W -- V E TESTING AN OXIDA- TION REACTION, Tom Szymanski looks on as a volcanic cloud dif- fuses its acrid smell about the laboratory. 10 Emphasis on detail was the aim ot the Science Department at St. Joseph's this year. ln the past, the lack ot equipment had handicapped our science pro- gram, particularly in the laboratory section. AI- though a common complaint of science teachers is the lack ot opportunity to carry on a proper labo- ratory program because of the length of classes, equipment also plays an important part in this con- sideration. Due to an increase in demand tor quali- fied scientists, however, we witnessed a rise in inter- est in the sciences here at St. Joseph's, and this rise necessitated an increase in laboratory work. In the boys' chemistry classes, more time was spent in the lab than ever before as students delved into the in- tricacies of analysis. The addition ot 24 microscopes tor the biology lab has made a great difference in the over-all pattern ot this course. In like manner, the girls' biology classes have benefited trom the use ot a new micro-projector. The Physics Depart- ment continued to tascinate its students through the efforts ot Brother Benedict Gervais, CSC., and his hand-fashioned equipment. Again, a summary of the science picture points to the word detail in the class- room and in the lab.
