We were the first Freshmen to wear uniforms. With the amount of knowledge that Freshmen usually have, we plugged along and at the end of the term we passed. In September, 1930, after a pleasant vaca- tion, we all returned except one, Estella Pfeffer- korn who returned to her home town school in Ashley. Most of us received typewriting and shorthand awards. In the fall of 1931 all five returned. We were beginning to realize that there were not many more years for us in school. The great- est event of this year was the addition of one more year to our high school course, changing it from three to four years. Three of us, Alice Klinker, Catherine Pence and Ursula Vander- bosch, decided to return the next year and com- plete the additional year’s work, but two of the class graduated and one left us just before graduation. The three of us returned in the fall of 1932. The year round we warded for the end with the help of those who encouraged us to continue onward for the gaining goal. This year is marked by many momentous occasions, the greatest of which was our dramatic victory “Patty Makes Things Hum.” Now the time has arrived for our departure, which means conclu- sion of all our follies and accomplishments at St. Joseph’s as high school students; in the future it will be as alumnae members. On the banks of the Iroquois River, ex- hausted from a strenuous hike, I decided to take a rest. My intention was not to fall asleep but accidentally this is what I did. I seemed in my sleep t o have a vision in which I was more of an invisible form visiting former school friends in their present mode of living, namely, in the year 1960. I seemed to pass into a large office at the Municipal Airport. Two people in here were strangers, but the private secretary, I immediately recognized to be my old friend, Ursula Vanderbosch, from the Senior Class of 1933. The strangers were the owners of the corporation and they were planning to send Ursula to London as their representative. She seemed quite happy and I hope my dear classmate will fill her position very successfully. 72.7 :7oo ooo I seemed then to pass into a heavy sleep, when again I began to dream. The situation this time was in a university of the State of Washington, where I met another of my friends, Catherine Pence. She was teaching Modern Literature in an entertaining manner. The ap- preciation of her work was evident through the comments of every student. Once more I rested and also once more I dreamed of the third and last student, Alice Klinker, of the year 1933. She was endeavor- ing to save the life of a small child in the worst siege of double pneumonia. For a moment there was darkness and then the child appeared in the arms of Alice, regaining strength. Each has chosen a worthy profession on the pathway upon which God bids us travel. (a) To Reverend J. G. (b) To Sister Adeline, our loving teacher, who has shown so much kindliness, and charity to us during our four year course, we leave also our gratitude, respect, and love, for we can say over and over, that we’ve never had such a won- derful teacher as she, and a teacher that will never be forgotten by us, nor in the history of our school. Item 2—To our Juniors who are struggling to reach the goal which we have now attained, we wish much success and happiness. (a) I, Catherine Pence, bequeath to Agnes Schivell, who has not broken the recor d of gum chewing at school, will leave all that is to be found under the desks, and thereabouts. Four long years within this schoolroom Have we bowed to law and rule; Four long years we’ve worked together Learning why we go to school. We have worked through cloud and sunshine; We have smiled when things went wrong, Now, at last, we’ve reached the highway Though the hill was rough and long. At life’s cross-road we’ll be parted, Each alone his path must take, On that path we’ll learn the lesson, Learn to labor and to wait. Just a word to those who follow, To the ones who take our place: Juniors, you must do us credit, Do your best while in the race. Sophomores, too, must heed our warning, Seniors you will stand some day, Work with zeal for man and country, ’Ere from school you go away. Now, to warn the humble Freshmen We were Freshies in our time, Labor hard to win your credits And.you too, will make the climb. When we’re gone, we’ll still remember Memories dear will not erase; And we'll think with fond remembrance Of each true and loyal face. So, farewell, before we leave you, Now, we’ll say a last goodbye, May you profit by our errors And win fame for our dear HIGH. SALUTATORY Reverend Father, dear friends: We wonder if you can realize just how proud we are of this privilege of appearing before you tonight and bidding you welcome to the simple ceremonies in which we are able to participate as the very first class passing out into the world of real work from the four year course of our and your parish high school. We are so small in number that we might perhaps feel more humble than we do, did we not understand full well the unique place we are to hold in the history of this school through all the years that are yet to come. Classes will come and go; boys and girls will pour forth from these doors in all the pride of a finished course of study; men and women in years to come will look back with fond recollections to the days of their school life within these walls; but there will never be another class like unto this in all the years that are to be. We alone OO o-oo eo B can be the first, even if those who follow may be larger, wiser and better and more attractive from the world’s point of view. But you, dear Reverend Father, and you, our parents and friends, who have by your kind and persistent labors made it possible for us to graduate here tonight from this peaceful place, have a right to ask of us that we show our col- ors, give voice to our principles, our aims and our ambitions; for it is through them and what we make of them, that all honor must reflect back upon the school whose seal we bear. We trust that you may ever find us faithful to those virtues for which you have taught us to stand as we face the problems that are to confront us outside, and so be leading lights to the classes which follow us. And now, to you all, we can only in our feeble way attempt to express our pleasure in your coming. We are truly glad to have you with us. 2 e9n4% eee wollol ado ar od? raosig ive ody! o.w doac a oT jtheto eo oh Tham wey .cuctnul cet off ni ow Jeod thw od] outvmw roo besd lena wel ow ah otoa bugle Uw wrinved bak man t0l “EEwWy wronged yov anoles leon ath wi Vl Cx Coe fnediva mon oi isntlees etument ot Teor a? ve a oo it thashla Dee av slibei THoY afw W Jied satin Tet ie 4 ee Fe Owe eo Ow OO O-e § OOH OS See a iemiedain Aan eine eee a ein ae | i dition ade athe fiw oot woe. bod : } deine: lite Wow soon ot'ew cath : :semny tog Tow yesh eopocesll v Aad? few baé lage bone ond doee 20 sonauhneurnie Bae) dj! ove vant wo int odw, ssed) T] aeve dei ant od nag ov does Siem baw raided bra wseiw aogial od wally) to tnieg e’hiow ati mort wo Wo bus tadia® hisieveA teob coy Tues . dna bala vey gd wend odw wbaeiyt han stamiag 0} aw wt afdi fi shen auedei tistaieieg soni luinoseg ott tdgined si4d olathe gy “les 00 Wwote aw jadt ey Yo Ban 0) idgit 6 Svad bes amis ido gelgleditg 10. of soiov avin ew tad fae peels i Jt Ol jencstidasg ta toafer taunt tougd Ua dad? .ecody to odeny Ser ta9d ow bees aaodyy toods2 of) sega aad 2 e-2-2-4-.- 0 oo 2 GE HOCH Of OH RO He ODE HO OO Om Dw et o} aidgil yaibaal od con iy0 sf yao aaa ma ni oipasaly 300 2 coy wad oF baly ve GJ09 G4A BAD 409 £00... een et OOO Oe ee LLL IO OE a St ne eo re ee ay ¥ “a MHOF 2BAIO a bow « tent oy evasl ew stetad Jovweiat ydboog jacl « ye iow wok a eonTis woe yd Sony “oy lt YOUN 4290 avo 101 ome) ciw bo A” Oe © Oe OY FD ee Pe -O ee Oe OL a a ee: Be tel YAOTATUIAR = letddial au hove: i HOY tad? tcv7t OW ew Siguet BON: foes maaiciy Fdsvsted a ao! evs Jari? — . ; i . 7 bi - ss Wn ; ‘ i ¢ i o a) =xion Gior yo Gna foam Uiw godt seas Jaintay vst od tliw eedT atieain at9ineS wilgesd sft WE -G OF senon baw Wmered iw 2nd wootloodon eit oltiier avasy oxo! sce: isin baw wel wi bowed ue svat torliegod beaver avian fusy yook s0% Joodoe of oy eA weiw gitintasd 7Suifenva hoe beols Aguend? heltow oval Se ucty jaow egnid? godw bstims vad 6W yvewoyic edd bedoset gv'aw Jeni te owe enol bas dugor aaw Uist ois ignott bottsg od Hew baaeacw ewhp iA ist tau diag etd «note toatl” aft eo! abd eansl few dong dodt- no jhe of bre social at ined oa: twhnaow oW :ebuskt 1aob gedit basse air to san ow Cae ae brta selyteros coy creed gnitasqqa ba rusliv esimorn 39% siduaie ot ot wanontew doy view vd? ae sisyiskheg afelda ava ow § acl tl aoa yolssaq ar = bi 78 THO is 4 moit3 i donde tigi sali. ie cae ee oe tal oan dire Ngee dor supinu . t baater q oup ad uf auld i Dat loodsa aid Gwin ©uURPLE AND GOLD VALEDICTORY Reverend Father, dear friends, teachers and classmates: Our little boat halts this evening at the bending of the stream and we are sum- moning strength for the journey before us. Our journey is through many deep and un- known channels, with many curves and turns which make it difficult for us to know what is ahead. But it is pleasant to pause at the bend- ing of the stream and consider for a little the calmness of the wave ripples through which we have been so easily rowing; but we cannot linger long for the noise of life’s great waters is calling us to pull hard through the stormy stream of an active life. Dear Reverend Father, teachers and friends, We cannot resume our journey without thank- ing you from the bottom of our hearts for the privilege of beginning life’s voyage on such a peaceful stream, for, for the past four years our little bark has floated smoothly along on a calm stream. We have been warned by those we love of the evil rocks and tangle of sea weed so sure to @ e-eeooeo oo be met with on our onward course. So with renewed courage we push out to per- form our duties in the splendid sea of life. Thus, classmates, we linger at the end of our course. Until now we have paddled to- gether through the school waves behind us, but now each one of us must row alone into the deeper channels to come. Let us, as we are forced apart, keep our coral and silver, with all they signify to each of us, ever flying at the mast head and so face every duty of the un- known waters bravely and boldly, let the prin- ciples of honor ever turn the pilot wheel as we sail to the success no graduate of this school can ever fail to win. Farewell dear old school! Farewell life’s happy morning It grieves the heart When classmates part But haste, haste away! For life has duties to be done And every day till set of sun Must be lived loyally, O haste, haste away. VALUES The class leaving our halls this June is the first to have .the advantage of the four-year course. Preceding classes left after having completed the two-year course, or in the last several years the three-year course and entered into the swirl of life to take their places. They were indeed prepared well and have thrown glory on themselves and on their school. With an education in the principles of truth and righteousness combined with the knowledge of commercial practices they are now engaged in business or have undertaken the holy vocation of making homes where the children profit by the correct training of their parents. They have learned, we are convinced, that of their educa- tion the most valuable part was that which drew forth the powers of mind under inspira- tion of faith, by which their lives were moulded after the lives of the’Saints. Without under- estimating the knowledge of commercial sub- jects we feel free to say that the classical and the literary give them much more true joy and far more power than they had realized while in school. And the growth of knowledge of the spiritual during the years of their school life must be for them the purest happiness, for it is this knowledge that will carry them through the harder times of life and give them a brighter hope of unending glory. With ripening wis- dom they are able to set in proper relation the various studies of their school curriculum, hav- ing learned in the school of experience what the Church has always taught. With a grateful appreciation the under- graduates welcome the opportunity of a longer period of training in just those things that will remain their highest and rarest possessions throughout life. Their period of schooling coincided with this unwelcome time of distress which perforce brought out the true values of education. The hopes of happiness in things material are not so bright and confidence in worldly things not so unshaken as might have been entertained were times more propitious. Welcome, therefore, in the opportunity of gath- ering knowledge of the more stable and more elevated things. When the world fails to give pleasure those who value correctly, will not be without the safe and solid moorings of true education. Understanding that happiness can- not be found in the empty and fleeting wealth of time, eternity and its safe and certain prom- ises will be for them the anchor to steady and comfort them. The first month.it was rather difficult to become acquainted with so many new things. We were well rewarded at the end of the year when we were informed that we were to become “Sopho- mores.” REAL LIFE If you are made of the right stuff you will meet the troubles and trials of life uncomplain- ingly. Adversity is often the blessing of God in disguise. The school of adversity gradu- ates the ablest pupils, and the hill of difficulty is the best for strengthening mental backbone. If you refrain from kicking when trouble is your lot it is an evidence that you have the ‘right stuff in your makeup. You need trials to develop your character. Great men can no more be made without trials than brick can be made without fire. Do not kick or even sit down and cry over those poor old “might have beens.” Just accept what comes to you and do your best, content to know that by and by will surely bring vacation time, the unending holidays, and home. Re- member how many otherwise sweet natures lie all about you spoiled by prosperity like over- ripe apples in the sun. ACTIVITIES The High School students attended the un- veiling of the Lincoln Monument in Ft. Wayne. The boys organized a basketball team. They played several games with neighboring towns as well as a home town school and they won their share, too. Norbert is our “Star” player. The girls, too, organized, played and won home games and games with neighboring teams. We wish to express our sincere thanks to’ “ Mr. Merwood Sapp and Miss Olive Thomas who so enthusiastically coached both of our teams. We look forward for great sport next year in the different games and we’ll do our best to win. Members of the Booster Club enjoyed them- selves at a weenie roast in the school yard. A public card party was held in the church t7o72eoo We started this year with seven in our class. We were a happy lot and very ambitious. We had several class parties and all enjoyed them- selves. As we again drew near to judgment day we began to worry. But these worries all vanished when we became “Juniors.” We lost only one this year. We fully real- ize the part we now have to play because soon we will be dignified “Seniors.” basement in October. A delicious lunch was served by the committee. On the same evening the children played bunco in the school hall. The annual bazaar was held December the thirteenth and fourteenth. It was well patron- ized by the-members of the parish. A beautiful Christmas program was pre- sented for the public in December. An exhibit of the work done in the Manual Training Class and the Domestic Science Class was held in the church basement. A large crowd attended and admired the work. The Senior Class play, “Patty Makes Things Hum’, was given in the school hall. All played their parts well. A jolly entertainment was given by the school children to commemorate Father Ben- nett’s Feast day. The annua! Senior banquet will be held May the thirty-first. The High School girls who are members of the Blessed Virgin Sodality helped to serve a lunch at the initiation of the Daughters of Isa- bella. The Booster Club of our High School had a delightful party on May the ninth. Violin and piano solos were a feature of the entertain- ment. Following the banquet the class will be taken on a picnic. The members of our Booster Club packed a large box of clothing, soap, medicines, etc., and sent it to one of the poor missions in the West. Two of our students, Catherine Hyde and Lucille Johnson, took first and third prizes in a Poster Contest sponsored by the Professional Women’s Club. Over 200 posters were entered by grade pupils and high school students of the public and parochial grade and high schools of the city. a1009 Pe-e-o oe te oereewes eels we oi aeveediier yest aid! bsiiain OW oW .enoitidms yey bue tol yaqad 2 si4sw oY “moni beye( te Iw have eating eaalo (aisvee had jaomghe, of is8a weih alapa ow 2A .savled ‘in eeirow seeds de ocrrow af axyod owewah “win” esiaosd aw acdw bedelnav teor qiict SW yews sid? ano ¢lao feo! 97 Nous seussed waht o) avad wow avi frag off sal “asetase@” belliagib ed thw. ow sew forwl eodiviles A -edbicO «al dnsmternd yiitiovs «steed ni oO jséthimmas edd ed heroes (ed loose eat ri conte baynly tietblido od) ait +odinsge( blot paw demied Isusin af? -goisag law eew tl Siig pl? baw clase silt -Arivac. sd? te evedigam. sci ed bow! 719 atw metnowg dumehri IWitteasd A tadmisoml at oifdaq ed? iY hetaoa Inugamt od? af euch 240 off Io didifxe n 2h eouste? siteoiuoG of} bry exal untae? yinl A Jeers dagpdtp 43 ni bled ean Jheow 9113 borlabs bal bebustia teyois mditT zedaM vts'T’” ally seef) coined aT bu¥alg HA Jied loodae se? a) nevig ew “onl Hew stisg vied? aid yd aevig vow Ssacmdiateino uUtot A - al totic aterortsmens of aevbliists foudon Nab teset aWen w2M bisa od Uw tecpnsd doles? ieeona of F Jerit-yi1idd orld to aradimger ot6 odw altig loons? agit «dT oriet mt hegled wiishe?® piwiV hbecesIA odf -nel lo otwldgead odd Yo moltgitint odt 32 domgl i + 2-422 © t- © 2-6-8 + © «6o-@@-+ 4 © © SPO OD OE PO OO OS OP- 6-8 oe —e o = oe Oe - = © s bad loodod dail 10 Yo dul tefe00 of PF - bos riloiV .diain edd yall wo eq ic ietpifeh tiethet« aff Yo stytasl @ arew soloz anaig Jet ad ittw vaslo edt toupand ad} yaiwollct Sinoig a ao asigt « bedaeg dufD yedso0l swo Yo eisdmon edT ons ,.23¢ ,ssitlothens qnde gnidiois to xod egtal res W ad? oi aneietion s90q odd to sae of ti tno 8 8 8 ee ee OD Oe OO th 0 6 he a O48) OE el -O-0- ee ib ene OO Pe A te pt am r mo} y wg a ye _ Gus RAdRUE wU0 tigi ovlews to eesto oye eiaey oatdT d9i vidt otal bevlouramt eltig bas avod besal ma I tud dballes sew aw “gained” Jeong -90Ta 84 tent eozanis téclfo ete aisdt tad? sxud gimooed of JiusMib yedjat cow 4 a)com tel of eawewW egallid wor goami oe Miv botsisepel ow nedw sagy ad? to has a9 ds bebiaswor flowy “mique” osmosed of siaw ee tend bsavolat ese “sont S4LT TASH iliw woy Tludn tdaia odd fo @hem ota vor -tiakmoons 9il to sLabit baw xeldyott of? oom hot} Jo ynlaesid of} aeflo al wiewvbA xigal -uisrg Wirievha to loodae sdT -oatuueib ai” ‘lonih to itd elt bre ,eligqgng tealds of] eat letiisad lotus gatmedtyyguette 10) teed adie ai siduons codw yottoid ao? cletiery vo St a svat ooy Jad) esaehiva me si 41 sol syey aluid beso wot ugmeiem wooy ot ute tdgit On feo cen tas). .taiseagia “wo goleveb of vd pao dolid epi Waint Moodtiw-ebam sd arom md wat toodltiw shat | is¥0 Yio bus tweb din nave ao Aoid fon off ? ‘qvoag tert “eaesd avad sitgier blo wog res ; of JMaos deed 1Hoy Ob ban soy of avmmon: wolisosy yaitd lotue (lw vé boa vd tad} Wom 3 .amod bas eyabliod gntbagnu orf? - sii Aetten jsews setwredto yuan wed “ave adil Ghoqeorg yl baltogs soy juoda Meas ise ent mi ssiqgs ois Beet: prs er ae rt 7 | a IT whine floor 97? to gale q our sot Nedtedaad rae evod Bet t ) aawot yaiioddyion dihw ferovon Feng now veri bra loodoe nwol sinod @ toynlg “ini2 Wo a Ota rh foes) AON DOG OL D Left to right—Bernadine Fetters, Mary Liss, Lucile Van Derbosch, Elvis Hoeffel, Evelyn Mansfield. OUR CLASS The Sophomore class of ’33 entered High School with eleven members and we enjoyed our Freshman year, but of course as you all know we were too smart to be called “Green Horned Freshmen.” We were all glad when we received our report cards saying we were Sophomores. Six of our class members returned for their Sophomore year, namely: Bernadine Fetter, Mary Liss, Elvis Hoeffel, Evelyn Mansfield, Ruth Sobasky and Lucille Van Derbosch. Our class has been very industrious this year. Evelyn is fond of Geometry, Elvis is fond of Latin, Mary is fond of History, Bernadine is fond of Eng- lish, especially debates, and Lucille is fond of Home Economics. We have been very busy going through Caesar’s Gallic Wars. Two of our members took part in the Senior Class Play. We are now looking forward to our Junior year. WE SOPHOMORES Freshmen were we as green as could be, Sophomores are we much brighter you see, Juniors we’re striving to be, happy and gay, Seniors we hope to be with knowledge to dis- play. Into those years you have crowded thousands of hours of study and countless efforts to prepare yourselves for the future. Into those years your teachers have put the finest service within their power, to fit you for the struggle of later years. Into those years have gone sacrifices and self-denial on the part of your parents, so that you might be- gin life with the proper equipment. Now you stand on the threshold of a new world of independent livelihood. You look out into the distance and try to see what lies before you. Some of you will go immediately into the world to make your living. This does not mean that your education will be completed. If your teachers have not spent their labors in vain, you will continue to develop your powers under the stress of life’s practical problems. In your struggle for success in the various fields into which you may enter, always remember the training you received at St. Joseph’s and the many kind admonitions of your zealous Pastor. Show your gratitude for that training by doing the noblest things you can in the noblest way possible. 0 SMILES PROUT U OMNISN ©... -cnscn essere eee A goofy smile PBYGy GC DEY oo... i eee A noisy smile PH EMEEING TY Oe o.- 22sec eee A serious smile MRA e te MIU ZAIO fo tence ee ee Seldom smiles PONE N OCUIVE!) oc: secseetoiaee All kinds of smiles Lucile Vanderbosch.......:....-..... QS LIFE The first thing that we read in Caesar’s Gal- lic Wars is that, “All Gaul is divided into three parts; one of which the Belgians inhabit, an- other the Aquitanians, and the third those who in their own language are called Celts, but in ours Gauls.” Now life is somewhat like Gaul, and to paraphrase Caeser, all life is divided into three parts; one of which the past inhabits, another the present, and the third, which is of itself most alluring, is called the future, Out of the past our lives have been formed, and like the strong castle of cement we put into our lives back there, all the elements that are so firm today. Now the cement of life is set, and we cannot undo the past. The chance is gone forever. We must turn away from it for it is futile to worry about the things we left un- done. Today, however, is a golden opportunity for building. All the things that make beautiful and strong lives we can reach. We can turn our attention to the task of mixing and building well today, for life is not built in a day but in years of careful effort. Then there remains tomorrow. It, of itself, is most alluring. It is called the future. After all, it is what we live for. We save today that we may spend tomorrow; we strive today that we may attain tomorrow; and it is in that bright tomorrow that we reach the joy of the wise and careful building of our lives today. 100 GAa B24498UG AYO a. a Ce OO Ow HEE OEE EE EEO OS OOS ‘ ’ xiiiovenl ; i ai mir i ton sig eee small Soi¥i ‘ 7 ’ ces baAé sali I ‘yrab av {teoT ; ay 40 idda . All ten little Freshies plucked together and decided that they would knuckle down and work very hard for a change. September 9 was the great day on which they merrily skipped into the classroom and greeted Sister M. Pascaline who is one of their teachers. She is very kind to all and for that reason all ten of them decided to do what they could to make life happy. Each one of these Freshies were initiated during October into the Booster Club of the school and they are striving and will strive to obey and uphold the rules during the rest of their time here so when the end of their school life dawns they may consider themselves, and be considered by others, a credit to their school.
