In the field of languages both departments at St. Joseph ' s ofTer four years of English. Four years of Latin are available for boys and two years for girls. As a modern language two years of Spanish are an option with boys and a like two years in French for girls. St. Joseph ' s as yet has no lan- guage lab, but many of its instruc- tors are trained through summer study in the use of labs. They are ready when labs are available. As it turns out, it is left to the individual teacher which method of instruction will be used. In Spanish Brother Anton uses a direct method, teaching Spanish in Spanish with a heavy stress on films, filmstrips, and tapes. Tapes are used in French and Latin classes to drill verb forms and sentence structure, and dialogue tapes enable the student to achieve greater ease in conversation. A slide lecture on Mexico is given by Brother Anton to his Spanish students. 25
