TORCH Published by the SENIOR CLASS + SAINT LADISLAUS HIGH SCHOOL Hamtromck, Michigan Torch Enkindled The TORCH of 1950 is the symbol of our lives. They burn slowly, unstead- ily, defectively like o torch until they are purified by the consuming love of Christ, the light of the world. This TORCH, then, we hond to you, the underclassmen; hold it high as a guide to those who follow in our footsteps. Age AT THE HIGH NOON of the atomic age, His Holiness Pope Pius XII has proclaimed 1950, the Holy Year of Jubilee. It is not without reoson that the Sovereign Pontiff colls us to added effort toward sanctification and spiritual improvement. In this age of atomic energy with a more powerful hydrogen bomb already in its concep- tion, there is only one path of safety left to mankind, that of perfect preparedness for eternity, o life based on the preservation of sancti- fying grace. THE HOLY FATHER, like so many of his predecessors, is again warning men against innovations and inventions which will ulti- mately lead to their own detriment and annihilation. Heedless man ignored the papol warnings against communism, divorce, euthana- sia and the like, and today he is reaping their bitter fruit. MAY THE COUNSEL of the Vicar of Christ be followed by us, the children of His flock. Let us by prayer and penance obtain pardon and forgiveness for ourselves, and let us help, ot least in some small measure, to appease God's just anger. Let us beg God's mercy for those who flaunt their rebellious wills before the God Who gave them the gifts with which they offend Him. May this golden year of the atomic century turn its remaining precious moments into years of holiness and salvation, so that through Christ, the Head of His Mystical Body, the Church, we may oil rejoice in Heaven. To You, the Master Torch Bearer . . . WE, THE CLASS OF 1950, dedicate this annual as a token of our sincere appreciation. It is a humble but treasured synopsis of all the joy and pleasure we have experienced during the four years spent at St. Ladislaus High School. We hope this little volume will express our gratitude and serve as a pledge of loyalty to our Alma Mater. YOU ARE THE NOBLE TORCH-BEARER, who daily at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass lifts on high Christ, the Light of the world, so that we may purify the torch of our lives in the fire of Euchar- istic love. You have provided us with the highest type of moral and intellectual education because you have realized only too keenly, that in the world of today, men have become nuclear giants. Men have mastered the secrets of science and knowledge, but have failed to learn that all these are a gift of God and that unless men turn back to God and His moral law, they will become moral adolescents and ethical infants. By guiding us spiritually, entrusting our train- ing to religious teachers, and providing all the sacramental aids to Christian living, you have forestalled the possibility of spiritual shipwreck. You have provided us with a torch that will light our paths to the eternal goal, Heaven. Illuminator of Our Way REVEREND A. A. MAJEWSKI As Other Christs • • • THE PRIESTS OF OUR PARISH hove coun- seled us in doubt, strengthened us in faith, lighted our way in gloom and discourage- ment, and guided us along the path of virtue. They have shown us that only by staying in the white light of the Eucharist, can we attain to the fullness of Christ. For these many spiritual benefits, we are sin- cerely grateful. REVEREND T. J. Daya, her maid, foretells that Chonita will take a long journey and that she will meet her lover. There- upon, Stefon, o tribesman, mokes known his love for Chonito, who refuses his advances because Murdo, her father, to fulfill her mother's death bed request, is sending her to Budapest accom- panied by Daya, to live with her relatives, Baron and Baroness Stanescu, rich white Hungarians. Their son Konrad, enamored of Chonita, tells her of his deep love for her unaware of the fact that Stefan, hired to sing at the court, has walked into the room. Chonita is embarrassed, whereas Stefan is grieved by this scene. Word of Murdo's acci- dent, however, brings Chonita, Stefon, Dayo, and Konrad to camp. Eventually Konrad is bored with gypsy life and is only too glod to comply with the prediction of the stars, to return to Budapest. Kukurowski and his assistant, D. Oolsando, look none too pleasant ot the prospect of a defeat which is depicted so clearly on the faces of the gridders. — 5i — . . . the light of fortitude that strengthens heroes . . . With feet off the ground the Greyhounds mode a name by means of their aerial plays. The Kowal- czyk-Siatczynski pass in the Hamtramck High game ended in a moral victory over a highly touted team. Then, the Witkowski Trophy became our possession when o Kowalczyk-to-Kozanski-to-Novak pass, and an intercepted pass spelled the doom of the Bronco Eleven. The first defeat of the season, however, came ot the hands of St. Joseph's gridders on a safety, in spite of the fact that our team outplayed the Blue Jays. Al- though our gridders were fleet, they did not outstrip St. Anthony's hard- hitting Teutons whose yardage totaled 453 to our 270 yards. Do you re- member Kazanski's 50-yard run which the De La Solle team failed to block and which gave us the victorious touchdown? Last, but not least, the reserve team had one victory to its credit in St. Mary's push-over 32 to 6. But, all's well that ends well, and the Goodfellows Game with St. Florian's deflated our Greyhounds by a one-point victory even though our boys outsmarted them in yardage 374 to 161. Edward Kukurowski, B.S.E. Football Coach SPARKS FLY ON THIS GRIDIRON Co-captain Kozanski bowls his way through a hole opened for him during G. Ziskie (10) and Captain A. The only excep- tion to this jinx was Catholic Central, but then the Irish trampled down every opponent. The Quintet showed plenty of fighting spirit and good ball handling but so did the oppo- nents. The teams seemed so evenly motched that it was hard to predict who would win any game.
