During the 1981-82 school year, sev- eral St. Joe organizations donated their time and effort to serving the St. Joe community and other causes. The members of the National Honor Soci- ety provided tutoring to fellow stu- dents. The volunteers worked through- out the year offering tutoring each day of the week, all day long, in every subject from Spanish to Calculus. The NHS volunteers found the service re- warding, and agreed that it was a good way to share their talents. At the end of the year, the St. Joe NHS conducted a forum for area chapters to meet and discuss methods and goals. The Ex- change Day brought representatives from several high school and was a big success. Hopefully, it is the start of a new tradition. Another St. Joe group committed to service has been the Hunger Abolition Corps. Moderated by Mr. Matt Reyn- olds and led by president Mary Kay O ' Connell, the group organized the Thanksgiving Food Drive, which in- cluded a hunger awareness program, the Community Day of Fast, and a col- lection of money and food donations used to feed thirty needy families in South Bend. The group received over 1,000 in total contributions, which was used to buy fresh food for the families, and the remainder was donated to an overseas charity. A third group serving the communi- ty has been Mrs. Ciretta Coty ' s Envi- ronmental Problems classes. In addi- tion to classroom studies, the students planted trees on school grounds, orga- nized a trash pick-up program, and raised money through bake sales to save American eagles. In conjunction with these projects, the students used p. a. announcements and amusing quiz- zes to increase public awareness and knowledge of the problem of endan- gered species. Their hard work paid off, as they were recognized by the Indiana Wildlife Federation for their efforts. Another, less visible, group of stu- dents directed their efforts to plan- ning and presenting a program in hon- or of Black History Month. Speakers from the community were brought in to address students on the issue of black significance in society. The pro- gram was well received and informa- tive to all.
