The American educational system — what a mind-blow- ing disaster! Probably the worst thing about it is that it is so frustrating, so resistant to change. The primary goal of edu- cation should be to teach the student to learn for himself. Unfortunately, this goal is not reached very often. The stu- dent is rarely motivated enough to find new educational experiences on his own. If some student were motivated in this ideal way, he would be given the chance to explore whatever field he may have been interested in. This would be the ideal. This situation to a certain extent has existed here at St. Joseph ' s, but it is in the process of being reme- died. One of the first major steps towards offering the St. Joe community a more liberal education was taken this year. A Free School lecture series was organized and started. The philosophy behind this new program is basically that to offer people the opportunity to enhance their education and knowledge about real life would be a great thing to do. Those who were fortunate enough to have participated in the program generally feel that it was an invaluable exper- ience. We believe that this relatively small, but still out- of sight-program is one of the first steps in the continuous process of establishing St. Joseph ' s High School as the ex- ception to the average American High School. St. Joseph ' s is becoming an outstanding, exciting, pro- gressive, and Christian institution of liberal education. This trend could be easily reversed; if those who are in position of authority (i. e. , the students, the faculty, and the admin- istration) became intimidated, lose sight of their goals and ideals, and therefore became false to the philosophy of St. Joe ' s, this school would then be similar to the average American High School. It would, therefore, have no legiti- mate reason to exist. This would definitely be a devastating situation, so let us not lose our vision. Senior Class President Christopher Costello
