It is our good fortune to gradttate in this all-important year and to realize. alter spending liour years in St. Justin School. how very inueh has been at'c'on1plished by our de- voted pastor and his zealous assistant. For twenty-live years Father Barry has labored in the interests ol' his spiritual children. and lor sixteen years Father O l'oole has been his capable assistant. In their parish nothing has been lelt un- done. No religious activity. no held ol' Catholic' endeavor. no type ol' priestly work, has been overlooked by theni. 'llhey have given its lreely of their tinie, their thought, and their experience. 'llhat there is no return lor their generosity we know: we can only seize this brief opportunity to express all the adniiration and gratitude our hearts can eotnntand, in tribute to our noble priests, REV IOHN B. BARRY and REV. MARTIN I. O TOOLE 0 at 4221429 Our year book would not be complete without a special tribute to those all important persons -our Mothers and our Fathers-who have given us everything we have thus lar enjoyed in life. It is they who have made sacriiices for us, who have de- nied themselves for us, who have labored lor us. It is they who chose this splendid Catholic School lor us and who watched with unwavering interest our progress through the past four years. It is they who praised us when we succeeded. consoled us when we failed, and encouraged us when we hesitated. It is they who now rejoice that we have reached our own first goal, and who, in their pleasure and satisfac- tion, seem to forget that they and not we are the real vic- tors, for without them what could we have accomplished? We therefore seize this opportunity-a few days before graduation-to felicitate them, ere they congratulate us, to laud them, ere they laud us, and to thank them, from the bottom oi' our hearts, for being what they are. Today we are graduatingg tomorrow we begin a new life: but yester- day! . . . Yesterday we entered St. Justin High School. VVe expected much . . . and got it. Four years of friendships, of' ups and downs, of suc- cesses and failures: four years of character formation, of discipline, and of training: four years of' mingled duty and fun, four years of slips and lapses, four years of regrets and rejoicings. If we escaped initiation, we were victims of a divided freshman class. YVe presented plays, partici- pated in sports, and sponsored a memorable Breakfast for the Seniors at the Mayflower Hotel. A prom came our way. YVe planned it with good taste and pleasure, and enjoyed it on a balmy night in May. We staged a Mardi Gras festival as juniors and again as seniors. If we became in- volved individually and collectively in many a scrape, We also won a Spelling Bee and a Mass Attendance Record. Three of' our boys brought honor to our school as debaters, and three of our girls did us proud as 'fharmonizers.H Four of' our classmates won scholarships, and ten of' our number made the Glee Club. The most valuable football player, and the star basketball player are both members of our class. I Of' one heart, of one creed, and of one philosophy, we have been trained for purposeful living. From the hills of Beechview, Brookline, Beltzhoover, and the Mount, they came to St. justin's - the only year the football team didnft do so well. In this year they accentuated their youth by staging The M'11.si1'zLf Sclzoolroom, starrin Geor e Short Pants Cronin, and the memorable . . 3 , . g , ., production Archibald. 1 hey were voted l oo Hot to Handle. Came the sophomore year and with it Detention Hall, the Monitor System, and the separation of the sexes . . . the boys to the right and girls to the left with different ideas and separate officers. Though the theme song of both groups was I Gel Along Without You Very VVell, the classes were not divided in spirit for they can boast of sponsoring jointly the most successful Breakfast ever given for a graduating class. And yet there was a distinctive spirit of independence: The men folk made a fabulous sum chancingl' a radio ..., S uns les fenznzes, and the girls retaliated by staging a delightful St. Patrick's Day Uperetta .... s 'uns les hmmnes. As sophisticated juniors they joined forces, these boys and girls, and then were divided into mixed groups A and B. One of their members was the only girl on the championship debating team, another girl won first prize in the Spelling Bee, and many of their boys starred in sports. They planned an elaborate prom, went patriotic and didactic in their assembly programs, racked their brains to solve formulas, and dug deep into their pockets to pay for broken test tubes. They argued in French, differed in Latin, and refuted in Shorthand. THE MEN BEHIND THE MEN WITH THE BALL Wlien the fans give a lusty cheer for a deciding touchdown or roar approval from the grandstands for a clever play, it is not always remembered that months before the game a magnificent piece of Work has already been done by a group of men basically responsible for the ath- letic life at St. Justin High School. We refer to the most efficient organization in the parish-the Athletic Association. Organized in 1938 'Lto assist the Rev- erend Priests to carry out an Athletic policy in St. Justin School, and to give all possible moral and material aid in the training of youth, the A. A. has func- tioned successfully ever since its first meeting. It has taken care of all expenses con- nected with coaching, outlitting, and transporting the teams, it has provided for injured players and has feted the vic- tors. And that's not all-these men have given their time and their money-indr vidually and collectively-to inspire and promote good clean sportsmanship among the youth of the parish. By their example and encouragement they have outlined a program which every high school athlete will Wish to follow in later life. The justinian Stall feels that this is the proper place to express the apprecia- tion of the student body to the persons Who made the plans and provided the background for such a brilliant season of athletics in 1941-1942. Tlmlnlmnl. 48 XVhen the 1942 basketball season opened we faced the foe with a world of confidence. Now that everything is over we still retain that con- hdence . . . despite the fact that we often INCL defeat. XVe retain it because we are sure we did our best . . . and because we know that it is much harder to lose than it is to win. Good sportsmanship has always been our goal-and that's a goal no one need miss. If our basket- ball season was not as glorious as our football experience, it still was no mean showing. NVC won more games than we lost, we made third place in the league, and we attracted and satis- fied a large following. YVe got off to a great start by winning the hrst and second league games. The opening contest with St. Luke ended in a 32-I4 victory for St. Justin in spite of the fact that we were on the short end. Our next game was with St. Mary of the Mount. The pre-game prophets gave them the victory by a margin of l0 to I5 points, but we gave them the surprise of their lives when with a minute to go and leading by 27 to 25 we froze the ball for the biggest upset of the year! The game with St. Basil was un- fortunate from the start. Becker put four in a row through the strings and we never caught up . . . final score, 26-lti. There followed an easy victory for St. -Ioseph's strong aggregation . . . a 35-I8 defeat for us. Our next encounter was a thriller. XVith a minute to go we were leading, 2l to 17. Vie began freezing the ball Intl lost no time in swishing four points through the hoop to tie the game up as the gun sounded. Forced to play three minutes overtime, neither team scored, but in the second overtime period Straub and Mosh of St. George made baskets and defeated us, 25 to 2l. At the start of the game with St. Veronica, it looked like a walk-away for our opponents. ,-Xt the half we trailed by a score of I5 to 4. lint we kept plugging away and we brought the AND TAKE THIRD PLACE IN THE CATHOLIC LEAGUE score to IG-I2 at the third quarter. The very last minute again proved fatal to us. The score was 2l to 20 their way when we missed a foul shot that would have tied the game. Opponent O'Brien put the game in for his team with a long shot that made the score 23-20. The return game with St. George was a dif- ferent story. Early in the game we took the lead and kept it to the end, when the score was 33-20. XVe had a return game with St. Basil which was close throughout. A tie at the half, it looked like a close victory for St. until the boys from Carrick tied it up at 20 all. The three minutes overtime was all Rufiing- of the opposing team. He intercepted five passes and turned them into points. The second game with St. Luke was more like football and, as in football, we f'0IlflllCl'CCI with a score which was very close-20-25. Our return game with St. Mary of the Mount proved that they conldn't win them all on their own floor. MR: heat them by a score of 26-l5 . . . the first time St. Justin ever beat them at home. Again we met St. Veronica and they avenged their first defeat by leading us all the way through to a final score of 23-17. St. 'loseph's, the future champs of the league, made an early lead and kept, it. Our opponents were unbeatable on their own floor, and final score was 33-20 their way. In addition to the above games, we played twelve non-league games and one tournament. Statistics reveal that we chalked up 510 points to the opponents' 567, and that's not a bad record for a team boasting of only one senior player. Outstanding among the individual scorers were Captain Bob Brill, who pierced the hoop with 00 points, Larry Mangan, who rated sec- ond with 89, while Debecco, Fortunato, Doran and Burke came next with 63, 57, 38 and 31 points, respectively. 7?-aiu Ze .gczfion VG N91 .34 W W 1 I IN WHICH ARE RECORDED SOME SPECIAL ACTIVITIES OF THE PUPILS THE GLEE CLUB CLIMAXES After a winter ol lIll'Ol'lH?ll practices i11 tl1e cozy c1ua1'ters ol' the studio, the choristers delighted tl1e student body and faculty 011 Fridziy, May lst, with a concert ol' well-selected 11llll1lJCl'S.
