Conse- quently in the future when we open this yearbook, the happy days spent will be relived. Let us hope that this record of our deeds does not represent mere pages, words, and pictures, but the things we have done and desire to remember. Among these events we wish to recollect are: The death of our beloved Monsignor Keyes, the assignment of Father Connor to our parish, the new members of the faculty in our last year, the triumphs and losses of our teams, the acquisition of football, and all the other details whether large or small which keep Saint Ioseph's close to our hearts. We also wish to recall the education we received here which has satisfied our mental, physical, and spiritual needs. This education in the doctrines of Catholicism is of tremendous necessity in these times when Communism is running rampant throughout the world. Therefore, we wish to thank our pastor, our priests, principal, and the faculty both past and present for the many things they have done in order to 'prepare us to face the world with faith and confidence. FUHEWUHD UUH LADY UP F!-XTIM!-X UEDIEATIU A MOST FITTING AND OUTSTANDING personage has been chosen for this year's dedication. She is one whose assistance we will need through- out our lives-in times of both joy and sorrow. Especially now, when the Godless creed of Communism has penetrated even the democracy of our own country, do we need her help. She is the only one who can safely steer us through the difficult waters of these times. Here at St. Ioseph's her doctrine has been spread, and as a result all have become acquainted with her teaching and now revere her with the highest esteem. We are grateful for her past care and solicitude, and hope she will continue this needed assistance in the years to' come. She is the only one who is holding back the hand of God from striking with. wrath against the injustices that have been heaped upon Him by an ungrateful world. 1 Thus, as we dedicate this 1950 edition of the Iosepal, we wish to honor the most powerful Mediatrix between heaven and earth-under the title of Our Lady of Fatima. You have been taught that religion alone will enable you to hold yourselves firm through life in the pathway of duty, how- ever fierce the storms you may encounter. From a worldly point of view, too, you have every reason to be proud of your school. From its portals have gone forth students who have brought honor to Saint Ioseph's School and it is my fond hope that you, also may do the same. That you, by leading good and useful lives may bring the blessing of God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost upon you is the fervent prayer of your Pastor. FATHER IOSEPH CONNOR REVEREND IQSEPH P. Other feasts of the church give us a joy that cannot be measured in this life, but the one feast that comes closest to giving us a sense of nearness to God, is the Feast of Saint Ioseph. It is lovely because of its threefold significance, as patron of the universal church, patron of our own school and our Pastor, Father Connor's feast. Ai! ffl, sk , I X aff- M l Q I X X X 1 X 61. The gain to the Oarmelite Order was our loss, but we know Miriam, who was voted the most popular Sophomore girl just before leaving, has found the greatest peace ot mind by answering God's oft-repeated call for her to enter the religious lite. Hidden beneath all her exterior popularity-for she was an outstanding cheerleader as well as one of the best liked in the school-Miriarn's thoughts must have been much deeper than even her closest friends imagined. For without even the slightest warning on February 2, 1948, Miriam departed for St. Patricks Home in the Bronx. Here she has been since, transferring only once to Avilla on the Hudson in Germantown, Where she is now preparing to take her vows. May Miriam's prayers and sacrifices accompany her classmates in all their endeavors throughout the years to come. Last Will and Testament o We, the class of lune 1950, being of sound mind and possessing our faculties, do hereby leave this as our last will and testament: To our Reverend Pastor, Father Connor, and his associate priests: Our sincere gratitude for their guidance and religious instruction. To Sister Evarista: The deepest respect and admiration, not only from the Seniors, but from all the students in our school. To Sister Marie Augusta: ' ' ' A new bus line that will have all the students here on time, and a radar machine to detect cutters. To Sister Ioseph Marie and the Chemistry Lab: An air-conditioning system to make that part of the building sweet and fresh, and avoid future disturbances in the library. To Sister Miriam Francis: A fresh batch of stenographers and the largest dictionary available so the girls will have no trouble spelling certain words. To Sister Cecilia Francis: A school without any sports activities, and a bookkeeping class that knows its debits and credits. To Mr. Hammock: A specially constructed desk and chair to enable him to sit still and a p-latform for him to pace up and down on when he is uncomfortable. To Sister Loretta Marie: A new supply 'of history workbooks, each with different questions and written in languages which only their individual owners can read. To Sister Bertille: A modernistic library, complete with the newest books and magazines, and two extra-large silence posters. To Sister Christopher: The latest thing in joke books and a life-long subscription to a currently popular French newspaper. To Sister Mary Augustine: A special absentee chart that will enable her to know at a single glance how many are absent and an out-door class so she can have plenty of fresh air. To Miss Sheehan: Nineties for all her Spanish students, and Seniors who can speak more Spanish than just Yo hablo espanol. To Mr. Monaco: . A senior girls' gym class minus wagging tongues: and a highly suc- cessful l950 football season. 'I'o the Iuniors: Two completely up-to-date classrooms, modernized to fit all their needs: and a prayer for success in their last year in school. To the Sophomores: The hope that a year of maturity will have impressed them as it impressed us. To the Freshmen: The hope that they will have as much happiness, traveling through their remaining years in school, as we have had. . This year's display which consisted of Catholic newspapers, periodicals, pamphlets and books, was most inspiring and surpassed all previous exhibits. To keep the mind and heart in unison with the thoughts and feelings of the Church is the desired effect of the Press Exhibit. With the hope to acquaint the parents as well as the students with as much and as varied reading Page Forty-two material under Catholic auspices as possible in order to of-fset the secular press so bent on filling the minds of young and old alike with harmful information, students were encouraged to take sample copies of the many and varied magazines home for the purpose of spreading Catholic periodicals. We hope that this affair fulfilled its two-fold aim: to create a desire to read good, correct informative literature and to introduce a Catholic paper in every home. -fs I fax iff' E35 6 X x K . HAVlNG SUCH TEAMS as Emerson, Union Hill, Demarest and Trenton Catholic on their schedule, the Blue 'Iays really had their work cut out for them. Under their new coach Sam Monaco, they started the season oft smoothly by beating a highly favored St. Mary's of Rutherford, 20-13. However, St. Ioseph's lost its second start by taking a 22-12 beating from lmmaculate Conception of Montclair and dropped a real close one to Demarest, when with less than halt a minute to play, a fourth down despera- tion pass by Demarest nipped St. Ioseph's by a score of 12-6. This certainly was no pre- view ot what was to come. ln the next two brilliantly p-layed games our team held Emerson to only 20 points, and upset Union Hill by a startling score of 7-6. Finishing out the season by beating Bayonne Tech 25-03 Queen of Peace 20-195 St. Michaels 26-7 and losing to Trenton Catholic 40-6, the Blue Iays ended the season with a respect- able 5-4 record. All through the season our boys went into these games with the spirit to win and never let down till the final Whistle was blown. But still during this rough schedule, St. Ioe's matched teams more powerful than their own even to the end, and it this is the proof of what they can do now - - - well, all we can say is HUDSON COUNTY LOOK OUT ! For the real ability of our team came into play during the tournament games from which we emerged victorious. As we reached the semi-finals after overpowering such teams as Immaculate Conception, Saint Michaels, Holy Family, to play a highly touted Our Lady of the Valley: St. Ioseph's astounded our opponents and came through with a smashing 48-43 victory that made the county, and even the state, take notice. Now estab- lished as Northern New lersey Sectional Champs, our boys had a real task before them to meet the favored Red Bank Catholic High School for the championship game. But our team came through in a maze of glory. Led by Page Fifty-eight Basketball their capable coach, Carl Harden, the Blue lays matched Red Bank man for man in the first half, the score being 23-21 in favor of Red Bank. In the second half it was altogether different: for the brilliancy St. loseph's had shown throughout the season was even more noticeable now, and the Saints defeated Red Bank Catholic 48-39. This victory was not a surprise to manyg for the Blue lays had held such powerhouses as Emerson, Union Hill, and Saint Peter's to as low as three and several times one point. Saint Uoseph's finished the season with a neat I5-I0 record. In this high- light of victory we would like to extend our congratulations to: Coach Carl Harden-may he keep up his splendid work: all the mem- bers of the Varsity who made team play their sloganAwe're proud of you.
