Have You Heard the News? The 1988 spring musical Good News proved once again that St. Joe is blessed with immense talent. Gooc News , a fast- paced jazzy comedy, provided great enter- tainment for all who attended. The story is set in the late 1920 s at Tait College, where the big football game and complicat- ed love relationships create a hysterical plot that kept audiences captivated and amused from start to finish. The story begins a few days before Tait ' s big football game of the season. Tom Marlow, the star football player, however, is failing astronomy. Without a passing grade on the exam, he cannot play in the game. His girlfriend, Patricia (played by Katy Blakey) can ' t tutor him, and instead persuades her cousin, Connie (played by Rachelle Anthes) to be his tutor instead. However, Connie and Tom fall in love instead. Meanwhile, many other relationships are going on, including that between Bobby Randall (Chris Murphy), Babe (Lisa Domin- ello) and Beef (Pete Horvath). Of course, through some miracle, Tom Marlow passes that astronomy exam, and Tait wins the game through an amazing pass from Tom to Bobby in the last minute. Lynn Timmons, a newcomer to St. Joe, directed the progress of the musical and developed the talents of the cast. Renaita Duda, also a newcomer, choreographed some of the best dancing ever by a St Joe cast. Chris Murphy (Bobby) said, This sh ' was a perfect cap to my four years involvement in theatre. Everyone in th cast followed that golden rule in hi school theatre: we all had fun. Ed Wolf (Prof. Kenyon) said, The title of the musical tells it all. Not only was I happy with the performances and the audi- ence ' s responses to them, but a real sense of family grew amid the cast. And with Matt Hunckler as the musical director and Br. Chris Dreyer designing sets, how could the results of the show be anything but Good News? Head over heels. Chris Murphy and Lis. their love for one another.
