The Torch 1955 Volume 19 Published by the Seniors of St. Ladislaus High School Hamtramck, Michigan Ik 1 This Is OUR Life . . . Lads and Lasses . . . buoyant, spirited, wholesome . . . ever changing, ever growing . . . endowed with similar but not with the same physical traits. What makes us what we are — our appearance, our char- acter. our conduct? The interplay of heredity and environment. Coupled with mind and will, and fortified by grace, they spark each personality. We Lads and Lassies enter the play of life with the glow of youthful challenge. We accept our biological inheritance, transmitted through genes, however uncontrollable. For the de- velopment of our potentialities, however, we rely on environ- mental factors. Church, school, home, recreation, and friends reflect the attitudes, ambitions, skills, and habits of our teenage life. Affecting the character of our thinking and forming the basis of our conduct, environment aids us in our growth into adulthood. Life courses along in a ceaseless, whirring change with joys and sorrows, triumphs and achievements. In the light of the 1955 TORCH, we bring into full view St. Ladislaus High School. Having lived its life in an atmosphere teeming with principles of sound social living and in the companionship of youth pulsating with the vitality of Christ, lightly and confidently, we stop forth unto life's highway — readied to live as worthwhile Christians and worthy citizens in an ever changing world ... Fathor Anthony Majewski. pastor, exchanged banter with Ladislites and guests at the 28th Annual Football Banquet. It was sponsored by the International Kiwanis Club at the Tau Bota Community Center. Detroit Tiger pitcher Steve Gromok, 1938, wearing the look of succoss alter having gained tho cherished 20-game mark this year, beams at the unabated onthusiasm over Greyhound stamina, so char- acteristically expressed by Father Dolot, virile athletic director. Among SL senior gridders hosted was senior president, John Cech. Reverend A. A. Majewski Pastor All the world honors an ardent, upright leader . . . and so do we . . . candidly and wholeheartedly. Times may change, but leadership at St. Ladislaus does not. Top drawing of our esteem is Father Anthony Majewski. There are four ways of telling his leadership story: The magnitude of his priestly ad- ministration is impressive. His self-sacrificing devotion as pas- tor for thirty-three years has endeared him as an alter Christus in the hearts and minds, particularly of the youth in our parish. While sharing the delights of our tender years, his understanding per- meates us with a serene nobility, like that experienced when viewing the majesty of mountains from below. There is persuasion, too, in his mas- tery as a builder. Every obstacle sur- mounted brought its silent compensa- tion. First, was an elementary school, shortly followed by a two year com- mercial high. The establishment of a senior high school strengthened the sinewy existence of his parish. Affiliated with the University of Michigan, St. Ladislaus High, with an enrollment ex- ceeding five hundred, has taken its rank with the top five in the Archdio- cese of Detroit. That our hearts be further enshrined in faith and prayer, the construction of a modem Roman- esque church was completed in the Marian Year. Physical training, having been woven into the Scarlet and Gray fabric, the Greyhounds clinched cham- pionship titles in the three major sports. With an immediate conversion of the former church building to gym and auditorium purposes in the past year, an extensive recreation program has been put into effect this year. The 1955 Torch presents a glimpse of the dreams and plans realized in our regard. In token of their fulfillment as potent factors in our environment and soul life, we seniors of the nine- teenth graduating class, vote an acco- lade of thanks to Father Majewski, our benevolent pastor and masterful guide. Distinction is tho Scroll ataff's goal, oxplain top brass progress through eye-appeal, v ord choice, and loaturo Sylvia Engel and Don Warda to Father Majewski. upon angles, the Scroll was awarded the All-American rating reception ol tho morit certificate. They cleanse our souls through Penance. They strengthen our souls with the Holy Eucharist. They prepare us for family life by Matrimony. They forearm us for the last conflict with Extreme Unction. Bookkeeping Future Nursos Club Many moments of triumph vignette our school life . . . because of our teachers. . . . They express glad tidings upon our successes. With them, through classes and activities, we sing in harmony the songs of contentment. In the slow-beat bailiwick of study or on the shadowed road of failure their counsel offers comforting security. We are fond of our faculty, comprised of thirteen Sisters of St. Francis, whose mother- house is in Sylvania, Ohio. They give us reason for cherishing them with far more than a rippling memory. They present life in its true perspective as they unfurl the full mean- ing of spiritual values. Their teaching tenacity points up to the fact that purposefulness in life and a sense of duty are necessary for the development of the whole man. Our teachers, deeply cognizant of the dignity of the human person, impress us that to uphold this first principle of democracy is to safeguard man- kind. Energized by the charity and truth of Christ, as well as by the close knowledge of the teaching profession, acquired at such insti- tutions of wide recognition as the University of Michigan, Fordham. Notre Dame, St. Louis, Loyola, De Paul and the Catholic University of America, they sanction its traditional sacred- ness. In its complete realization is the crowning blessing of mankind. Sister M. This eager, wide-eyed bustling group may be found on every occasion, in every direction, peering through gates of adventure. Firmly clutching pencils in their hot little hands, with an all-out effort they bid for entrance through the Preliminary Tests. On opening day, these little lithe figures trippingly explore their new environs. Some nonplussed, others confident, greet and meet the upperclassmen. Searching out their classrooms, they soon discover, through burrowing knowledge and flickers of facts, the fundamental principles which integrate the course of Christian living. Our freshmen need no initiation. Picking up momentum, they knit an acquaintance through the Frosh Frolic, sponsored by their prexy and committees. A lesser few, bounding with energy, tumble their way as Jayvee Cheerleaders into the sports area. The freshmen precede the rank and file of our students in Mass attendance and in meeting Mission obligations . . . Opinion is undivided among us Ladislites, that the spirited devotion of our freshmen is first-rate. Never a quarter goes by that it does not capture the highest scholastic honors. Its intellectual vigor holds Freshmen agape. Clearly great is the sophs' strength of numbers. With its 150 enrollment, our scintillating students swell the total 515 — 50 more than last year. Unlike most others, these fireballs never lose their heat. Enthusiasm ran high at the Soph Sno-Ball Swirl, proceeds of which were turned toward the school benefit fund. Atop the Varsity and Jayvee sports heap — espe- cially baseball — may be found sophomore boys. Their precedence in number while serv- ing at the altar, and the attendance of the girls as they overcrowd the choir loft at each Junior Choir practice, bear testimony of their devotion to duty toward God and man. Indeed, our galaxy of sophomore talent, designedly diiferent, is tagged for higher things. With a brushfire flare, their know-how spreads into study, sports, and song. In their cavalcade of initiative, they seek and meet new challenges. Their efforts at scholarship always send a worthy number soaring to the front ranks. They broaden horizons of community life with the application of principles of government through Student Council duties in school and a day's visit to the State Capitol in Lansing, Michigan. On sandlot, grid, and court, brain and brawn of our Lads oft are caught in the spotlight glare. With the gay springtime air. Junior Choralier leads usher in ear-catching tunes and sprightly dances of the annual operetta. These self-sacrificing enthusiasts run full stream in the Mission magazine and stamp drives. Planning and producing, they sell Junior Achieve- ment's products of tomorrow. Come the close of another year, and time for the Junior-Senior Banquet. There's no hiding the regret and reluctance of the graduates as they bid farewell. Especially will they miss the camaraderie of our hosting juniors. Their abil- ities and dignity grace every phase of student life. Theirs is an interest with a future. Current com- munity problems stir them to voice their opinions. In a rousing panel on the Junior Town Hall Meeting of the Air, the seniors discussed the transfer of industry in relation to the management's moral obligations. For a broader view of democratic government the senior class took a jaunting trip to the Nation's Capitol during the Spring vacation. On the side of the footlights. Senior Choristers combined Thespian art with newly truly beautiful cos- tumes. Thus, they emphasized the Nativity as the ground-root of Catholic Action. Talent's the ticket, to- gether with the ability to feel the pulse of the student body, that the Scroll staff and the Torch editors used for gathering news and views. These Ladislites are sportsminded, too. In regal splendor. Her Majesty the Queen, and her attending lovelies enhanced the Greyhound court. The L-Club boasts of the largest number of Senior lettermen in the history of the school. Also the graduation will dis- pense with the first four-year girls' corps of the Cheer- leading Squad. The seniors' top-flight performance, of course, is scholastic. Their achievement, symbolized by the gold tassel and cord worn in the silent file of the graduates' ranks, bespeaks the crowning triumph of their success. 21 JOHN CECH St Augustine 13636 Dean TW 2 0370 President 1-2-4; C.S.M.C. 1-2-3-4; Student Council 1-2-3-4; Torch 4; Student Govern- ment 4; Football 1-2-3-4. ROBERT OTROMPKE Left Tackle RAY ZALEWSKI Left Tackle The Greyhound quintet, led by Hamtramck All-City Tom Condon, though missing a .500 season by two setbacks, came up with some brilliant playing in its 4-8 record in Catholic league competition. Cage captain Condon tallied 80 field goals and 40 foul shots for a total of 209 points. The four-year Varsity player made his best showing in the 64-47 surprise upset over the perenially powerful St. Anthony Teutons. Following close at his captain's heels in the scoring race was Leonard Grabowski, a first-year Varsity player. As a junior, Len paced the J.V.'s to an East Side championship. His average playing in the early part of the season suddenly caught fire in the last battles of his career. In the annual Varsity- Alumni game, with the breakaway play, which is one of Len's most potent weapons of bombarding the foes, he peppered the meshes with seven tallies. These points, coupled with 7 charity tosses, jumped his total to 21 points. A valuable player of three years' experience, rangy Bob Rachas has held the center slot. With his hook shot specialty. Bob has had moments of glory, leading the SLH cagers in the St. Stanislaus and Hamtramck encounters. Stellar forward Bob Elgin, a late entrant because of injuries suffered in the first semester, came through with some startling plays in the St. Stanislaus game. Bernard Glappa, a capable guard, was also an asset to the Greyhound squad throughout the season. With his terrific set shots, he set up numerous tallies for the forwards. His best effort was an eleven-point total in the 64-47 victory over the St. Anthony Teutons. The Greyhound aggregation, as well as the fans, will never forget his determination, fight, and drive which sparked the team whenever hopes were dimmed. Speody senior guard, Bomard Glappa (19), as the nemesis of the opposing fives, cuts the cords with a jump shot for two points. Unable to fully control the backboard, the little quintet gave way in the final fray to the more experienced De La Salle Pilots who swooped away the crown. The Jayvee hoopsters' .666 average, however, can- not be overlooked in the prediction of the Greyhound cage future. The present squad makes promising Vars- ity material, according to cage mentor Bob Samaras. Topping the Scarlet and Gray Jayvee scoring ledger were Captain Ray Kozuch, Bob Lukasiewicz, and Leonard Dziuk. GREYHOUND PITCHING, HITTING, AND FIELDING GAINS SECOND CROWN The Greyhounds had the right combination for a championship team . . . superlative pitching, exceptional fielding, and a robust attack. We had spirit . . . baseball savvy . . . teamwork . . was Coach Bob Samaras' praise- worthy comment about his boys at Briggs Stadium after the final baseball game. St. Ladislaus Hi downed Royal Oak Shrine, 7-1, to capture the Catholic League's first Division Championship for the second straight year. The Grey- hounds' unbeaten record of eleven league and non-league games, combined with the five-run uprising in the fifth inning of the title game, came as a tonic to Father Majewski, their most ardent booster, who because of illness was unable to attend the games. This is Mr. Samaras' first year with the Greyhounds. With Leonard Butch Lubanski and southpaw Leonard Grabowski — two of the most outstanding high school hurlers in the state — the SLH pitching staff held its own with the sluggers. Lubanski sports a 6-0 record with 50 strikeouts and has allowed only three runs. Left-hander Grabowski has a 2-0 record with 25 strikeouts and has only given up one in two games. The team's batting mark was led by Len Grabowski's .702 average. Edwin Borucki and Robert Rachas shared the batting honors of a .400 average with pitchers Lubanski and Grabowski, catcher Obrycki, and shortstop Kotowicz. The loss through graduation of the latter four seniors will be felt by the Greyhound fans. They may follow in the footsteps of their coach. It is almost a certainty, however, that several of the players will be made offers to play professional ball with major or minor leagues, or to enter college. The veterans were intense competitors, having participated in the various baseball squads, organized by athletic director Father Francis Dolot. They won the Catholic League title last season, the American Legion state champion- ship under the name of Ternstedt, and the State Recreation and Pony League titles. They will remain idols of long-standing to the St. Ladislaus small fry playing in the Hamtramck Pee-Wee League, the Little League and in the Battalion Eight in the Fireman League.
