Associate Professor of Philosophy Father Dincher ot Iunior Storg Porty UZ- . 'fi P, v NN e g iaith 7564 3046- a 014 mow Za Rev. Frederick N. Dincher, S. I., was one of those rare men who possessed both a theologi- cal vision that is reminiscent of Iohn the Beloved, and a gentleness of spirit that is seen only in those who are close to God. All those who know the spiritual heights he was able to reach in his lectures, know what it is to soar like an eagle over the extent of human knowl- edge and bounds of human suffering. Whether lecturing upon the limping mind of man, or the fiery comets over the Bontoc Mountains in Northern Luzon, or the wheels of a slowly moving cart, he would always seem to point and say, See how God provides for you. See how God loves you. The significance of the truth he taught was radiated and heightened by his loving familiar- ity with it and his individual way of presenting it. Very few will forget his description of the lunior-Faculty Baseball Game, Fr. Dincher, second from left, contemplates teammate s hit. . :aa L yxfsfg- M '.1.g,-if ,.- A . M Xa p f5'FfQ5fiff.s+ff i' race for supremacy among the religions of the world. 'The shaggy horse of Christianity was newly entered against the magnificent stallions of Paganism. Years passed and the horses paced upon the concourse below. The stallions have long since quit the race, but the slow, hard trot of Christianity continues over the ages and through time, never stopping, never rest- ing till all the world should come to the knowl- edge and love of Christ and His Church.' The Graduating Class of '53 look to Father Dincher and the Iesuits who remain with us, for personal inspiration and intellectual assistance in the struggle against paganism and powers of evil in this working day world. May we bear our trials as this man did, for his character was wrought in the white-heat of prolonged suffering and turned by God's grace to pure gold. Archbishop of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania In this final opus, our last collective endeavor toward something creative, we pay humble respect and honor to a world famous priest, distinguished speaker and writer, a pro- ficient military delegate, a renowned educator and an efficient administrator-The Most Rev- erend Iohn F. O'Hara, Archbishop of Phila- delphia. Through his warm personal disposition, his keen acumen for religious organization, and his deep, but always tender, understanding of humanity, Archbishop O'Hara has endeared himself to the hearts of his flock ever since his installation as Archbishop. No one can seriously doubt that this sol- dier of God ranks with the great men of our time. After his ordination to the priesthood in the Congregation of the Holy Cross, Archbishop O'Hara distinguished himself at the University of Notre Dame when he was appointed pro- fessor of religion and later elected president of this same University. While at Notre Dame, he published numerous religious bulletins that were eagerly carried by even foreign news- papers. An expert in Latin American affairs, he was chosen delegate to the Eighth Inter- American Congress by President Roosevelt and while in South America he made an extensive study of its school systems. As a Military Delegate in the Second World War he visited many members of the armed forces, baptizing and confirming scores of soldiers and sailors. Previous to his position in Philadelphia, Arch- bishop O'Hara commanded the high office of Bishop of Buffalo, where his prowess as teacher and educator continues to be recognized by the many educational degrees conferred upon him here. , To this humble warrior of Christ, then, for all that he has done for a troubled, distressed and ignorant world, we inscribe the Great- onian. Pew men are born with rare talents, rarely are men born with such great talents. 4 1 7a 7756014 ' . . . A Friend To All REV. VACHEL I. BROWN, SJ. The consecration of oneself to God and to his work involves no little personal sacrifice, so that only a few, and they only through His grace, can meet the exacting challenge. He is the exceptional man who walks always and everywhere with Christ and whose every act is ex- pressive of this singular dedication. At this time we express our deep regret at the loss of such a man, as.it is our con- viction that Father Miles O'Malia was indeed such a man. :, ?u . . He is one whom innocent children grow to love, to venerate, and to reverence . . . He is one whose is to. console the afflicted and soften the pains of the body and soulg who is the intermediary between the affluent and the indigentp to whose door come alike the rich and the poor to receive them without blushing. He belongs to no social class because he belongs equally to all-to the lower by his poverty-to the upper by his culture and knowledge and, by the elevated sentiments which a religion, itself all charity, inspires and imposes. y A Great Teacher . . . The Living Rosory I WHAT WE ARE Continuing a tradition of 390 years stand- ing, the St. Ioseph's College Sodality, itself 102 years old, is an association of Our Lady Whose members aim at personal sanctity and apos- tolic Work. . Striving to live up to his consecration to Mary, the Sodalist conforms his faith and life entirely to the faith and morals which the Catholic Church teaches. Further, since Sodal- ists are Mary's visible hands on earth he steps into the Social Apostolate to work for the sanctification of others and to spread and defend the Catholic Church. Since the Sodality fulfills the essentials for Catholic Action, viz., ill organization, f2l a mandate from the Bishop, and 13? members who are intent on personal sanctity, it is no Wonder that the Holy Father has declared that the Sodality may be called with the fullest right 'Catholic Action under the auspices and inspiration of the Blessed Virgin Mary.' In accord With the aim of Apostolic Work, some Sodalists are scout leaders, others are readers to the blind at Overbrook, some pro- vided a Christmas entertainment at the Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged. The combined Sodalities took the orphans from St. Iohn's to the St. Ioseph-Georgetown basketball game, and also conducted a Square Dance to point the Way to Wholesome recreation. Moreover, the Sodality arranged for the establishment of a Confraternity of Christian Doctrine unit on the campus, took over the Snow Ball netting 5550.00 for the Iesuit Mis- sions and established the 25-Club for the Iesuit Missions. I l 25 . s X 'a775 Never has so much depended on so few since the Battle of Britain! There were two enemies to beat, money and time. The money came in slowly while Ioe Haenn, the Business Manager, prayed and pleaded for more-while a few like Tom Smith and Marty Adams went seeking ads. Occasionally situations arose which are humorous in retrospect but weren't so at the time. For example, the contractor who wouldn't pay for his ad until he was sure his name was spelled correctly in it. tHe had forgotten that he had requested, Compliments of a friend l. Nevertheless, for the first time in some years, the Great- onian was completely paid for before it went to press. The Battle of Time was something else. Deadlines, the usual thorn, became only part of this year's battle. Uncle Sam also caused hardships. A week before final deadline he even claimed Iim Clark, our Editor-in-Chief. Since the classbook was not due until late summer or early fall, the staff thought to give the project full attention by doing the majority of the work after the closing rush of school. In so doing, however . . . Due to a consistent few like Frank Coyne. and Bill Iohnson who were willing to try -their hand at anything and every- thing, the gaps in the ranks were filled. If, in a hundred years of play production the Cap and Bells had ever faced a crucial test, the undertak- ing of HAMLET was that test. Behind the club were the triumphs of Antigone, of Twelfth Night, and the previous standard of perfection, Othel1o. A failure now, a flub of the greatest drama, would topple years of building. Production started, intense from the very beginning in mid-summer. There were squalls, bumps, and obstacles to be surpassed but the triumphant climax, HAMLET, was reward for all, the eclipse of all previous accomplishments. The credit for this success cannot go to one man, but must go to everyone connected with this produc- tion, to prexy and production manager Ianke, to Frank Hamlet Roach, to designer King Heine, to the ladies of the show: Misses Mary Dooley and Mona Flanigan. To name the rest of those who made this Centennial production a true reward for one hundred years work would be to list each and every member of the club, therefore we can only say congratulations. Goglia, Editor-in-Chief I I The ancient and honorable profession of jour- nalism has always held a fascination for the average person. Everyone is easily attracted by the blaring headlines, modest by-lines and brutal deadlines. And who doesn't like to see his own name in print? Perhaps it is for reasons such as these that the HAWK has flourished so well in its twenty odd years of existence. But while the bi-weekly HAWK is received eagerly by the students, few realize the amount of work and planning that goes into the preparation of each issue. Any campus fourth-estater can tell you about the routine: assignments out, Wednesday deadline, copy night Thursday, dummy night Mon- day, on the stands Thursday. And then it begins all over again. During the long night working sessions, Charlie Goglia directs the crew of seniors and underclass- men from behind the Editor's desk. Some write headlines, some type, some do rewrite work. On dummy night, there are galley sheets to proofread and captions, pictures, jumps and ads to worry about. Layout Editor Bill Iohnson supervises the make-up of the big jigsaw puzzle. Business Manager Ioe Haenn brings in his ads while his associate Bob Kane balances the books. Later in the evening the coffee and bun editor takes over, bringing in refreshments for the tired and hungry journalists. After the finished copies return from the printer, Circulation Manager Stan Peszka sees that the HAWK reaches the news- hungry students. And then the job is done. The HAWK is out. I. Devers, B. This dream was the successful overseas debate tour of Ireland and England which climaxed in a debate before the Union Society of Oxford University. This will long be remembered by the Villiger members. A busy season of debate found Villiger teams entered in five tournaments. The Annual Interna- tional Debate was presented during the first semes- ter and was held in the Flanigan Auditorium. Catholic High Schools in the area received the benefit of the collegiate debate experience of the Villiger men as Villiger coached their teams and judged their debates. In the Spring, the Annual Catholic Forensic League Tournament was sponsored by the Villiger. This year also marked an increase in civic group appearances and lecturing engagements. Interest in debating resulted in a large membership for the Society. The officers for the 1952-53 season were Austin P. Dilworth, president, Ioseph T. English, vice president and Frank W. Carroll, manager. A half- century of forensic experience and success insures CI future of progress by the Villiger Debating Society. The Iudges Panel of The International Debate. 1. to r. Mr. H. It was just the right combination of these two that found the Club making appear- ances in Reading, Pottsville, Camden, Lakewood, Westmont, and Wilmington. After another triumphant Noel Night at Saint Ioseph's, came more tours taking the Gleemen to the neighbor- ing Colleges of Chestnut Hill, Rosemont, Immaculatta, and Georgian Court. The acclaimed success of the Glee Club may be credited to the outstanding ability of the Club's director, Mr. Herbert Fiss, to choose a well rounded group of numbers for his boys to sing. Mr. Piss is an accomplished violinist who started his musical career before he was seven years old. In the past decade or more he has gained a wonderful reputation through- out the East for his music lessons, choral direction, and orchestra conduction. A true professional musician who does Wonders with a group of inexperienced, untrained voices, blends them together into an excellent choir. The highlight of this season, as in past years, was reached with the Club's presentation on Mother's Day. This again brought another successful year to an even more suc- cessful close. To further this objective the society invites prominent business men to address the group, relating some of their experiences within in- dustry, and takes numerous field trips which in the course of two years include most of the major industrial plants in the Philadelphia area. Guided by Mr. Iames E. Dougherty '50, the club moderator, the I.R.C. has participated in regional and national International Rela- tions Clubs, N.F.C.C.S., and United Nations Council events. Locally the club has presented a lecture series highlighted by a Symposium on Current Affairs. The theme of the symposium was Pope Pius XII and the reconstruction of the Social Order. The noted speakers at this affair were the Very Rev. Edward G. Iacklin, S.I., President of the College, Mr. Iohn L. Mul- loy, M.A., '36, Rev. Michael I. Each of these qualifications is carefully defined, analyzed and inter- preted by the chapter members and the members of the faculty in choosing seven select members of the Senior class who will be looked upon as the ultimate of Iesuit education. However these men are not satisfied to remain as men to be looked upon, rather they work actively to further the interests of the College. The following are this year's members of Alpha Sigma Nu: Milton M. Connell, President, Filindo P. DiGiacobbe, Daniel T. McWilliams, Iames R. Cavanaugh, Ioseph P. Mar- tin, Vice-President, Anthony I. Papa- neri, Secretary, and Martin I. Meade. 1 I I agma pc Scgma In May of l95l Dr. Meriam B. Trytten and Dr. Marsh W. White, the National President and Secretary re- spectively of Sigma Pi Sigma came to St. Ioseph's College to install a chapter of this famous National Physics honor society. Before St. Ioseph's could be accepted as a chapter of the honor society, the national officers weighed carefully the qualifications of the col- lege and conducted an investigation of the facilities and scholastic standards of the Physics department. The society has grown from six charter members to the present ten active members. Ioseph P. Martin, President, Ioseph B. Howe, Vice-Presi- dent and Iohn I. Costello, Secretary, comprise the senior membership of this organization. One of the most recent of the scien- tific societies on campus, the Clarence E. Schaffrey Biology Club, ranks high with its brother organizations in acti- vity. Having established its own news- paper, The Psyche, which recounts the highlights of meetings, the club has gone on into research on ways and means of getting more and more of their members into the various Medical schools. Under the moderation of Rev. Mark H. Bauer, S.I. the club has had meetings, field trips, lectures, and dis- cussion groups which weekly invade the lower expanse of the main building with everything from live crayfish and chicks to millions of their favorite fruit flies. T 2 u '4 ' O Another chapter of a national or- ganization is the Saint Ioseph's Chap- ter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society. A.C.S. is a shortened form of their impressive title but this does not take away from their impressive work. Through their regularly scheduled meetings these chemists sponsor research, interest in the scientific method, improvements in chemical standards, and even some social activity. The year the organiza- tion has been recognized and respected in the region with a presentation by seniors Daniel I. Brogan and William F. Minder at a regional meeting of the A.C.S. Besides this the club has also sponsored field trips and guest lectur- ers. The officers for this year included seniors Frederick W. Pairent, President and Daniel I. Brogan, Secretary-Treas- urer. P fgdddddty Oldest of the Cultural Societies and about the age of the college Senior is the Philosophical Academy. Founded in 1930 by Rev. Walter G. Summers, S.I. this organization of philosopher's phil- osophers carries on its tradition of dis- cussing the world's great thinkers. Under the keen but mild direction of Fr. Frederick Renz, SJ. the members often find themselves on topics which have stumped the world for many years. Although this group does not claim to find the solutions to all the problems presented, they do claim a clear viewing for each problem in the light of clear scholastic philosophy. 6a ?40549M754?
