A Year Of Commitment The community of Saint Joseph ' s College has committed itself this year to the ideals of Catholic living and scholarship. The students have established an effective repre¬ sentative government in the Student Senate. The faculty have reaffirmed their ded¬ ication to Catholic education after an evaluation of the school as a liberal arts col¬ lege. With proposed residential co-education, the President ' s Seminars, and curricu¬ lum revision, the college has ventured into new dimensions of community growth. It is a record of these events, these commitments, and the total scope of life at Saint Joseph ' s that the 1968 PHASE offers. This volume is dedicated to the ideals which the college community has reaffirmed this year, and to those members of the com¬ munity, students, faculty, and administration, whose continuing faith and devotion to these ideals promises growth and improvement in all sectors of the college ' s activ¬ ities. Through the internal growth of Saint Joseph ' s, as these commitments are manifested in the conscientious actions of the community, the college will develop the complete person for the twentieth century. So PHASE dedicates this volume to the fulfillment of this commitment in years to come. If time passed like rainy days, and if today there remains not a puddle trapped at the curb, and the ground is dry and the sky clear, you will wonder where the time went. Within we have enclosed one year. Find here the rooms and the halls where you once came looking for higher education and found it; find yourself and remember what you were thinking and what your struggles were, and remember the funny things that happened that you thought you wouldn ' t ever forget; find enclosed some famil¬ iar and some forgotten faces of people who shared with you one now-evaporated Saint Joseph ' s College year— ' 67- ' 68. With an ear for the students and an ear for the world, plus a great amount of creativity on its own part, the administration guides the school toward the I970 ' s—a world promising to provide great challenge. Gathered beneath the pillars and roof are men dedicated to learning and to teaching what they have learned. For these men education is experience—the productive passing of the waking hours concerned with bringing the world into focus for themselves and then helping others to do so. At every turn these men are attentive to the improved methods of education, and it is this looking for¬ ward that provides direction for the momentum of the scholarly community. At graduation time, the students depart from the community, taking with them what they have learned into a world where learning can never cease. • « £ ' ♦Ml ’ ■ mlr + iB ■ m i He first came to Saint Joseph ' s in 1941-43. After his studies at Saint Charles Seminary, he returned to the college in 1949 and was appointed Assistant Librarian in 1950. He became Head Li¬ brarian in 1952 and was named Executive Assistant to the Presi¬ dent in September of 1964. He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, the nat ional scholastic honor society, and Beta Phi Mu, the national library science honorary fraternity. Father Charles H. Banet, C.PP.S., has been President of Saint Joseph ' s since June of 1965. Father Banet, who is Second Con- suitor of the Cincinnati Province of the Society of the Precious Blood, is a 45-year-old native of Fort Wayne, Ind. He was edu¬ cated at Saint Charles Seminary, Carthagena, Ohio, from 1943- 49 and was ordained in 1949. He received his bachelor ' s degree at Saint Joseph ' s in 1950 and a Master ' s degree in Library Sci¬ ence from the University of Michigan in 1951. Since his appointment as President of Saint Joseph ' s College, Father Banet has been the inspiration behind many innovations on the Collegeville campus, latest of these being a concentrated effort in the vital area of curriculum revision. Nearing completion is a new dormitory, planned to house approximately 250 stu¬ dents, half of whom will be Saint Joseph ' s first residential coeds in September, 1968. The fostering of our academic community represents the heart of his task as Father Banet steers the col¬ lege through the challenging years ahead. The processions, the mass, the ceremonies in the fieldhouse. Four years, you kept thinking. Over. There were the short polite conversations with faces you almost got to know once. The handshakes with familiar smiles of friendships that were just begun. These four years that began perhaps a minute ago, with the beany bit and the bib bit—memorize the names of halls, know the school song, drown the Puma police— these four years, and with them professors you want to be sure to remember and a girl or two from a sometime college mixer that you wrote to once after—they were over, those four years, and with them successes and failures important to you be¬ cause they were your own. The four years were over, and to confirm it they handed you what you had been working for and you found out what it looks like and you put it under your arm and held on to it tightly. And in the final procession you walked out with your class, knowing by the weight in your hand that it was over—how did college go so fast?— and you glanced around at the faces you know, which were also glancing around, and you wondered what graduates always wonder (especially in 1968): what will happen now? Father Banet congratulates his sister upon her graduation. • -V • .- ' - • few- f - ■ . ' 8m mmm WfrLkiMM . mm 1 ? ' STUDENT ORGANIZA Discipline—the foremost principle stressed in all institutions of higher learning—is incorporated at Saint Joseph ' s College in its student organizations. These organizations can be cate¬ gorized into three major types: organizations of communica¬ tions, administration, and participation. Communication takes on many different aspects. It includes Stuff, the student news¬ paper, Phase, the annual yearbook, Measure, the literary mag¬ azine, and, of course, one of our latest additions, WOWI, the campus radio station. Administration consists of the Student Association which acts as our student government. The estab¬ lishment of a student senate was a first at Saint Joe ' s. This sen¬ ate gives every hall on campus a representative voice in the association. Along with this are our class officers and the vari¬ ous committees which give our government unity. Finally, par¬ ticipation includes our many excellent clubs—social and aca¬ demic. Many students take advantage of these clubs in an ef¬ fort to prepare for the years following graduation. 40 Paul Kiffner Vice President, Student Association Student Timothy Raykovich President, Student Association Association Officers Michael Organ Treasurer, Student Association Paul O ' Brien Secretary, Student Association 42 Sports Information Charles J. Their strivings take the form of many different events—both socially and academically. Socially, the Student Association filled the concert weekends with both ' girls and top-flight musical groups ranging from the smooth sounds of the Lettermen to the folksy Spanky and Our Gang, to the psychedelic Strawberry Alarm Clock, to the Mo-Town sound of the Detroit Wheels. Mixers were not everything, however, in the social sched¬ uling of the Student Association, as well-attended dances regular¬ ly appeared on the calendar. Like the concerts, these dances va¬ ried from the wild costumed Mardi Gras to the conservative Prom and Frosh-Soph dances. Academically, many lectures were presented. DeGaulle, Black Power, marriage, Hugh Hefner ' s Playboy Philosophy and Zen Buddhism were some of the topics touched. Saint Joseph ' s did not stop there with academics, how¬ ever. Foreign film festivals spiced up the academic life of the Joe- man when the goings slowed. vW‘; Spanky And Our Gang Concerts Strawberry Alarm Clock Detroit Wheels Jamey Aebersold Lectures I . JO ) ' ii-. ! S ' Masses In “The Upper Room” IV n Climaxing the year ' s social life for freshmen and sophomores was this spring ' s annual Frosh-Soph Weekend. Keynoting the events was the weekend ' s theme, Barefoot in the Park. The couples par¬ ticipated in a full schedule of activities, including three dances, a picnic, a hayride and a mixer. The affair culminated a busy year for the underclassmen and helped usher in spring at Collegeville. Freshman-Sophomore Weekend 84 1968 Junior-Senior Prom Weekend 86 In the springtime the prom comes up quick¬ ly—and the night before that night is Rev¬ els, a chance to let go a little. It ' s loud that night, because this dance is designed to move; and what you remember of it later is a vibrating visual collage of flash¬ ing color, and the glimmering motion of the band which hypnotically pounds the Raleigh Room into everywhere. The eve¬ ning of Revels is one of mind clearing, book forgetting and sitting somewhere with your girl—a proper setting of the scene for the night that follows. X- -r . m s The prom: what can be said? It is an elegant, a friendly, and a beautiful affair. The evening begins. The sun is down. There is champagne and a banquet, and then the quiet and warm entertainment of Miss Anna Maria Alberghetti. The scene changes to the gentle glimmer of the ball¬ room, the right music, the right mood, the friends, the professors, the important per¬ son at your side—the gentle and proper passing of some long-awaited springtime hours. ' J ■ : -v- V.-: f , : ‘y 88 STUDENT PARTK Each student has a chance to learn the funda¬ mentals and Intricacies of athletics through var¬ sity and Intramural competition. Varsity play is pitted primarily against other teams in the In¬ diana Collegiate Conference while intramurals pit hall against hall. Both levels of athletics prove equally challenging to the participants. While the varsity competes against such notables as University of Dayton, Southern Illinois Univer¬ sity and Notre Dame, the intramural teams battle Xavier ' s Mongies, Noll ' s Truckers and Whitehouse ' s Bear ' s Boys. m 11 m|| w J i 1 -w ' ■ r ' - W Mm- ... . It ' s when a club short on experience with two seniors and long on spirit with I I soph¬ omores and juniors band together to carve out nine victories in a demanding schedule that included ten games with teams invited to post-season tournaments. We don ' t have that many individual stars, noted head coach Jim Holstein, and we ' ve got to play as a team in every sense of the term. The message was clear and strong to the Pumas, as 13 cagers add¬ ed spark to the Saints ' attack. Guards Ted Hillary and Chuck Lamm pro¬ vided much of the scoring power and were rewarded with all-conference honors, while most valuable player Dennis Potts and Steve Scharf joined with center Frank Pohl- geers to give the Collegeville crew re¬ bounding power and more points on the front line. Big men John McGladdery and Bill Weliky spelled Pohlgeers in the pivot while backcourt reserves Bill Conwell and Mark Hurtubise lifted the team with pat¬ ented scoring bursts. Forwards Tom Gross, Bob Seggerson, Dan Ellis and Jim Nicol- letta gave Holstein the depth and firepow¬ er that turned the close contests into vic¬ tory. Our wins were team wins, summarized Holstein. The 1967-68 season was, above all, a team effort. You couldn ' t say it any better than that. 102 Left to right, front row: head trainer Peter Hocker, Mark Hurtubise, Ted Hillary, Steve Scharf, Dennis Potts, Jim Nicolletta, Bill Conwell, Chuck Lamm, and student assistant Fred Caito. Throughout the year, halls are organizing teams, and individuals are signing up for personal honors. 113 - jjM jd EBIL mk ' . One of the biggest crowds of the year gathered to see the entries huff and puff their way around the old science building. An attempt to change the course for this two-and-a-half hour spring road classic failed in the Student Senate. Tradition was maintained. And after the race was over, another tradition (or, near-tradition) was followed. The seminarians from Xavier Hall were victorious. STUDENT SITUATION ui The time-worn question— What constitutes a good institution? —has, throughout the years, provoked many different answers. At Saint Joseph ' s College, the question is answered with one word—students. The students at SJC build and mold their college through their various activities and achievements. Throughout PHASE are candid photographs of stu¬ dents: sometimes solemn, sometimes serene, but in all cases, displaying an ecstatic disposition. Every mood at Saint Joe ' s plays a certain role whether this mood be the sorrows of a defeat or the ecstasy of a success either on tests or in athletics. isr • ' ♦ ' ’ ! Fenner, Ph.D. 1937 — 1968 o 191 This page belongs to all those who worked so hard in the improvement, as well as production, of this book ... Charlie Schuttrow, Jim Bell, Curtis Thatcher, and the fine staff of students. Charlie, the man of many jobs, raised the journalistic competence of the book with his timely hints and professional know-how. He even taught us the beauty of a sunrise at 5 A.M. i Jim, Taylor ' s representative, literally gave us new life the second semester. From him we learned some of the little aids that add up and make a good book. Curtis, the professional photographer, gave us pictures of a quality seldom seen in past publications. He became a friend to be counted upon whenever needed. To the students, I cannot properly express my gratitude and pride. On many occasions our students have been accused of apathy. While many of our students deserve this adjective, you do not. You had the drive for improvement not often found here. PHASE ' 68 would be nothing without your work and dedication. The book comes from you, the acceptance must come from your classmates.
