In The Beginning. . . 18 Everything is confusing. You are assigned a group and handed a schedule. You ask yourself “Why?” Why are you here and is it all worthwhile?. . .and then you meet a friend and by sharing your confusion you manage to straighten everything out. Before long, you’re calling this your home. 19 4 Monte Carlo Weekend “You just can’t trust anyone!” 22 23 Homecoming ’77 At last all the planning, hard work and anticipation give way to the excitement and pride of the day . . . the parade, the game, the queens and their courts, all the festivities of Homecoming. 24 Homecoming Court Front Row: Mara Pindell, Queen Irene Farrell and Dawn Feely. One weekend a year we break out the saddle shoes and bear grease and recreate the era we all long to have been a part of . . . and the world twists on. “Low”-lights I What made 1977 different from 1976? Or from any other year? On a discouraging day, you sometimes feel like there’s no way to mark the passage of time from one week to the next, especially when you’re surrounded by the endless Rensselaer cornfields. Throughout semester one, there were many small events that weren’t very “significant,” but that helped keep track of those fleeting days and caused us to say . . . “That was the weekend that . . or . . . “they were painting the water tower then . . . . “Core XI had just opened.”.“I had just seen that guy from the soap opera.”.“It was after the sop homore hay ride.” .“Gallagher was having the floor hockey marathon.” . . . . . . “Larry Garrett, the hypnotist, had just made believers of half the student body — well, at least Kent.”.or. . . “That was the day of fall follies Sports -T Baseball Puma Pride and Puma Power have always been the keys to our success in baseball. Hard work, determination and stamina provide our diamond athletes with just what they need to “fight for Saint Joe’s.” a , w 4 ' w v ■ • i 36 - -• . 4 3 - W at US? ■■ ■r ' it-. Fans watched the Puma cagers swish into action at the beginning of the season and continue a swift running and jumping, dunking and dribbling game to the last. There were some unique memories for the players — a flurry of game cancellations due to winter snowstorms and a four-night “vacation” spent stranded in a hotel conference room. And all of us will remember the plane crash that brought death to the Evansville team that always was a formidable rival. Downey shows how easy it is. f, ' fl . ■ , Jmmh II I k .«. W ' ’ §F .. Measure 117 Faculty - they’ve been called a lot of things by a lot of people: teachers, profs, slave-drivers . . . but whatever we call them, we’ve managed to build up a two-way relationship. The only truly complete teaching situation is one where both prof and puma teach as well as learn. Teaching at SJC is more than a job - it’s a belief, a concern, a type of love. Right: Rev. Two years later, in 1914, his brother, Father Rufus, joined him. Since then the two brothers have given over ninety years of their lives to SJC. Father Gilbert retired in 1976. He lives in Schwieterman Hall. His brother, Father Rufus, died September 30, 1977. After teaching fifty-one years, Father Rufus held the record of longevity in faculty service at SJC. It is to these two brothers, who cared so much for Saint Joseph’s and its students, that this book is dedicated. “I found the best way to motivate students was to show them I was myself enthusiastic about and interested in material for a given course. If you’re interested in what you teach, you can pass this interest along to students.” Father Rufus Esser, May, 1977 “I always reminded my students that they are on their way to the future and must keep their ultimate goals in mind. Today’s student is tomorrow’s professional, and college is a good indicator of what degree of success will follow later in life.” Father Gilbert Esser, May, 1977 172 Many Thanks . . .
