MAKING USE OF THE TRIANGLE AND BLACKBOARD COMPASS two members of the Sophomore geom 6,1 etry class collaborate in the drawing of a demonstration diagram, We Explore Complexlties of Math History has it that the Egyptians were first to or- ganize and develop mathematics, and it was all to help them re-locate property lines after they had been obliterated by annual Nile fioods. Math's revered age and its fundamental importance makes it deservedly the Queen of the Sciences. Putting first things first, scientifically speaking, St. Joseph's Math Department gears itself to the student, giving him as many numbers, figures, and symbols as he can absorb. Especially ta- lented students take advanced, college-preparatory courses. From registration until graduation, St. Joseph's stu- dents are exposed to mathematical symbols that grow in complexity like an inverted pyramid. First there's algebra and the student's way is equated through polynomials and functions. The relationship of lines becomes familiar in geometry and allied subjects. Trigo- nometry and analytics bring more work involving tri- angles and solids. With this background, the St. Joseph's student can apply his knowledge of pure mathematics to everyday problems. USING AN OVERSIZED MODEL FOR CLAR ITY, Tom Szumski instructs Ed Nowacki the manipulation of the slide rule. 18

We Award Academic Excellence At the end of each year, to give recognition to Those students who distinguished Themselves in their class worlc, activities, or leadership, an Awards Night is held. Last year, assembled before parents, teachers, and friends, the students received many awards. Medals were given To students who achieved excellence in religion, languages, and industrial arts. Gift certii- Cates from a local bookstore were given to the students receiving religion awards. Scholastic Honor Certificates, scholarships, awards from societies and other organiza- tions, and for citizenship and attendance were also presented. Donna McLain and John Meuleman were valedic- torians. Genevieve Baker and Tom Connaughton, the salutatorians, addressed the assembly. They praised the work of all the students and encouraged them to carry on this good work through all their lives. As a final token to the school, the senior class president turned over the traditional tomahawk to the president of the junior class. A SCHOLASTIC HONOR CERTIFICATE is presented to Andrew Dincolo by Superintendent Father John Vrabely at the Awards Night Assembly.
