And the Winners are a Best Dance Performance: Erin Holloway Best Lip Sync: ' ' Summer Lovin ' Best Musical Performance Eduardo Wolf — Playing Right Field Just Can ' t Explain why those voices were so beautiful. But the strong back-up of Chris Sloan, Laura Matthias, and Kelly Wagner made Gus Swanda sound that much better. Playing Right Field K r Who would put this darling vunerable [ace in right field? Eduardo |l Wolf ' s boyish charm sure won the hearts of the judges! Saturday summers when I was a kid, We ' d run to the schoolyard and here ' s what we did. We ' d choose up the captians, we ' d pick out the teams, It was always a measure of my self-esteem. ' Cuz the fastest, the strongest played short stop and first, The last ones they picked were the worst. I never needed to ask, it was sealed, I just took up my place in right field. Playing right field, it ' s easy you know. You can be awkward and you can be slow. That ' s why t ' m here in right field. Just watching the dandelions grow. Playing right field can be lonely and dull. Little leagues never have lefties that pull. I ' d dream of the day they ' d hit one my way. They never did, but still I would pray. That I ' d makee a fantastic catch on the run And not lose that ball in the sun. Then I ' d awake from this long reverie. And pray that the ball never came out to me. ' Chorus It ' s late in the evening, the game ' s draggin ' on. They ' re strikes on the batter, some runners are on. I don ' t know the inning, I ' ve forgotten the score. The whole team is cheering, and I don ' t know what for. Then suddenly everyone ' s looking at me. My mind has been wandering, what could it be? They point to the sky and I look up above. And a baseball falls into my glove. Playing right field, it ' s important, you know. Ya gotta know how to catch, Ya gotta know how to throw. That ' s why I ' m here in right field. Just watching the dandelions grow. MiniMag 29

Tkri UoH AUt What exactly is New Wave? For something like music which is so impor- tant in the life of the average teenager, this term remains pretty nebulous. In the minds of most students, 1988 is the year when pop music is no longer cool, the year of new revolutionary mu- sic. There is a new awareness sweeping the average teenage mentality of what music says, what music means to each teenager. There is a new individuality, and each person is developing his own angle of music. For some people like sophomore Todd Rozycki, New Wave is anything that ' s new and progressive and not that popu- lar. People tend to think that once something is appreciated by masses of teenagers, it ' s no longer New Wave. After polling numerous music lovers, commonly mentioned New Wave groups included bands like The Cure, N ew Order, LI2, The Smiths, and The Talking Heads. It all depends on your definition of ' New Wave ' , said junior Adrienne Wal- lace. Senior Coley Mitchell said, It ' s mu- sic that has a deeper meaning, not like ' popular music ' which is often shallow and predesigned for radio success. Katie Rumely said that for her, New Wave is the liason between popular music and punk rock. This new type of music is certainly con- fusing, and difficult to pinpoint. But whether New Wave consists of a certain sound and a certain style, or if it ' s just some catch-all phrase for songs that don ' t fit anywhere else, it still remains the main music craze that is sweeping St. Joe in 1988.
