We emerged with the traditional freshman greenness, looking forward to four years of fun, parties, football and basketball games, dances, exams, and the routine of regular studies. High school classes, new teachers, meeting new students from other parishes, may have frightened us, but our parents told us that we would soon get used to it. And so we did. At the end of our freshman year, we loved high school and were anticipating the Catholic high school at the corner of Michigan and Angela. 4 n , Qr 17'7'7wm. fmruu u f 'Tm .D - ,K ,, :ff ' --W,?,+ -Rfk, -H ' ' Y vi ', -V -' ' . 'E .W 4 5 an eww .lata We are completing our high school lite in a new, big, St. Joseph's Catholic High School. Leaving with the wisdom and experience of a high school career, we will treasure the studies, exams, dances, football and basketball games, parties, and fun of our tour years. We have triecl to grow in religion, character, and intelligence as the school has grown in spirit, statue, and students. Whether we were an Academy girl, South Bend Catholic student, or Shule boy, we will remember the part we played in the history and tradition of a new school. This will be the last tribute to those schools and the seniors who began their high school journeys there. 4eSa4a4Zf4 ' Reverend Michael Vichuras Broiher Reginald Jusiolk, C.S.C. Finding ST. .loseph's already Two years old and tootworn by the many stu- dents who had preceded Them, they did not let much time pass before starting To show a spirit of enthusiasm Toward the development of The school program. The co-curricular activities of the classroom, the ath- letic contests, the mixers, the skating parties, the assemblies, and even The dramatic endeavors, were well represented by The class of '59. Coach George Kelly and Assistant Coach Angelo Turco developed their material with an eye for the future, making possible some of the brighter moments in this school's history. The season opener against Washington was rather a shock to the Indians as the Panthers slashed to a 4l-O victory over the inexperienced lndians. However, this loss was taken in stride as the Indians came back to administer a 25-6 shellacking to the Washington Clay Colonials at the dedication of Clay's new field, Chuck Sweeney, Hank Tschida, and Bob Ganser led the way with touchdowns and Jake Szarwark collected the lone extra point. ln the third game, Fort Wayne Central Catholic fell before the determined St. Joseph's squad, T3-7. By this victory over the City Champions of Fort Wayne, the indians at last reached the big time. John Gamble's two touchdowns in this game put him in the public eye, and probably went a long way toward his placement on the first-string All City Team. An upset-minded St. .loseph's eleven outplayed John Adams in the Hrst half of that game. Fumbles, fumbles, and more fumoles thoroughly ruined the lndians' chance for an upset. The score was tied 6 to 6 at halftime thanks to Fritz Fischer's T.D. The G.A.A. was organized the tTrst year that the school started in l953. Due to the lack ot our own gym, then, all games were played at the St. Joseph's Grade School gym. By the middle of the second year, however, our own gym was ready and we gladly moved in. This last year the gym was used for the volleyball and basketball games. The main sports are volleyball, basketball, bowling, and some swim- ming, which was taken care ot at the city natatorium. Mrs. Thomas Miller, directress of the Girls' Athletic Association. Olive 81 Western Casey Kusz, Mgr., George Lansburg, A 744a6iyoa Assn sst. I I ll The inside story of Saint Joseph's High is not merely the story of the development of the physical plant with its additions of shrubbery, stage equipment, kitchen fixtures, and other material advancements, but the story of the enthusiasm and hard work which made these things possible. However, an inside story would not be complete without the men- tioning of the moments of anxiety during exams, the thrill of an athletic contest, the prepa- ration for a social event, and the prayers which bind these activities together as tribute to our Christian education. I hope that this edition of The Hi-Way will bring to you memories of your past year at Saint Joseph's. We have tried our very best to penetrate the outside walls and tell to you, pictorially, the inside story. In later years, when you have established yourself in the world of business and soci- ety, you may page through this volume and recall the pleasant experiences of your long forgotten high school days. You may also remember how Saint Joseph's did its very best to get you started on the right foot. lf these points have been clearly established, then and only then, has our endeavor to present this inside story been successfully accomplished. If the Hi-Way for 1956 meets with your approval, our success is due in a great part to the splendid cooperation that we have received from all who were connected with it. Accordingly, The Hi-Way wishes to express its sincerest thanks to the following individuals . . .to Mr. Raymond Patnaude for his excellent and much appreciated photography. . . .to Brother Harold Ruplinger, C.S.C., faculty advisor and part-time photographer, for his patience and unlimited day and night pursuance of duty. . . .to Mr. Robert Albertson of the Josten Yearbook Company, for his advice and coopera- tion. .. .to all the members of the energetic staff who willingly donated their unlimited time and efforts. They have all been interested in the success of the Hi-Way, and their cooperation and support has enabled us to successfully attain our goal.
