Laurence, except them of course, was the Viking Basketball stars. Led by Coach Prestinario on the bench and Brad Blokell and Bob St. Clair on the court, coaches Mr. Kruska and Br. Krammer helped the Vikes whip themselves into good shape for the IHSA tournament. After a mediocre regular season, the Vikes surprised everyone in taking the Richards Regional after being considered a long shot at best to win. Perhaps the most memorable moments of the year came at the expense of the St. Rita Mustangs in the Thornridge Sectional, where the Vikes with the consistant play of 6-6 Brab Blokell and inspired shooting and play- S 168 f Varsity Basketball making of Craig Gaska burned up the court. The fans went nuts. They were there in numbers too as the Vikes advanced to play Mendel after being embarrassed by them earlier in the season. The game was close all the way but Mendel emerged victorious. Although there seemed to be the air of victory even in the midst of defeat. The Vikes, true to Viking tradition, turned a good year into a great one and provided thrills for all. Top Right: Co-captain Bob St. Clair goes in for that lay-up. Left: Coach Kruska and Br. Hikes lgerfnrm mall The Viking Hockey Club performed well as usual. The club, coached by Coach Mr. Kur- zawski, went into the state quarterfinals although only finishing 7-7 in the Catholic League. Senior Joe Fowler was in particular a standout for the Vikes on ice. He was voted M.V.P. overall and on defense. Junior Mark Nutile led the Viking scoring attack as he led the Vikes in goals.
