Even the defending NCAA Great Lakes Regional Basketball Champs couldn’t put it together long enough to finish above .500. The spring sports scene also left the ardent Puma fans little to cheer about. Baseball fell five games short of a winning season while the tennis and track teams suffered through a winless year. The lone bright spot was a young golf squad that improved rapidly and finished 6-5. Although the losses outnumbered the wins. Puma Spirit remained high with the cheerleading help of Marcel Fortman, Susan Dolecki, Linda Gelat- ka, Susan Smith, Jane Ellspermann, Rosalyn Ruda and Victoria Sugar. -i- “Pumas Couldn’t Be Denied ’ Says Jennings “When Chips Are Down We Bounce Back’’ 153 154 Front row, left to right: manager Bruce Litzenberg, Dennis Strobe], Dave Pelc, John Riley, Nick Hubalik, Tim Mingey, Mike Battrell, Tom Kane, Tom Corcoran, Jerry Coyle, Lee Meyer, student coach John Siegel. Keep the lines of communication open, involve more students. “If it is going to happen at S.J.C., it must start with the students.” Thus was the seed of campus life planted. Nurtured by the capable hands of the Student Association, (far right; Dennis Boyle, Vice-President; Robert Ne¬ ville, Secretary; Dr. Sleeman, Faculty Advisor; An¬ thony Vaccarello, Senate President; Fred Giel, Presi¬ dent; Edward Poropat, Treasurer) it grew, ever so slowly — Association Concert, mini-concerts, Mardi Gras, “Trash of the Thirties,’’ student representatives on the Board of Trustees, an active Student Senate — until it blossomed into the dorms — refrigerator rentals, open houses, dorm-sponsored parties, liber¬ alized drinking policies. What we now have are the beginnings of a strong family tree. fepStiAtU ■ ' i Sob Mulderrig, College Republicans Chairman Robert Neumaier, Political Science Club Treasurer, YD John £ onO rski, YD Joseph Ait, College Republicans Treasurer ; . What they all need is a reservoir of reflection. Phase ' 71 is that reservoir of reflection, that mirror of moods. At this time we would like to commit to memory the names of five individuals who in their own special way have influ¬ enced the growth of our campus community: Reverend Joseph Hiller, C.PP.S., Professor Emeritus of German; Walter Voica; Jill Jaskolka; Pat Brown; and Bill Knight. To most of us they were five nameless faces in a multi-faceted crowd. To those who knew them well, the pain echoed by their loss is great. But the rivers of life continue flowing, never stopping, only pausing, to be observed and remem¬ bered. Acknowledgements: Our gratitude is extended to our News Bureau Director and Advisor Chuck Schuttrow, for his pa¬ tience and guidance; to his wife Delores; to Taylor yearbook representative Jim Bell; to Denny Lavery for his assistance and to those who have offered suggestions or constructively criticized existing ideas.
