t k SCHOOL LIFE 8 ATHLETICS 40 ALBUM 78 ORGANIZATIONS 138 SAINT JOSEPH ' S HIGH SCHOOL. SOUTH BEND, IND. We Come Of Age As freshmen, we enter St. Joe won- dering what the year holds in store for us. What will our classes be like? Will we make new friends? What clubs should we join? The year passes. Sometimes we are surprisedi some- times we are discouraged. But we find our place at St. Joe and grow accus- tomed to the life here. We become a part of St. Joe. Yet every year, we return to school filled with anticipations and questions. Will we renew old acquaintances? Will we find new friendships too? Will we have the same teachers? Will our teams win tournaments and champion- ships? Will the school be changed any? There are so many things to be accom- plished and so many decisions to be made. We will learn to accept chal- lenges and cope with difficulties. We will work to make our dreams become realities. As seniors, we prepare to leave St. Joe. It has not been easy, but we have managed to meet the demands placed upon us and still enjoy our years in high school. We have become proud of ourselves, our class, and our school. We have weathered the years and we are pleased with the results. We have arrived and we will not turn back. For certainly, we have come of age. Beginnings This past year was one of beginnings and welcome changes. On the local scene. Democrat bill Richardson was chosen as the new sheriff after Ralph DeMeyer was con- victed of extortion. The newly-opened Marriott Hotel downtown was a welcome change from the big hole on which it was built. This has made several hundred new jobs available to South Benders, and is a good beginning to the eventual restoration of downtown. Notre Dame football also got a new leader this fall. Gerry Faust became the new Irish head coach, replacing Dan Devine. His team ' s record was 5-6, Notre Dame ' s worst in many years. But when he came, he brought with him the enthusiasm that had been missing previously. Nationally, the space shuttle was a great feat for the U.S. We became the first country to launch something into space, to have it return, to be used again. wt «l 1 UdMi ' -JijlJI IBBl W ' -, Top; Ronald Reagan began his term with a lot of promises, and many of these were carried out in his drastic changes in this country ' s economic policies. Left: The new downtown Marriott is expected to be a great asset to South Bend. Right: County sheriff Ralph DeMeyer was con- victed of extortion and replaced by William Richardson. Top: The space shuttle Columbia was a great success and instilled a great amount of pride in the American people. Left: Even though his first year as head coach was not as successful as he ' d have liked. Gerry Faust rarely lost his smile. Right: It took a year, but the WNDU radio and television stations finally were able to move into their new building. As in the past year, St. Joe has been an ever changing community. Not only has there been a change in teachers, but also in the actual building. Some of these changes are the remodeling of the cafeteria, which includes a new floor and ceiling, the addition of more computers, and the remodelling of the newspaper office. Among these changes, however, some of the major differences are the addition of the bookstore which is managed by Mr. Larry Shead, the re-location of the business office, and to the teachers ' pleasure, the addition of a new teach- ers ' lounge. The bookstore is a change which is accepted well by the students because it gives them the opportunity to buy school essentials throughout the year. The theology department has been through many changes this year. The chapel has a new minister and teacher. Father Darryl Rybicki. Father Rybicki has also seen many changes since his arrival at St.Joe. For example, the re- arrangement of the chapel pews which allows more students to attend masses. Also, there has been a lot of effort to make the all school masses more beautiful with the addition of new furniture and decorations. Mrs. Tracy Sandman, as of this year, also has been appointed the position of or- ganizing the retreats. As a general rule, most changes re- quire readjustments, however, the stu- dents and faculty have found these re- cent changes at St. Joe make school life more convenient and enjoyable. Top. It was held at the Saint Mary ' s O ' Laughlin Auditorium on Oc- tober 22, 2i, and 25. Andrea Goulet, a talented freshman, played the leading role of Anne Frank. Otto Frank, Anne ' s father, was played by Mark Geissler, and Edith Frank, her mother, was played by Ann Walton. The other mem- bers of the cast included Katie Garvey, Tom Houk, Jay Lewis, Rebecca Goerner, Doug Graczyk, Sarah Brad- ley, and Dave Wallace. The tone of the play, unlike past years, was serious. It was chosen to bring to mind the tragic reality of the 1940 ' s. Another reason this serious play was chosen was due to the availability of funds. Top — Mark Geissler as Mr. Frank explains lo Anne the meaning of her new diary, which was a gift. FAIL PLAY II Q FOOTBALL TRIBUTE Playoff Hopes Come Of Age Despite being denied participation in the state playoffs after two con- secutive 10-0 seasons, the 1981 football team fought its way to a third unde- feated season, a 31-game winning streak and, most importantly, a playoff berth. Sparked on by an enormous and en- thusiastic crowd. Coach Phil Teegar- den ' s Indians battled Fort Wayne Snider. Visions of a state champion- ship ended in overtime, however, as the Indians bowed to a fine Snider team, 16-13. As expected, several members of the team received high recognition for their individual talents and achieve- ments. The Associated Press All-State team included nine St. Joe players. First Team selections were Mario Zap- pia, Dennis Goralski, and James Reinen John Glon earned Second Team hon- orsi Dale Scott, Rich Was, and Jeff Monhaut were Third Team selections) and Mike Carmola and Tom Klimek re- ceived Honorable Mention. The Indi- ans were even recognized nationally as Jim Reiner and Dale Scott, The Touchdown Twins, were featured in Sports Illustrated Magazine. This is a tribute, then, to all those involved with the 1981-82 football team, who brought so much pride to St. Joe. Top: The St. Joe defense swallows up the ballcar- rier for Ft. Wayne Snider. FOOTBALL TRIBUTE 13 Show Your Spirit! Monday one saw the familiar faces of Radar and Klinger roaming the halls. M A S H was the theme and the sen- ior army was determined to win the spirit war. Tuesday one would think the juniors had gone back to the cra- dle. The theme was Beating Knights is like taking candy from a baby, and their hall was sweet. The sophomore movie buffs said Knights would be Gone with the Wind. The freshmen said the Knights were gambling with their lives with a 1920 ' s theme. True spirit was shown as a different team was honored each day. All that was needed was a win over Marian to make the 1981 Football Homecoming perfect. The football team more than accomplished this task overpowering the Knights 31-0. The first half was a time of suspense for the crowd and the court. The high point of the half-time activities was the presentation of the student-elect- ed court, which included Terri Austin and Jay Lewis, Becky DeLeu and George Carlin. Jody Megyese and T.J. Ahearn. Amy Oswald and W.R. Mack, Trice Rose and Kelly Coleman, Monica Walters and Mark Geissler, and Chris Witucki and Kevin Gibbons. The sus- pense finally ended when Becky DeLeu and Kelly Coleman were announced queen and king. FOOTBALL HOMECOMING I? Campus Ministry Alive And Well At St, Joe St. Joseph ' s is a unique high school because support is given not only to the intellectual and physical lives of the students, but also to their spiritual and religious lives. This support at St. Joe is directed through the Campus Ministry Department, which is respon- sible for the school masses and over- night retreats. In the 1981-82 school year they have been very successful in fulfilling the spiritual needs of the stu- dents. This success is evident in the large participation of the student body in the programs available to them. Working in union with Campus Minis- try, students are involved in the Litur- gical Planning Committee, the Liturgi- cal Music Group, the Retreat Planning Committee, and as Eucharistic minis- ters, lectors, and acolytes for masses. One of the highlights this year was Bishop McManus ' visit on the feast of St. Joseph. The bishop spent the day visiting with students and faculty. X) STUDENTS IN SERVICE During the 1981-82 school year, sev- eral St. Joe organizations donated their time and effort to serving the St. Joe community and other causes. The members of the National Honor Soci- ety provided tutoring to fellow stu- dents. The volunteers worked through- out the year offering tutoring each day of the week, all day long, in every subject from Spanish to Calculus. The NHS volunteers found the service re- warding, and agreed that it was a good way to share their talents. At the end of the year, the St. Joe NHS conducted a forum for area chapters to meet and discuss methods and goals. The Ex- change Day brought representatives from several high school and was a big success. Hopefully, it is the start of a new tradition. Another St. Joe group committed to service has been the Hunger Abolition Corps. Moderated by Mr. Matt Reyn- olds and led by president Mary Kay O ' Connell, the group organized the Thanksgiving Food Drive, which in- cluded a hunger awareness program, the Community Day of Fast, and a col- lection of money and food donations used to feed thirty needy families in South Bend. The group received over 1,000 in total contributions, which was used to buy fresh food for the families, and the remainder was donated to an overseas charity. A third group serving the communi- ty has been Mrs. Ciretta Coty ' s Envi- ronmental Problems classes. In addi- tion to classroom studies, the students planted trees on school grounds, orga- nized a trash pick-up program, and raised money through bake sales to save American eagles. In conjunction with these projects, the students used p. a. announcements and amusing quiz- zes to increase public awareness and knowledge of the problem of endan- gered species. Their hard work paid off, as they were recognized by the Indiana Wildlife Federation for their efforts. Another, less visible, group of stu- dents directed their efforts to plan- ning and presenting a program in hon- or of Black History Month. Speakers from the community were brought in to address students on the issue of black significance in society. The pro- gram was well received and informa- tive to all. STUDENTS IN SERVICE 21 Top — Lloyd Ketchum works as a lifeguard dur- ing the summer. Below — Grocery bagger Brian Dougherty flashes his courteous smile to Mar- tin ' s customers. Many St. Joe students excel not only in their academics, but also in our community. After the 3:05 bell, we are all dispersed, heading out into the di- rections our own lives take us. For some, the final bell of the school day means only the beginning of the work day. They are the ones who, realizing present economic difficulties, or just needing spending money, have found themselves after-school jobs. Often- times one is pleasently surprised, when stopping by a grocery store or fast-food place, to find a fellow class- mate smiling at them from behind the counter. For other St. Joe students, free time means relaxation, and a time to pursue one ' s own special interests. And our St. Joe family is one containing a great deal of variation in interest and tal- ents. We have professional singers, ballerinas, competing swimmers, wa- ter-skiers, life guards, disc jockeys, soccer players, actors, actresses, art- ists, and assorted musicians. Still others have given of themselves and their time in service to those less fortunate. Many St. Joe students have been volunteers at the Children ' s Hos- pital, CANCO, Camp Millhouse, and hospitals, to name just a few places. All of these students have truly put forth great effort in making our South Bend community a much more happy and spirit-filled place. Al- though the game was lost, the night was hardly a loss for the new home- coming king and queen. Traditionally, the homecoming queen and king are announced during the half-time of the game after being elected by the stu- dent body the previous day. Sue Mul- len was elected to be the year ' s bas- ketball homecoming queen and Jim Reiner was elected king. Members of the court were Angel Pimpanella, Mi- chelle Lichtenberg, Ann Leader, Julie Stephenson, Monica Wynen, Mike Car- mola. Rich Was, Brian McMahon, Den- nis Goralski, and David Petsche. As in the past, the election of the court, the queen, and king was difficult for the students, but the game and the elec- tions proved to be a fun time for all — especially the new king and queen. BASKETBALL HOMECOMING 25 S3MIA ♦  This year St. Joseph High School presented a musical review, Side by Side which included four skits linked together by song and dance numbers. Directed by Barbara Jemielity, the play was presented on March 5, 6, and 7 of 1982. Katie Garvey, as the Fairy Godmoth- er helped bring the scenes together and explained them to the audience. The Playmate scene which was first, illustrated life as a child. In Love is a Fallacy John Blakey, Justin Geissler, and Ellie Shook showed what it is like to be a teenager. In The Way Out Cinderella Tom Houk was the king, Doug Graczyk played the prince, and Colleen Goddard became the modern day Cinderella. The last scetch was Second Honeymoon, which starred Ann Walsh and Mark Geissler. Side By Side Tops The cast of Side by Side sings Sunrise. Sunset. SPRING PLAY 27 For The Fun Of It! The intramurals sports program pro- vided a lot of good competition and fun this year for all who participated. The program inc luded football, basket- ball, volleyball, bowling, and softball leagues. Almost as important as actual performance seemed to be the team nicknames. Participants displayed a lot of creativity with such names as The Plastic Surgeons (who specialize in face jobs ), Blood Sweat and Beers, Bubba ' s Warriors, and Dukes of Earl, who were the basket- ball champs. With the help and hard work of fac- ulty moderator Mr. Tom Gerencher and student director Tom Seitz the program turned out to be a big suc- cess. It provided an opportunity of non-varsity competition for those who participated, and a lot of entertain- ment for the crowds who showed up to cheer their favorite teams. INTRAMURALS 29 Roughing It Year after year dozens of St. Joe students have gotten together in the summer to make a pilgrimage to the Quetico National Forest Reserve in Canada. What is it that compels these ordinary city kids to leave their homes and venture into the vast unknown? It is not the eighty poung backpacks, the long muddy portages, or the wet sleep- ing bags. What the Canadian wilder- ness trip does offer the students is a challenge. The campers prove that they can live without any modern con- veniences. They can survive the most primitive conditions. They can over- come rain and heat and dried chili con carne dinners. The campers spend their days canoeing, swimming, sun- bathing, or cooking out. Life is simple in the Quetico and the students enjoy the freedom and beauty of the out- doors. Most people wouldn ' t want to spend too long in the Quetico, but it is an adventure not soon forgotten and a vacation experience rarely duplicated. Tuesday, May II, Faculty, Family, and Friends gathered in the school gym to honor students who achieved levels of academic ex- cellence. Students received recogni- tion for competitions, scholarships, and community awards as well. Special recognition was given to James Lewis, who received the Principal ' s Award, Margaret Hill, who gave her salutatory address on Honors night, and Joseph Fink, the Valedictorian of the class of 1982. Not many records for temperature and snowfall were set, but the winter was special because the cold and snow lasted for so long. During January and February it seemed that every weekend was ruined by heavy snowfall and storms. But this was good news for skiers and other winter sport lovers, and even for St. Joe students, because it usually meant no school on Monday. After some 150 couples arrived in their forma! attire, they were able to enjoy an evening of danc- ing with music provided by Moon- light. The dance floor was the most crowded when the band played The Best of Times, the theme for the Prom. Any observer could surely tell by the faces of the couples that a night such as prom is indeed the best of times. The romance and festivities for the evening provided an excellent end- ing to the school year for all who at- tended. Top Right: Peter Melsa 6 date take a breather to watch the other couples dance. This disease is noticed by the incredi- ble yearning to be out of doors, prefer- ably on the beach, and an intense apa- thy toward books, tests, and term pa- pers. Seniors of past classes gave in to this yearning by heading to the beach on Senior Skip Day, but this year ' s day on the beach had a different twist. Seniors were warned that a skip day might extend the length of time that they would have to attend classes. Be- cause of this conflict, seniors and the faculty worked for several hours on an alternative to skip day. The alternative day was to be called Senior Unity Day and its purpose was to unite the senior class before graduation. The day ' s schedule consisted of a mass, time for refreshment, and then time on the beach. Seniors and faculty members found that this compromise proved to be a great success. Senioritis takes its greatest toll on the last day of school. To celebrate their grand exit, many seniors loaded up the buses and headed to King ' s Is- land amusement park for a night of fun and action. Most of the seniors who did not go to King ' s Island found their way to the beaches for a sunf illed day of excitement. All of the seniors, but especially the members of the O.P.E.C. team, made sure that the class went out with a bang and that they would not soon be forgotten. Above right: Jean Kubsch withdraws from the crowd after her encounter with shaving cream. Right: The O.P.E.C. Team is all smiles during the last day of school. Below left: The main excite- ment of the beach during Unity Day was getting everybody (willing or unwilling) into the water. SENIORITIS 37 I Seniors Come Of Age On May 20 and May 21, the Class of ' 82 formally completed its education at St. Joe. The Baccalaureate Mass was held, according to tradition, at Sacred Heart Church. Bishop William McManus was present, as well as cler- gy from several area parishes. The sentimental mass was highlighted by the bishop ' s comments to the graduat- ing seniors. A strong sense of unity was felt throughout the class. The commencement exercise were held in the Notre Dame A.C.C. Mr. Rich DeVos, president of Amway Corpora- tion, spoke to the graduates, promot- ing American values and the system of free enterprise. Mr. DeVos was an en- tertaining speaker, and he inspired many with his positive outlook on the future. After his speech, Mr. DeVos received a plaque from the senior class in appreciation for his words. In the same tone, senior class president Jack Flock read a congratulatory letter from President Ronald Reagan. The tradi- tional valedictory address was given by Joe Fink. He both entertained the audience and instilled in the seniors a sense of unity as he recalled highlights of the years at St. Joe. And he remind- ed everyone that Faith can move a mountain, or a pink elephant, as the case may be. Finally, the graduates received their diplomas from Mr. Rou- sey and Mr. Edward Kalamaros, who was also recognized for his service as president of the Board of Education. And as the new alumni filed from the auditorium, they knew that they had come of age. Below left: Buddy Webster and Tony Willis wait outside before Baccalaureate. The work began with summer work-outs, but it paid off. From the opening game in mid-August, throughout the season, and up to the ultimate challenge of Ft. Wayne Snider, Coach Teegarden ' s Indians fought to win. In order for a team to be so successful, individual efforts must be united for a common goal. At the annual football banquet, many of these individuals were rewarded for their contributions. Rich Was and Tom Kli- mek were honored as Defensive Backs of the Year) Dennis Goralski and Jeff Monhaut as Linebackers of the Yearj Tom Kuspa as outstanding Defensive Lineman) Brian Wroblewski as Special Teams player of the Year) John Glon and Paul Brady as Offensive Lineman) Greg Grohowski and Mario Zappia as outstanding Receivers) and Dale Scott and James Reiner as Offensive Backs of the Year. James Reiner, who co-cap- tained the team with Rich Was, re- ceived the Kiwanis Award. Even with as many talented players as the Indians had, a team cannot suc- ceed without exceptional coaching. Coach Phil Teegarden supplied that excellence, earning recognition as the Metro Coach of the Year. Indians Earn Top right: Rich Was blocks from Tom Toppel during the Snider game. Changes in coaches mid-way through the season caused much confusion, with Mark Gyslink moving on to the Air Force. The team had a lot of close calls, losing three-sit matches by only one to both Marian and Clay. The team never gave up though, and proved to be worthy of the challenge of revenging its defeat to Clay three weeks later. The captains for the season were seniors Mike Abromowski and Mike Butler. Their final record at the end of the season was 7-8. Those who were honored by receiving awards were. Mike Abromowski, who received the most valuable player award, and Scott Ummel who was awarded as the team ' s most improved player. Above right — Co-Captains Mike Abromowski and Mike Butler. Anyone who has spent time at St. Joe knows that the Indian spirit is something special. Several different things are needed to have school spir- it: enthusiastic crowds, faculty, cheer- leaders, and teams that never stop fighting. And St. Joe has had its share of winning teams this year: Football went undefeated, golf and girls ' tennis won sectionals, soccer won the league championship, and hockey finished second in the state. And all the time, the St. Joe fans supported their teams. Above left: Jay Sieradzki. Rich Tull. and Jean Kubsch cheer the Indians. With- out their constant enthusiasm, pep as- semblies and spirit would be minimal. Our cheerleaders devote much of their time to the spirit of St. Joe stu- dents because they know how much support means to our athletes. And whether the battle is lost or won, the cheerleaders ' goal is to cheer them onWard. The cheerleaders ' moderator this year was Mrs. Lightcap. In all these things we overcome because of him who has loved us. Neither death, nor life, nor things present, nor things to come, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. ' fl.y ) AMERIKA: for all of you it means home, but for me as an exchange stu- dent it means adventure. Every day I find myself in new situations. My normal schedule at my school in Germany was 7:30a.m.-l2:35 p.m. It has not been easy to get used to the St. Joe schedule, but I have found so many nice friends who have made these school days seem shorter than they are. There are also so many interesting and creative activities here such as the fall play, fundraising for the prom, and homecoming week. The theology department organizes retreats, which are not part of the educational pro- gram in Germany. Another part of the school I enjoy is the athletic program. The cheer We are the IndiansI will always mean to me that I have become a part of this student body. The National Honor Society has be- come very active in the St. Joe com- munity. In addition to their student tu- toring and library assistance pro- grams, NHS sponsored an interschool NHS Exchange Day. Several students were from five area high schools to spend the day at St. Joe and discover how other schools, and their National Honor Societies work. This year the May induction was changed to December. And under moderator Mrs. Derwent, the member- ship grew to 68 members with the in- duction of eleven seniors and twenty juniors. We have attempted to put down in words and in pictures some thinigs that can- not be properly communicated that way the spirit that is St. Joe, and the overwhelming experience that is our high school years. These things must be lived in order to be understood. Twenty years from now, you will use this book as a means of looking back on the days of high school, that time of both joy and sorrow, that time of final- ly coming of age.
