JosEPH,s COLLEGE, PHILADELPHIA 31, PA. DECEMBER Editor-in-Chief Charles A. Goglia shows his Sports Editor Earl Simmons a few points of HAWK style. The HAWK staff: l. to r. sitting, I. Nardi, I. Neary, G. O'Connor, S. McEwen, I. Haenn, Business Man- ager, I. O'Malley, C. Mungan, M. Meade, standing, D. Boberti, C. McMahon, P. Edmunds, L. Esmonde E. Simmons, Sports Editor, C. Goglia, Editor-in-Chief I I The ancient and honorable profession of jour- nalism has always held a fascination for the average person. Everyone is easily attracted by the blaring headlines, modest by-lines and brutal deadlines. And who doesn't like to see his own name in print? Perhaps it is for reasons such as these that the HAWK has flourished so well in its twenty odd years of existence. But while the bi-weekly HAWK is received eagerly by the students, few realize the amount of work and planning that goes into the preparation of each issue. Any campus fourth-estater can tell you about the routine: assignments out, Wednesday deadline, copy night Thursday, dummy night Mon- day, on the stands Thursday. And then it begins all over again. During the long night working sessions, Charlie Goglia directs the crew of seniors and underclass- men from behind the Editor's desk. Some write headlines, some type, some do rewrite work. On dummy night, there are galley sheets to proofread and captions, pictures, jumps and ads to worry about. Layout Editor Bill Iohnson supervises the make-up of the big jigsaw puzzle. Business Manager Ioe Haenn brings in his ads while his associate Bob Kane balances the books. Later in the evening the coffee and bun editor takes over, bringing in refreshments for the tired and hungry journalists. After the finished copies return from the printer, Circulation Manager Stan Peszka sees that the HAWK reaches the news- hungry students. And then the job is done. The HAWK is out. I. Devers, B.
