GN y Mk. - f -- ■4Br ««   Hi ■• ■■3«! Saint Joseph ' s High School South Bend, Indiana Presents THE HIWIY Of 1954 DEDICATION In a spirit of true devotion and humility, we, the students of St. Joseph ' s High School dedicate this yearbook to Mary Immaculate, Virgin Spouse of our own scholastic patron, in celebration of the centenary of the promulgation of the Dogma of her Immaculate Conception; and in acknowledgment of her as the Patroness of our nation, supplicating her to lead us, in the path of righteousness, to eternal happiness with her Divine Son. The Most Rev. John Francis Noll, D.D. Archbishop-Bishop of Fort Wayne To the Archbishop . . . To His Excellency, the MostReverend John Francis Noll, recently elevated to the rank of Archbishop by His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, in recognition of his noble contributions to Catholic journalism; in acknowledgement of him as the architect of Catholic education, who has in his munificence, spanned the dark gulf of ignorance with an intellectual bridge to the bright land of God ' s truth, with his great efforts for education in this his diocese. The Story of St. Joseph ' s High School History ... On October 26, 1952, a step forward in the field of Catholic education was taken. Ground was broken for St. Joseph ' s High School. This was to be a novel merger of three of South Bend ' s Catholic high schools. A long awaited dream of supporters of parochial education was about to be realized. Through continued sacrifice on the part of the people and stewardly management on the part of the clergy, the school was erected. It was blessed on September 20, 1953, by His Excellency, Archbishop John Francis Noll, and dedicated to the patronage of St. Joseph. In the same month the first students passed through its doors. This is but a beginning. The history of our school is yet to be written. It is the hope of the students that this same history will be lengthy and glorious and that its principles of Catholic education will long endure. ADMINISTRATION Brother Reginald Justak, C.S.C. When it became apparent that Catholic secondary education must have greater facilities for the youth of the South Bend and Mishawaka area, a diocesan drive was begun in order to build a new Catholic high school. Under the direction of Rt.Rev. Msgr. John S. Sabo, Dean of the South Bend Deanery, the pastors ofJ;he v r ' iousi )scfeEJol would parishes, and a gr o up o l vote lay- men, the people ' IJthis vicinity were eno ' purage -to contribute to this cause. So silccessful was on October Leo A. Piirsley, Auxiliary Fort Wayhe as able to turn the first clump of ' •irth oi the new school building, situatSW on th corner of Michigan Street and Aiffee: Botii£vard. Construction was begun irftm diately on this site, which was donated By the Brother of Holy Cross. Until this time, there existed thrfe Catholic high schools, Central C olic, St. Joseph ' s Academy an| Bend Catholic, all of whic under limited facilities d|f a mber of years. Because of MC cVease in the Catholic population, new consol- idated high school was imperative. That the best possible materials and equipment were procured, the pictures on these pages will convincingly attest. The $1,900,000 school is of modern contemporary design and is located at the city limiits on the main thorough- fare leading into South Bend, where it stands as a tribute to the devotion and self-SeLcrifice of the clergy and faithful of the South Bend Deanery. No name was given the new school antil September, 1953, when the first students entered its doors. Shortly afterwards, at a meeting of the priests of this deanery, a unanimous choice was reached of the thirty -five names su| nsjittd§|., ' for consideration. -CjS be knownms d in Saint Jose honor oft gin Mary- Church. Curran has admi- rably directed all forms of athletics at the Catholic High School of South Bend. The foremost display of his coaching ability was evidenced when during this past year he led his foot- ball team to an undefeated season and the rightfully deserved title of best offensive team in the state. During the latter part of this year , however, Mr. Curran was selected to coach the B football team at the University of Notre Dame. Although the school accepted his resignation with regret, nevertheless, everyone was conscious of the honor which had been be stowed upon him and indirect- ly on the school and so they wished him every success in his new posi- tion. Frannie ' s name will always re- main outstanding among the coaches of our school. For inaugurating the tradition of winning, for endearing himself to the students in both a coaching and teaching capacity, and, most of all, for being an outstanding example of a Christian gentleman, he will be remembered with respect and affection by all at St. Joseph ' s High School. South Bend Basketball Sectional St. Joseph ' s - 60 Washington - 48 St. Joseph ' s - 49 Mishawaka - 59 During The winning smile Photos: courtesy of the South Bend Tribune On February 25, 1954, the St. Joseph ' s Indians came of age! In their first appearance in the South Bend City Sectionals, the lightly re - gardedSaints polished off the Wash- ington Panthers, City Champs, in a stunning victory which will probably go down as the greatest single vic- tory in the school ' s history. Al- though behind during most of the game, the Indians pulled ahead of the Panthers in the last quarter and posted a 60-48 final score. In the semi-finals game with the Mishawaka Maroons, however, the Indians suffered their second loss of the season by a score of 59-49. Battling right up to the final gun, the St. Joseph ' s quintet could not over- come a first period deficit thus end- ing their hopes of further tourna- ment play. The St. Joseph ' s Indians, nevertheless, had proven that they were to be numbered among the city ' s basketball elite. 58 Spiritual Activities The students of St. Joseph ' s High School, during the past year, have participated in various spiritual exer- cises, enabling them to achieve a greater understanding of the place of religion in their daily lives. Besides the daily instruction in the religion classes , such opportunities as First Friday conlessions, school re- treats, and the liturgical services of Ash Wednesday and the blessing of throats have been provided to help the students appreciate the spiritual values of their religion. The Hi-Lite The school paper, The Hi -Lite, carries over its name from the South Bend Catholic High School ' s newspaper , and is published monthly under the supervision of Sister Louis Irene, C.S.C. andBrother Lawrence Fitch, C.S.C. Composed of four pages, printed in a highly glossy finish, the paper devotes a page to current news and one to various school activities and features , plus a sports and editorial page. Because of organizational diffi- culties, the Hi-Lite was not printed as frequently as desired this year. Plans have been made, however, so that next year it will be published regularly each month. So said General MacArthur as he concluded the ceremonies ending World War II. So we, the editors of the Hi- Way say, as the finishing touches are put on this, the final page. For the past few months , the yearbook office has been turned into a madhouse as we hurried to meet deadlines, to gather photographs, and to turn out suitably planned pages in a minimum length of time. Now the rush is over. The copy sheets are typed and signed, the job number stamp is dis- carded and the pictures are filed away. We turn objectively to our finished work and see that it is good. Ours has been the responsibility of setting a precedent; of putting out a volume worthy of our successors. We believe we have done so. We have attempted to tell the story of an in- stitution still in its birth throes; to recreate the experiences of the first year of our new school. It is the belief of the editors that these same experiences which now bring only a slight smi or a raising of an eyebrow from the participant w ill be remembered with joy and ever cherished in later years. If then during later life , the 1954 Hi-Way pro- vides a clearer and happier memory of the high schooldays of some students, then our purpos as Robert L. Stevensonhas put it, . . . to rai; a voice in the silence of eternity , will have been accomplished. vc[«2 A. G. Farrell J. R. Langford C. A. Murphy TC f 10 5 2009 DT 179689 1 7 00 I
