We Come Of Age As freshmen, we enter St. Joe won- dering what the year holds in store for us. What will our classes be like? Will we make new friends? What clubs should we join? The year passes. Sometimes we are surprisedi some- times we are discouraged. But we find our place at St. Joe and grow accus- tomed to the life here. We become a part of St. Joe. Yet every year, we return to school filled with anticipations and questions. Will we renew old acquaintances? Will we find new friendships too? Will we have the same teachers? Will our teams win tournaments and champion- ships? Will the school be changed any? There are so many things to be accom- plished and so many decisions to be made. We will learn to accept chal- lenges and cope with difficulties. We will work to make our dreams become realities. As seniors, we prepare to leave St. Joe. It has not been easy, but we have managed to meet the demands placed upon us and still enjoy our years in high school. We have become proud of ourselves, our class, and our school. We have weathered the years and we are pleased with the results. We have arrived and we will not turn back. For certainly, we have come of age.

Beginnings This past year was one of beginnings and welcome changes. On the local scene. Democrat bill Richardson was chosen as the new sheriff after Ralph DeMeyer was con- victed of extortion. The newly-opened Marriott Hotel downtown was a welcome change from the big hole on which it was built. This has made several hundred new jobs available to South Benders, and is a good beginning to the eventual restoration of downtown. Notre Dame football also got a new leader this fall. Gerry Faust became the new Irish head coach, replacing Dan Devine. His team ' s record was 5-6, Notre Dame ' s worst in many years. But when he came, he brought with him the enthusiasm that had been missing previously. Nationally, the space shuttle was a great feat for the U.S. We became the first country to launch something into space, to have it return, to be used again. wt «l 1 UdMi ' -JijlJI IBBl W ' -, Top; Ronald Reagan began his term with a lot of promises, and many of these were carried out in his drastic changes in this country ' s economic policies.
