In recalling Bishop .Noll ' s thirty-one years of service in the Fort Wayne Diocese, Saint Joseph ' s High School can be listed as one of his outstanding accomplishments. Through his fervent desire and extreme gener- osity, the construction of our school was begun on October 26, 1952. With its opening in September 1953, a secondary Catholic education was offered to students of South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart, and Niles. It is truly fitting that the first four- year graduating class of Saint Joseph ' s High School pay tribute to the man who made possible their school. FACULTY Principal BROTHER REGINALD JUSTAK, C.S.C. Christ, the Teacher, whose purpose it is to show us His love and His way, still teaches us through the reli- gious teachers we have here at St. Joseph ' s, the Brothers and Sisters of Holy Cross. Presidents JUNIORS On our merry way we encounter those who dare to be different, the juniors. They speed along down the highway too fast sometimes; then they must pay the fine and try a little hard- er. They have passed the half-way point in education, and their early for- mative years are over. What they are now, they will always be. In a way they are like the highway itself. If their planning, building, and driving is all that it should be, the jun- iors will ride along finding happiness in life and eventually reach God, their eternal destination. ZIMMERMAX Presidents SOPHOMORES On our road of life we have those who are completely and absolutely sure of themselves. That is until they make a mistake. Who are they? Our sopho- mores. They have t raveled St. Joseph ' s road for a while and are coming to know all the signs and curves. They are beginning to pick up speed, to run at a faster, steadier pace. They are like the little trees along the way, sturdy enough to withstand the wind and weather, but still weak enough to bend and grow wrong. With a little care and guidance, through the years they will become strong, sturdy men and women, able to stand up to any storm. Ann Marie Kromkowski and Peter Nemeth. VARSITY FOOTBALL The best team in Ssynt Joe ' s history finished the season with a 5-4 record. In their first game the Indians ' inexperience was woefully apparent as they lost out to a fired-up Wash- ington High team, 13-0. Charlie Easton, shitty Pan- ther quarterback, faked the St. foe lineman out of their . . . positions time after time. At least the In- dians came 28 points closer to Washington than any other St. Joe team. Mike Eger ' s daring signal calling and deadly passing (8 of 11) led the way as St. Joe became the first Catholic high school in Indiana to conquer Hammond Noll. Speedy Ken Reimer ' s 15-yard side- line dash and Kevin Weinberg ' s third quarter slash gave St. Joe its TD ' s. Improved line play confused the Noll backs many times. St. Joe ' s 20-0 win over Fort Wayne Central Cath- olic gave them their first mythical NortherrY ■Indiana Catholic down. Fritz Fischer galloped into the end- zone and flopped on a punt blocked by Jake Szarwark for the first Indian score, and Reimer get the second after Kevin Weinberg set it up on a 60-yard run to the twenty. Dygulski made both extra points. With twelve seconds to go Co-Captain Jake Szarwark snared a Fort Wayne pass and with a terrific burst of speed ran it back five yards. Then, with all his receivers covered, Mike Eger clamped his fingers around the ball and caromed 54 yards for a touch- down. p - — - Sophomore Gerre Phillips ran roughshod over the Iifil ' iaiis ' m the ' Attains game as his team made St. [opsone of its eight victims by a 21-0 score. The tribe meandered to a 32-6 triumph over Gary Portage despite a seven-foot mass of dust which swirled around the field. Weinberg and Reimer each had 47-yard touchdown runs. Reimer racked up number two after a Bob Ganser interception and a Steinhoffer pass. He completed the hat trkk in the last quarter with a thirty-yard stamper. Botka pitched out u I)i k Was who scooted from the .thirty- five to the two-yard line. Was took the ball again and scored. Dick Squaretoe Lootens kicked the extra points. Rock Island High, perennial downstate Illinois champion, broke St. Joe ' s back with second half shock troops and handed the Indians a 28-7 loss. Dick Was did the St. Joe scoring after Jake Szarwark set him up with a blocked punt. St. Joe ' s small trav- eling squad fell apart soon after the score. Big Jake, Leo Krzywkowski. and the two Mikes. Barcza and Wroblewski with the help of Tom Ruppe ' s goal line interception held Gary Mann scoreless as Reimer and Terrible Tommy Lower marked up a touchdown apiece. From Mike Eger ' s 88-yard opening kickoff re- turn to his 63-yard punt to the one-yard line, the Indians were in control. The line once again led the way as Eger, Reimer, Weinberg, and Lower scored against Whiting despite the valiant efforts of Tom Justak, Brother Reginald ' s nephew. St. Joe lost a 24-13 game to Culver ' s undefeated Cadets in their final outing. St. Joe crossed the goal line six times, but the officials called it back for various reasons four of these times. We are proud of the accomplishments of our athletic teams at St. Joseph ' s High School. It is no small task to organize and manage the athletic department in a school the size of St. Joseph ' s. The coaching staff, George Kelly, Angelo Turco. and Ronald Bella, de- serves a large-sized round of applause for their untiring ef- forst in developing representative teams. New standards for making the var- sity, and a liberal sprinkling of under- classmen on the B-Team gave evidence that the future was very much in the mind of the new head coach. Despite plans for the future, St. Joe had a good ball club this year, and when the Indians entered the Holiday Tourney with a 7 — 1 record, South Bend people began to realize that a new power had arisen in city basket- ball. The Indians dropped their first Tourney game by one point to Riley. The cries went up again that St. Joe always folded when it met city com- petition. When the Indians swamped Washington High by 25 points in the consolation game the cries died down somewhat. In their first game of the new year the Indians gained revenge for their earlier defeat by upsetting St. Joseph, No. 3 ranked Michigan team, but they lost their next venture to Washington High. From then on they zig-zagged between unbeatable and impossible, and gradually they became an average team, despite a few brilliant nights. There is one consolation — the team will suffer the loss of only one of its starting players for the ' 57 — ' 58 sea- son. 78 INDIAN B SQUAD KNEELING: B. Voorde, J. Brothers, E. Delahanty, F. Bob ' s scholastic skill as well as his skill at baseball and football is not easily overlooked. He has been outstanding in all three and is sure to be successful at anything he undertakes. Art was a faithful four-year man on St. Joe ' s football team. He received his coveted varsity letter in his senior vear. Bob Ganger Art Zielinski 82 LETTERMEN Jake Szarwark As co-captain and stav tackle of our team, Jake was always in there fighting. Jake honored himself and his school this year by winning honorable mention on the National Catholic All-American Team. Bob, who ' s tops as an infielder, plans to camp on first base again this season. As a senior Bob held the distin- guished position of president of the Bovs ' Senate. He has always been an all-around actrve Indian, and his scholastic record is impressive, too. Chuck is one of those fellows who hasn ' t shared the limelight often, but his spirit and drive certainly help to account for the boost in St. Joe ' s football fortunes! And his drive paid olF with a Varsity letter. Bob DeMeester Chuck VanVynckt Tom Ruppe Joe Simeri A co-captain of the football squad as well as one of the team ' s biggest men, Tom did justice to the difficult position of center. His determination and drive ranked him with the best. The senior class president has sparked admiration in the hearts of all who have come in contact with him. Though small in stature his ability and intelligence sur- passes many a giant. His pleasing personality and his ability to cope with any situation make him an excellent manager and all-around sport. Quiet, unassuming Mike Barcza, centered his interests on football and came out on top. His love of the game was surpassed only by his determination to play it. Mike has always been an admirable guy around the schoolhousel Mike Barcza 84 sawamamm LETTERMEN Dick Was Dick wa s highly regarded by his classmates who elected him class officer for two years in succession. He was an ex- cellent halfback as well as a valuable member of the track team. Gene, the smallest man on the Indian squad, proved his weight in worth with his hard work and striving spirit. Whether on the practice field or in a game, Gene made a mighty contribution to the Indian ' s spirit. Reliability is the keynote to Jerry ' s performances throughout his four years at St. Joe. His dependability was one of his main assets on the football field; he received his varsity letter this year. Jerry Stockberger Mike Eger LETTERMEN Mike made his mark as an outstanding athlete during his stay at Saint Joseph ' s. He ' s a real sportsman in both football and basketball. A class officer for four years, Ken has maintained a high scholastic rating. In addition he has a well-rounded athletic record including baseball, foothall, and basketball. He has been outstanding in all three and is sure to be successful at anything he undertakes. Stick-to-itiveness is a tag merited by Sam. His deter- mination was rewarded when he received his varsity letter for football before the Christmas holidays. Ken Reimer Sam Dellinger 86 •T- — T: ■■■-. -■ ,r. EUaaHHHHHiH Ernie Kolesiak Pete Gapczynski ■S Ernie, whose happy carefreeness is a source of enjoy- ment to all, has done well in every one of the fields he has entered. His power hitting and speed-demon defensive play spirited our baseball team to their best season in the history of the school. His adaptability has marked Ernie with a spirit to achieve. Pete, a glue-finger end and ferocious blocker, who went about his football business with do or die determination, is indeed a true Saint Joseph ' s man. His seriousness in classwork and extracurricular activities will undoubtedly reflect itself in Pete ' s future accomplishments. Leo, a pioneer of tennis at Saint Joe ' s, helped to organ- ize the first team. He has achieved a fine scholastic record and has been a popular clerk in the school bookstore for three vears. Leo Jaroszewski Jon Dudeck LETTERMEN Jon, who won the Kiwanis Award as the most valuable athlete and outstanding senior, never let himself be under- estimated. He played to the best of his ability which was always tops. Ralph played hard football for four years. A fast, light back, Ralph was at a disadvantage against the heavy teams he faced. Oft the field, Ralph doesn ' t show the aggressive spirit that carried him through tough competition. A quiet, unassuming fellow, he is a good student and classmate. Bill has been one of St. Joe ' s determined young sports- men for four years. He has been a vital part of our football scpiad, even though a knee injury kept him from seeing extensive action in his senior year. Bill never strained him- self in studies but managed to retain fairly respectable grades during high school. Ralph Schoen maamumammmmmammma John Kromkowski Dick Lootens X- _ John, an outstanding student, rates high on any team. His achievements are many and his potential far greater. He ' s a whiz on the tennis court and a wizard scholastically. He is a member of the U. S. Table Tennis Team and was the National Junior Mixed Doubles Champ in 1956. Dick carved a lot of niches in the lines of opposing teams with his jarring charges. Hampered by a bad back, he was still a pillar of our tough defensive crew. A live wire in and out of uniform, Dick is just one of the boys to all the seniors. Tom, a scholastic honor student, has made the most of a fine high school career. An avid baseball player, Tom has held down a regular hurling job for four years. Tom Malinowski BOYS ' STUDENT SENATE The main purpose of the boys ' Student Senate is to promote the most worthwhile interests of the student body. The goal was achieved this year, un- der the direction of Brother Kenan, by the president, Bob DeMeester, and the representatives and alter- nates elected in the homerooms. Purchasing a fan for the smoking room, providing recreational ac- tivities, and publishing a student directory were a few of this year ' s accomplishments. The members of the Senate are: R. Hurtubise, D. Jablonski, R. Weber, K. Kasprzak, R. Tremel, D. Fox, B. Niedbalski, B. Urbanski, T. Serge, P. Xemeth, H. Biddle, C. Caenepeel, R. Quigley, J. Simeri, T. Ruppe, L. Krzykowski, F. Glentzer, T. Lewinski, f. Dempsey, and B. DeMeester. 90 aaamammaam GIRLS ' STUDENT SENATE The newly organized Girls ' Senate, under the gi idance of Sister Mary Marcian and Eleanore Cwicklinski, president, awakened in the student body an appreciation of personal responsibility to the home, to the school, to the Church, and to society, as Catholic lay teachers and apostles. The Senate, consisting of the class presidents and one elected rep- resentative from each homeroom, has as its objective, to recommend necessary and proper improvements of the school, and to investigate and to report mat- ters referred to it by the moderator and by Sister desVictoires. The Senate ' s hope is that after school days, every Saint Joseph ' s girl will carry into her adult world right values in her intellectual, spiritual, and moral life. Members of the Senate are: J. Tschida, E. Cwik- linski. S. Horvath, C. Bratina, D. Crowder, J. Chwalek, J. Swiatowy, M. Nabicht, N. Ballatore, B. Dooley, P. McNeile, A. Kromkowski, K. Mrozinski, M. Glon. C. Kuboske, M. Kintz, B. Wray. MAIDS AND BRAVES HOLD Frequent stops for relaxation were made along our road. The favorite service area for many was the gym. There the music of Billy Nicks, The Rhythemaires, and others provided us with many fun-filled hours of dancing. In addition to the class mixers and regular dances, something new was added this year — The Howdy Hour. Under the direction of the Social Science Department the first Howdy Hour was arranged and met with much success. Others followed and were held after the games durina; the football season. 92 «urw j iim «.,. m .K-„- J v ,x  „ m „ ,. „. . „„ POW wow Howdy Hour Frosh live it up at mixer. Under the patronage of Saint Joseph, the Worker, we have participated in many religious events. We began the school year in September with the traditional Mass of the Holy Spirit. Each month the various classes, in turn, have attended Mass and received Holy Communion in a body as a proof of their faith. During Advent the Faculty and the entire student body made a novena for the intention of purity among teenagers. In the waning days of Advent the sophomore and freshman retreat was conducted by Father Godfrey Poage, C.P. His force- ful, hard-hitting speeches caused the students to meditate on their past achievements and their future plans. The senior and junior retreat was held on Monday, Tues- day, and Wednesday of Holy Week. Father Henri DuLac, the retreat master, especially encouraged the seniors to think serious- ly about the steps they were about to take and above all to guard their faith. In June we shall end as we began with a Mass, the Bac- calaureate Mass, the seniors ' last at Saint Joseph ' s High School. 110 RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES HOME The homemaking program of Saint Joseph ' s High School is functional in helping the girls to gain experience which will be beneficial to them in home and family living. Planning and serving meals, rules of etiquette and correct table settings are a few of the objec- tives of the course. As a special first-year project the food class baked cookies and hundreds of multi-flavored Christmas goodies, and boxed them very at- tractively for friends of the cooks. Sister Mary Immaculata is pictured at the left showing Connie Miko and Rose Mucha the floor plans of the kitchens of the future. The picture below shows a group of budding Betty Crockers sharpening up on K. P. Tech- niques. Before and After ECONOMICS A stitch in time saves nine, so goes the saying. These diligent young home-makers of the needle and thread brigade deftly measure, baste, and stitch their finery. The girls ' activities this year included making Christmas gifts for their friends and relatives, and making themselves the attractive clothes which they wore in the annual spring style show. SHOP CLASSES Mr. Davis explains the proper technique. Scale model of the shop r V r$ ART CLASSES Janet Ruthsatz Portraits, posters, scrapbooks, land- scapes, and carvings — all of these are the products of our art classes. Dur- ing- the course of the year, the boys, under the direction of Brother Harold, have made various posters, silkscreen- ings, and Christmas Cribs. The girls, with Sister Zita Marie as their instruct- or, enhanced the beauty of the school with Christmas decorations and en- riched the minds of the students with such displays as the pictoral plea for the reading of good Catholic lit- erature. . i PI0 4 ... f THE MOST REVEREND LEO.
