P Ylineieen Owdy-thAze. ' TORCH Published by the 1943 SENIOR CLASS ST. LADISLAUS HIGH SCHOOL ★ Keeping pace with the industry of today, St. Ladislaus High aspires to provide for its students education with an adequate religious back- ground for successful living. The Alma Mater sheltered its inmates from evil influences . . . Turned the minds and hearts of youth to noble ideals . . . Taught the students to use their knowledge so that they and those they contact may benefit . . . Prepared all to emerge with sufficient knowledge of life s devious path. The objective—to make this a foundation where every one may store up courage and love—an accomplishment by which we live has been constantly pursued. tyatlt i Majeupihi . . . jbedicatian In this unprecedented chaos, the Torch pauses to dedicate this copy to our pastor, Rev. A. A. Majewski. We extend our tribute to him, who so strongly promulgated the building of character for the Church, and for Christian democracy. Each activity, each class event under his direction, fostered in every student, virtue and leadership. In memory of our days at St. Ladislaus, we proudly turn these pages of Modern History, gratified that this annual is a tribute of deference, loyalty, and love to our Pastor. REVEREND A. A. MADEJA ★ (Dun. The contributing force in tf REVEREND F. J. SZANIAWSKI With combined efforts, our faculty priests and sisters strove to correlate our religious training with language, literature and scholastic ability. Great is their objective—to train the young minds in the realms of honesty, courage and patriot- ism so that all may prove worthy members of the Catholic Church and of this great society. REVEREND J. RZASA In the midst of the school days, the students paused on March 29-30-31 to prepare for spiritual defense by making a Re- treat. As a special time of prayer, recollection, and introspection, the students realized this holy time as one of the dominant notes which not only dears confronting spiritual disturbances, but trains for successful and improvod living. Defense from evil and de- fense of the soul are the immediate objectives which every young man and woman treasures. In the series of conferences, Father Rzasa who gave the retreat, stressed the value of the soul —man's inestimable possession, the patriotism every individual owes to Sod and country, and the need of prayer. An hour before the Most Holy To direct the retreatants to a blessed life here and a sublime and noble life hereafter, Father Rzasa emphasized the recompense for loyalty to God's commandments especially the purity of mind and body. QinAt Aid To instruct secondary school students in the practice and knowledge of First Aid, Federal and school authorities suggested that these stu- dents enroll in First Aid classes under the di- rection of volunteer instructors in their own schools. Keeping in mind the great need of those who in time of emergency may act quickly and ef- ficiently, the Juniors of our high schoool have undertaken the study of First Aid. Sister M. Florian is the instructor in this study. Plw Aiccd Military authorities have proclaimed that the preparation of recruits for tho armed forces would bo more rapid if the young men of today were in better physical condition. To holp speed up the training of men for action, tho high schools of tho country hove indicated their eagerness to make the maximum contribution to the war effort by introducing a physical education courso for all high school boys and girls. Such a program was undertaken by our own Alma Mater, St. Ladislaus. Working on a minimum basis of two periods a week tho Seniors and Juniors hove endeavored to dovolop their strength, onduranco, siamina and bodily coordination. During the colder woathor, these dosses were hold indoors. However, as the days bocamc warmer, the classes woro moved outdoors where the boys have the full advantage of the fresh air and sunshine. Studenti be enie Preparing to supplement the shortage of experienced factory workers in defense plants, the Seniors of our high school have undertaken a preliminary training program under the auspices of the National Youth Administration. This program offors various courses in drafting, machine shop, radio, welding, riveting, electrical repair and many other fields. After only four months, the operating and handling of boring machines, lathes, external and internal grinders, etc., has become as simple as tho changing of a record on a phonograph or the tuning of a radio. Although this program brought about a change in the schedule of classes, and occupied much of their leisure time, the students showed a fine spirit of cooperation and the will to learn. Fire Brigade in action Student Council cn masse Student Council The Student Council his accomplished many things in the course of the year. Among tho most notable are that of super- vising, so effectively the Upond-Down traffic system at St. Ladislaus. At every assembly and school activity, this group helped to promote order and maintain an atmosphere of attention among the students. It asked nothing else but the full-hearted cooperation in difficult and discouraging times of keeping the alert and energetic student in his place.
