1 The papal seat was vacated twice during the year with the deaths of Pope Paul VI and his successor John Paul I. The election of Poland ' s Karol Wojtyla and his choice to take the name John Paul II was a surprise to all. 2 Popular model Cheryl Tiegs switched clothing and joined driver Janet Guthrie for a photo session at the Pocono International Raceway. 3 Three men from Arizona made the first successful flight across the Atlantic in a balloon, the Double Eagle II. 4 Iran ' s political turmoil resulted in the Shah’s downfall and the return of the Ayatollah Khomeini, a religious leader. 5 A jungle town in Guyana, South America became the setting for the bizarre poison drink deaths of over 900 followers of Jim Jones ' People’s Temple, and the shooting deaths of Congressman Leo Ryan and 3 newsmen, part of a group investigating them. 6 Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, together with President Carter and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat signed two agreements providing for negotiations of a full Middle East peace treaty at the Camp David Summit conducted in September. 7 In the country’s worst air disaster ever recorded, a PSA jet with 136 aboard, its right wing afire, plunges toward a San Diego residential neighborhood, after colliding with a small aircraft. 1978 . . . A parade of faces and events passing through the headlines TY-NINE Volume miniature world We enter It is a world that for four years (hopefully?) seems very real and important. 4 6 We strive hard to make our little community work. 13 IS “Life is the game that must be played: This truth, good friends, we know; So live and laugh, nor be dismayed as one by one the phantoms go.” — Edwin Robinson 16 SENIORS pg. 20 GAME I pg. 40 pg. 56 SPORTS Pg. 142 GRADUATION CONTENTS DORMS GAME 2 pg. 124 pg. no pg. 96 CLUBS pg. 146 FACULTY Dedication . . . This book is dedicated to Drexel Hall and the hundreds of individuals who lived and loved there . . . Although it may seem ironic to dedicate a book to a building, we feel it is appropriate for this yearbook Drexel Hall was the original Saint Joseph’s. It was built in 1888 to house an independent Indian boarding school. The rest of St. Joe’s grew up around Drexel administration felt it was economically unfeasible to keep it open. The remaining twenty or so “Drexelites” were quickly rehoused on campus . . . The closing of Drexel Hall is an example of the game of life. Once it was very important to St. Joe’s and today it no longer exists . . . Play the game and enjoy it. But when it is over . . . accept it and start a new game . . . This summer, the hall was closed because the 18 ST. JOSEPHS INDIAN NORMAL SCHOOL -1888-1896- Erected by the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions with funds from Katharine Drexel and operated by the Society of the Precious Blood with federal funds, 60 Indian boys from distant reservations were annually trained here. The hardest thing I remember about orientation was saying good-bye to my family and friends. Why did 1 have to go away to school? What was Saint Joe’s? . . . 42 Homecoming 1978 What is Homecoming? It’s weeks of long preparation, of floats being put together, and boxes of tissues fit for the stuffing. When it arrives, you hea r the familar sounds of “hey, did you see so so” or “is he back already?” The parade finishes at Saint Joe’s, and the game begins. Boy is it cold out! Game quickly passes by and it’s over. Homecoming 1978 is at last over. What’s the score? 46 This year’s parade included many colorful floats and people (like the S.A. and their Chinese fire drills?). First place in the float contest went to the Business Club’s “Spike”. Chap’s “Needle ' em” captured second place. The Phi Kappa Fraternity let whoever dared smash this heap for SI.00 (Heck, they do it to Craven’s car for nothing.) The BSU Homecoming Court. Elected queen this year was Veda Williams. The main goal of the class was to promote free enterprise and to get students involved with it. Students set up seminars, worked with certain Core classes, and informed St. Joseph’s College about SIFE. In April, Mary Kiefer, Steve Brouillette, and Cathy Kielbowski represented St. Joseph’s in regional competition with other colleges dealing with free enterprise. St. Joseph’s was recognized for accomplishing a great deal in its first year in the competition and Dr. Burkey, our advisor, received a plaque honoring St. Joseph’s College for promoting the free enterprise system. Good luck next year. 134 Spring Break Spring break at St. Joseph’s is a very special time. After many weeks of sleet, snow, and studying, students take off for “Fun in the Sun.” Many students this year before going South stopped off in Dayton, Ohio and watched the Puma basketball team in the regionals beat Eastern Illinois, and host Wright State in the finals 73-68 to advance to the final eight in Division II. From Russia With Love The group left Chicago aboard a SAS 747 bound for Copenhagen, Denmark. With a short stop in Stockholm, Sweden, the tour landed at Leningrad international in the U.S.S.R. For fifteen days, twenty-eight Pumas visited churches, museums, palaces, and parks. The opera, ballet, and circus were other stops, along with Lenin’s tomb, Gum department store, and four different Russian cities (Leningrad - Novgorod - Moscow - Kiev). After twenty departures and landings, all twenty-eight members of the group were glad to get back to the U.S. of A. The week off was just long enough to let us contemplate our life at St. Joe’s — and short enough to keep our memories alive.
