mm Fsculty R 9 Q I u HI-WAY 71 St. Josepli ' s HS. Vol. t lBBaHn« aiimiiijm Liiuim_uL]i i L  ' « Man is forever longing to grow. He looks for that which hardest to find; he spends his life in search, though time goes quickly by. Searching brings a new awareness, a sense of life on an infinite plane. Confidently, he embraces the world, and finally sees time ' s insignificance. As morning dawns, we are ready to begin, open to new know- ledge, experience and people. We reach out with new ideas to solve old problems, and in doing so, have taken the first step toward finding the answers. Band and Pom-pom are two of St. Joe ' s evolving or- ganizations. While they are inter- related, they main- tain their own identity. Mus- ical numbers, presented be- fore a football game and dur- ing halftime, exemplify their ability to work together. Drum Major Bill Lewis directed the band, and co- captains Rita Baran and Judy Moon led the Pom-pom Girls. f  % ? ' . l5|. HI-LITE A Positive Form Of Communication A learning experience which invol- ves the life of the student outside the normal confines of the school is the pro- ject dream of our newspaper staff. In approaching such subjects of deep con- cern, as the draft, with a sense of maturity and a seriousness of purpose, the newspaper has grown in its relev- ancy. A type of progression from a reflection of superficial fluff to a positive form of communication has taken place. This does not exclude the humorous side of the paper, but rather it serves as a balance between the two. , In the past, the newspaper was re- garded as a calendar of events, nothing more. Well, times have changed, and so must a spokesman for those times. ...•To InJuns Counffy .1  g ' S . • 1 i 4 : 8PIFIT WEEK ! n M 12 TALENT SHOW 23 nraBfieiittiiknuiiaMMk One had only to see this year ' s girl ' s intramurals to observe some of the most gruesome contests ever experienced in the history of our school. Probably the worst thing about it is that it is so frustrating, so resistant to change. The primary goal of edu- cation should be to teach the student to learn for himself. Unfortunately, this goal is not reached very often. The stu- dent is rarely motivated enough to find new educational experiences on his own. If some student were motivated in this ideal way, he would be given the chance to explore whatever field he may have been interested in. This would be the ideal. This situation to a certain extent has existed here at St. Joseph ' s, but it is in the process of being reme- died. One of the first major steps towards offering the St. Joe community a more liberal education was taken this year. A Free School lecture series was organized and started. The philosophy behind this new program is basically that to offer people the opportunity to enhance their education and knowledge about real life would be a great thing to do. Those who were fortunate enough to have participated in the program generally feel that it was an invaluable exper- ience. We believe that this relatively small, but still out- of sight-program is one of the first steps in the continuous process of establishing St. Joseph ' s High School as the ex- ception to the average American High School. St. Joseph ' s is becoming an outstanding, exciting, pro- gressive, and Christian institution of liberal education. This trend could be easily reversed; if those who are in position of authority (i. e. , the students, the faculty, and the admin- istration) became intimidated, lose sight of their goals and ideals, and therefore became false to the philosophy of St. Joe ' s, this school would then be similar to the average American High School. It would, therefore, have no legiti- mate reason to exist. This would definitely be a devastating situation, so let us not lose our vision. Senior Class President Christopher Costello I am back in the Philippines now and just thinking. . . I remember on the first day of school I had boys as class- mates. Boys and girls are usually separated in tlie Philippines. No uniforms either! I could wear anything I wanted, espec- ially pants. The people were friendly and enthusiastic about my country. ' Where are the Philippines? Are they still a colony of the United States? ' ' What are your impressions of the U. S. ? ' I ' d always find myself answering repeatedly that tiie Philippines are a group of 1, 107 islands in South-east Asia, south of Viet-Nam; that they are not owned by the U. S. , but that had received their independence in 1946. I told my American friends that life in my country was somewhat similar; that we didn ' t live in tree houses any more; we had houses, telephones, phonographs; that we burped and fell in love as one did in the U. S. Dating customs, yes, were dif- ferent in the Philippines-- girls must always have chaperones. Dances and parties are different also. Before I came, I had bad impression of the U. S. , especially the people, but my family, school and people were just nice to me; as a matter of fact, they ' re great. I am glad that they were interested for me to make my country- known to them. But it ' s also depressing that people from tlie other side of the globe didn ' t even know that the Philippines existed. . . I really had so much fun sta ang in your country, espec- ially playing in the snow. It was the first time that I had seen snow, and at first I liked it. Afterwards-- I hated it! It was just too cold. . . I do miss everyone and everything in the United States. Good luck to all of you. . . Maria Luz Sarmiento, Foreign Exchange Student P. S. By taking an objective view of the total pic- ture, one cannot help but point out some of the specifics which made the season great. Coach Tee- garden, who has the rare quality of making gentle- manliness a fighting word, also has that unique gift of instilling this in his team. Sophomore Mike McCray, who emerged as a darkhorse quarterback, led the team in some of the season ' s most success- ful plays. The team ' s most notable quality was each indi- vidual ' s sense of recognizing the other ' s strength. At one time girls were not permitted to participate in sports activities sponsored by the school. Whether it is due to the youth re- volution, Women ' s Lib, or an unknown force, the general attitude changed. It began with a Powderpuff Derby, and has expanded to in- clude a number of other sports. Generating the newest competitive spirit, volleyball has begun its career with a winning season, unequaled by any other team at St. Joe. Regular season play ended in a 7-2 mark, and a second-place tourney finish increased it to 11-4. It would be difficult to typi- fy this year ' s basketball team with normal sportsman vocab- ulary; the team members as individuals demonstrated varied talents out on the court. In seai-ching for that common denominator, which has set apart this year ' s team from the others, the one factor most talked about is discipline. The term itself has acquired a pop- ular meaning. In spite of physical limita- tions, the Indians went on a long winning streak. It was broken only by Adams ' Eagles during the last game of the Holiday Tourney- - by a mere two- point difference. The team then began climbing in the state ratings to fourth place. Adding glory to this was John Laskow- ski, who through his brilliant career broke the all-city scor- ing record. 70 Mike Isban, John Sequin, Tom Abemathy and Joe Kuzmitz were the varsity squad for this year ' s golf team. An overall record of 23-10, a conference mark of 7-3, and a school low of 69 by Tom Abemathy represent the past season. B-TEAM GOLFERS: John Wade, Robert Johnson, Tom Fluff, John Summers, Glenn Molnar, Mike Klosinski, Bob Kuminecz, Greg Recker, Jim Donlan, Alan Rutkowski. A 16 inning marathon that ended in a 1-0 score was the grand finale to a great baseball season. Led by Alan Kowalewski, a .418 hitter; Brian Torzewski ' s RBI ' s; and Ed Faulhaber ' s strong pitching arms. Coach Mike Dean ' s young team took its deserved share of the NIVC CO- championship. In addition, it had a 9-1 conference record and a 17-3 over-all mark. If I should speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, 1 have become a blaring trumpet or a tinkling cymbol. If I have enough faith to remove mountains yet do not have love, I am nothing. And if I give away all my possessions to feed the poor and if I sacri- fice my body but do not have love, I profit nothing. For love is not selfish nor thinks evil. It does not envy but is patient, is kind and rejoices with truth. Love believes all things and hopes all things. When knowledge is dissolved by truth and prophesies have been fulfilled, love will be all that remains for it knows no limit and endures forever ADVISER: Br.
