7 1958 Volume. 23 Jlombuimok 12, MicluxfOu Ad, We Meet 12 Ad, We Study 34 Ad, We WoaJz 48 Ad, We Play 74 Qn JliA, 45tU AiwiiteAAGVuf,, We dedicate a the, Hallad f Oust JHcdLf, this humble collection of treasured memories garnered within the walls of this shrine erected to Christ and His Mother for the education and sanctification of youth. Rosary in hand, Father Majewski, like another Alfred, enchants through Our Lady’s intercession, the hearts of his youthful parishioners. His ballad is the 45-year span of his priestly life, each year of which tells of hidden but heroic deeds. His lyre is the rosary which he fingers inconspicuously many times a day as he strolls from the rectory to the church, to school and back. In ballad fashion, his refrain is the never-ending recurrence of new begin- nings — a temporary church, school, rectory, convent, followed by semi-permanent buildings. A few years later, another giant-size construction program includes a new church, the remodeling of the rectory, the convent, and the old church, the latter being converted into a permanent gym. But the master ballad singer in his zeal to give the very best lie could provide Tor his youthful charges, forgot to rest his lyre until the strings could no longer stand the tension, and gave way one by one. His ballad is a simple one — that of every pastor of a growing parish. No glamor surrounds the life of the parish priest. It is the monotonous refrain of a ballad, the sameness occasionally broken by little glints of true poetry, the visible good wrought for souls. We, the graduates of ’58. hope that these pages will prove to you, that through our education at the elementary and high school level, you have been instrumental in making us better Catholics and useful citizens. The thousands of student who have graduated from this, the first parochial high school in Hamtramck, will be eternally grateful to you. Father Majewski, for attracting them through Our Lady to Christ, through your ballad played upon the harp of your rosary. AD MULTOS ANNOS ! Reverend Anthony A. Majewski Pastor five Reverend Andrew Nieckarz the ViAia+i of a jUift gm£ Vihsvani GltAjAiia+i The priest like another Moses leads his people to a land of new vision, that of the Promised Land, that of a life with a new closeness to Christ and to apostolic times through a revival of the early Christian liturgy. He serves as a guide and an interpreter of the significance of the ancient ceremonies in the daily life of modern Christians. The Church, as if anticipating the second coming of Christ, is leading her children to a closer union with Christ by every possible means, even the restoration of the early liturgy. The priest serves as the link between the Church and her children. He holds the vision of eternal life before them to inspire them ever to a closer imitation of Him Who is the Beatific Vision. Out of the mouth of the Mother of God, . . . I call the muster of . . . men . . . To break and be broken, God knows when, But I have seen for whom. And this is the word of Mary, The word of the world's desire: ’No more of comfort shall ye get, Save that the sky grows darker yet And the sea rises higher’. But out of the mouth of the Mother of God I have seen the truth like fire. This—that the sky grows darker yet And the sea rises higher. With velvet finger, velvet foot, The fierce soft mosses then Crept on the large white commonweal . . . With little care for the Thames Valley Or what things there might be— The Mother of God goes over them, On dreadful cherubs borne; And the psalm is roaring about the rune. Reverend Robert Kowalski Athletic Director fpotl lL A season plagued with a depicted and lightweight squad, injuries, and bad breaks were some of the reasons why Greyhound gridders never seemed able to combine enough plays to merit a place on victory road. However, a dim record of 2-5 cannot completely overshadow the bright stars who brought the Scarlet- and-Gray into the end zone. The clicking combo of A1 Ketchie and Tom Dvki accounted for 3( points. Senior Bob Cech and Juniors A1 Kctchic, Frank Karczewski, and Jerry Morawski garnered All-City spots while Henry B dziuch drew Honorable Mention. An opening victory was blasted by a powerful Cath- erine’s machine which blanked the Greyhounds 33-0. Morale was low due to injuries suffered by Ricky Polakowski and Jerry 1’achla, key men. After battling the Scarlet-and-Gray for 3 quarters on even terms. Servite chalked up a 13 0 win. 'I'hc hope of a Hound victory was shattered by an 83-yard run. In a traditional game going the traditional way, St. 1-ad’s defeated Stannic’s 18-7. The Dyki-Kctchic combo accounted for all 3 touchdowns. The Greyhounds rolled over the Mountaineers, 20-7, as the Dvki-Ketchie com- bination clicked again to score. Next, stunning the Ladislite defense, the Lancers handed their queen a 12-0 victory. Then, superseding Ambrose in everything but the breaks, the Caniff 11 ’ lost 13-6. Polakowski ran 55 yards for the Lad’s lone score. Dominated by the charging line of the Teutons, the Greyhounds bowed 6-0 in the final tilt of the season. The squad encountered offense trouble that led to a minus- yardage final for practically all ball carriers. Richard Ccch Junior Varsity Coach tiW ! VI I i ROBERT CECH 5’ 10 - 155 lbs. Skillful dribbling, floor shots from far out, and fast breaks brought a 6-4 record for the small Can iff Five. In the first league game, the Greyhounds displaced defending champ Servite in a 67-55 duel. High scorers with points in double figures were Len Dziuk, Gene Barbish, AI Ketchie, and John Karp with 18, 16, 15, and 10 apiece. Lack of backboard control resulted in a loss to St. Florian’s, 67-52. Joe Mlodzianowski came through with 22 points and Len Dziuk with 12. Downing Ambrose 72-43, the Scarlet-and-Gray returned to the win col- umn with high pointers Dziuk and Ketchie. An overtime frenzy merely awarded the Caniffcrs a loss to the Broncos, 47-45, but Ketchie and Dziuk plus a willing second string, beat the Mountaineers, 68-50. After conquering the Warriors, 66 49, with the Dziuk-Ketchie combo, the quintet felled the Teutons as Dziuk, Karp, and Barbish flipped in 20, 15, and 10 points respectively. Lancer spears being too high, the Greyhounds fell 76-63, though Dziuk sank 28. Barbish 17, and Ketchie 10. Ik-hind the brilliant pitching of ace A1 Ketchie and the powerful hitting of such players as Dziuk, Karp, Kobylarz, and Drazkowski, the opposition never scored more than 3 runs. Consequently, the Scarlet-and-Gray took its fifth East Side Champion- ship. In the season’s first game, the Greyhounds shellacked the Lancers, 9-2, because of the 3-hit pitching of A1 Ketchie. D iuk and Kobylarz had a perfect day at the plate, getting 4 for 4, and 3 for 4. respectively. Behind Rokicki’s 4-hitter, the Canilf 9” repeated a 9-2 victory, this time over Ambrose. Following them the Blue Jays fell to the Scarlet-and-Gray, 5-1, under Ketchie's 3-hitter. Dziuk and Kobylarz collected 2 for 4. Then, climbing over the Broncos, the CanilTcrs won 5-1 on a Ketchie 2-hit. The Lancers bowed again to the Greyhounds, 8-2. Ketchie pitched a double-hit game and Karp had a 2-for-2 day. Clearing another hurdle, the Niners” behind Sophomore LeRoy Schultz's 2-hitter, trampled St. Mary's. Mt Clemens, 10-1. In their 20th win, the Greyhounds downed St. Ambrose, 4-0, on Ketchie’s two-hit jaunt to reclaim the East Side crown for a fifth successive season. His one-hitter, trouncing St. Mary, Redford, West Side Champs, 13-1, handed the team its right to go to Briggs Stadium to play Austin for the Parochial League title. ninety-one NOTCHES IN THE BAT We They St. Rita 14 S St. Fiorian 9 2 St. Ambrose 9 2 St. Joseph 5 1 St. Stanislaus 5 1 St. Fiorian 8 2 St. Mary.
