PHASE ’66 saint joseph’s college J fv. ' W . tik. • ft, j v 4 !!!CZir  ' 4f . ' , % - ' ■_ _■- -j§ Phase is a study of the joy, the pain and the boredom of the individual of Saint Joseph ' s College groping to form his mind in the wonder, awe and mystery of the intellectual acumen of the centuries. It is a chronicle of his laughing and his groaning, of his praying and his doubting, of his screaming and his whispering, of his struggling and his submitting, of his living. Multiplicity flows from unity and by the many instances of the emotion, expression, and the activity of the persons we try to give you the life of the people, in Phase 1966. PHASE ONE . . . silver letters on red brick— Saint Joseph ' s College—turn right . . . The road leads to discernment, satisfaction and sometimes to silent prayer that ambitions will culminate in fruition. Student energies are plodding to that final departing day, each feeling along the way the grinding ruts and bumps of college existence. Saint Joseph ' s is like any other college in most respects . . . the trip back is long for some and short for others, but eventually the tollway and Route 41 are left behind and Indiana 114 stretches out the last few miles to Collegeville, hanging to Rensselaer by the thread of tree-lined Route 53. Here Phase One begins . . . Sept ember 15, 1965. RENSSELAER CITY LIMIT TwUrfiM  A 5 vft ' ■i-V, Forms upon forms, one for the business office, one for the registrar, one for the draft, pencil chewing and receipt folding, dragging suitcases and cardboard boxes, tennis rackets and pillows. Students crouch over tables with pens scribbling through disorganized patches of paper—perplexed faces tanned by sun of those short summer months. Two semesters of paraphernalia moved from trunks and backseats to bunks and drawers and dusty shelves. Then evening Mass and the President ' s welcome culminate a beginning. Reverend Charles H. Banet, President. 6 The color, so much more vibrant for the years of gray, the fighting spirit, so much more exciting for the years of resignation, filled a gridiron transformed by the drive and enthusiasm of one Jim Arneberg. After DePauw, a game with a familiar score but an unusual tenor, we said, At least, it was different, or, He ' s got nothing to lose. But most of us just smiled a bit within and said, Maybe, or I hope so. After Butler, Tony Hi nkle said, You won ' t lose another game, and we started to Hate State. Animosity reigned and the New Breed kindled the flame rousing energy and expectation. Revenge was never so sweet and the drought was spelled by the waters of victory as the Sycamores were felled. Five thousand of us cheered at a bright, laughing Homecoming as Duffy pawed over the Yellow- jackets and a week later Arnie ' s Army returned by the hundreds from a soggy and vanquished Valpo. The taste of victory only made the ensuing defeats more bitter as we slipped under Evansville and Ball State and were snowed at Findlay. But the Puma has tasted blood and many years will pass before he loses the scent of victory. I 10 HOMECOMING It was a beautiful setting, for Autumn had painted the college campus with bright combinations of red, orange, yellow and brown. The surging Pumas hungrily stalked victory and then consumed it for the second week in a row as proud Defiance fell before its sharpened claws. Saturday night ' s dance pleasantly rounded a weekend of festive activities, which had begun the night before with the bonfire and Senior hayride and reached its height during Saturday ' s halftime ceremonies with the crowning of the 1965 Homecoming Queen, Miss Diane Brudzien. 12 Thought and anxiety characterize bench. Trough gives ref helping hands. 18 m ■A game of inches. Coach Arneberg. 19 Someday JUDY COLLINS I am a maid of constant sorrow. I ' ve seen trouble all of my days. She performed in the fieldhouse one Sunday afternoon to add the final touch to a success¬ ful mixer weekend. The second big-name per¬ former in Dale Fallat ' s Student Council Con¬ cert Series, Judy charmed the audience with a clear, vibrant voice and a flawless guitar. Dr. William Sturm, Current Trends on British Thought. Authorities in search of an audience— hopefully an audience of young, interested, open minds—travel the world. British philosophy and its current trends, the war raging in Viet Nam, the plight of the Northern Negro, and the magic of music all add to the mood, the drive, and the direction of college existence. Tran Van Dinh, the Viet Nam situation. Dr. Jude Dougherty, Recent American Naturalism. 24 Illinois Symphony Orchestra. Robert Lucas, Problems of Negroes in the North. Professor F. Lee Benns. 25 A car accident and a knee operation slowed down a basketball machine aimed at upsets. We played some of the best in the country. Half of our op¬ ponents went to post season tournaments. Yet, despite a losing season, 38 school records were broken in a melee of offensive finesse, including, total points scored at home—951, and highest score in an individual game—117. Tom Crowley joined the elite 1000 point club. Broussard broke several records. Still hit 78 of 149 shots for a record .523 from the floor. Farley sunk a record 561 2% of his shots in 13 road games. Carl Bos- sung scored 21 points for a career high in the last game of the season to the delight of his Fan Club. And, Terry Davisson rammed and elbowed his way to a record 92 personal fouls. 27 Students, too, clamor for intellectual recognition and the give and take of heated debate and discussion. They yearn for the acclaim heaped on the successful performance of drama and music. When they suc¬ ceed they are encouraged to continue, and when they fail, they can mature. Vince Taranto. Mock US Senate sponsored by the History Club. 29 E . EWti E tlll tHt ' u nnu Mock New Years Eve Dance. ■mm r Dale Stewart—victorious exhaustion. Bru—the man with the moves. Crowley hands make good defense. 32 aa An unseasonably warm Sunday afternoon and five hundred plus girls set the stage for one of the most enjoyable concerts given at Saint Joseph ' s College. Overcoming a scream¬ ing mike, Peter Nero and his drum and bass fiddle accompanists combined professional talent at its best with vibrant personality in performing an array of musical selec¬ tions that offered something for everyone. •-S Jim Still Exams, term papers, the fight for good grades, the pressure to succeed. At times, one must stop for a moment and find solitude for thought and prayer. Daily mass, retreats and personal, sincere counseling provide the opportunity for spiritual development and a chance to become a fuller, richer person anxious to become part of tomorrow ' s world. 38 Devoted and dedicated, the professor is the immediate bridge to understanding and knowledge. Rather than just a source of information, he is an accumulation of a lifetime of knowledge, sensitive and responsive to the inquiries of his students. In or out of the classroom, his vital information and probing questions create an atmosphere in which students can search and discover direction for their own lives. He is not only a professor, though. He is also a priest, performing his duties in the service of God, or a scientist, exploring a world unknown to most people. Amid the hustle of a teaching day, he continues his own drive for improvement behind closed doors in seclusion, where true dedication is found. Around him Saint Joseph ' s College is built; through him it moves. ttettE K  • 1 m rmrcrffu. _ TT The search for an education is a retreat, a prolonged and sometimes exhaustively tiring period of intensive thought. The search leads through endless library stacks and into lonely, secluded corners cluttered with textbooks, ancient typewriters, and half-completed term papers. Yet in spring, warrrr breezy havens under a blue sky or rustling leaves bring memories of finer hours. All this is but atmosphere for the retreat, for the search for an individual ' s choice of a vocation—for a lifetime. 45 A student ' s life is not all tedium and tireless effort. The favorite pastime of most Pumas is the fine art of racking it. There is no doubt that the rack forms an integral part of the physical development of a well- rounded St. Joe man. When the need to catch a few zzz ' s reaches marginal utility many other exciting activities await the student—reading bulletin boards, mutilating philosophy books, enjoying the exquisite cuisine served at our two cafeterias, fighting for a telephone, or that most exhilarating game of all—laughing at Organic Chemistry. 1 extbook r of Crgamc Chemistry 47 50 54 LITTLE 500 A cloudy sky covered an already rain soaked Pumaville as last minute preparations were being made for the race. The mud holes and slippery pavement did not dampen the enthusiastic spirits which created one of the most hotly contested races in the short history of the Little 500. From the classic opening scramble to the cars to the last desperate plunge across the finish line, muscles that usually can ' t be found began to stretch and strain around the Science building and through the Appian Way with a reckless abandon that usually resulted in wrecked cars or muddy faces. The building of the cars, the planning and physical exhaustion resulted in only one winner but, by the end of the race, the simple things in life like a relaxing cigarette or a handy bucket seemed most satisfying. The scorers ' table. 56 Saturday night at the annual Freshmen- Sophomore dance. Cast from dangling branches and tall silver-strung trees was an atmosphere that held a small but congenial group of couples spellbound. From the tables around the edge we walked past those silvery trees to the dance floor concealed in the middle and swung to the band in our own little world. For the underclassmen a weekend of gala activities was climaxed in the ballroom on 58 Friday night the Raleigh Room was a darkened, smoke-filled cauldron, reverberating the echoes of a loud Revels ' band. In many flowed the warm glow of friendship which generated an enthusiasm in all that lended the night to an Old Town discotheque. And amid the gyrating couples was the patient presence of the friendly priest with an open eye on a new generation. Another dance, another cigarette, another friend and still another night to go and another Junior-Senior Prom, but perhaps that coming night was your night. One Night in a Thousand. 60 Inclement weather came with the day of the prom, but in the afternoon four Hagist touchdown passes compensated the lack of sunshine as the alumni fell to the varsity in the unpredictable Arneberg style. One Night in a Thousand opened with champagne, filet, and light-headed but engaging conversation. Then came the trek to the Arabian tent up Halleck stairs past the stone-bedded stream that trickled to a purple pool at the bottom of grass-banked falls. The tent doorway opened to the ballroom with its red, blue and green lighted ceiling that resembled a makeshift old cargo parachute. A coat of arms, a gas lantern and a magic lamp provided a perfect setting for the fine music of the Glenn Miller orchestra and the makings of happy couples. This was one night in a thousand. 62 The 1966 graduate logged an unusual diary of events at the end of his undergraduate road. There were the storms of ' 63, the student boycott in the Spring of ' 64, a winless football season, the talk of dropping football from the school curriculum and the student veto, the defeat of the Cincinnati Bearcats in basketball in the Spring of ' 65 , a new football coach, a new college president, the talk of going coed and watching it slowly occur, and the unsolved stealing of the 350,000 dollar Giovanni Bellini painting from the college library. But these events and many more were but small, chronological reference points hardly marking the new ideas and thoughts that were learned and developed up to the journey ' s end on June 5, 1966. Peter Kennedy. ■■The lenses of PHASE now open wider to take in not only the individual in his solitude but the person in his environment—an environment of society. Groups, clubs, departments, cliques and organizations now come into focus, as the individual steps aside for a fuller view of the college. PHASE TWO presents the administration in its offices, the faculty in its departments, and the student body in its organizations. Here are the personnel of the previous and eventful PHASE ONE. This year the student body was the onlooker and the administration was the viewed, as for the first time Father Charles Banet assumed the Presidency of Saint Joseph ' s College after the retirement of Father Raphael Gross. From the start the pressure was on as the office learned that being good administrators not only required leadership but also the art of sleuthing, when the mystery of the missing Bellini erupted on campus to be followed by a weekend bomb scare. 72 With the passing of these unsolved cases, excitement led to quiet fortitude as preparations began for the forthcoming President ' s Dinner. Meanwhile, a national award came to a young and ambitious news bureau, the news of the ultra-modern men ' s dormitory and new business office computers spread throughout campus and the Indiana rock garden between Noll and Gallagher Halls finally became reality. The end of the year came at last and it appeared that the curious onlookers were breathing sighs of relief as a new administration seemed welded by some common Sword of Damocles that would lead them in the direction of our forward generation. The Individuals gave Saint Joseph ' s College its identification. Indiana State knew who we were when our hungry football team satisfied its lust with a home game victory. Valpo knew who we were when a New Breed proved a Puma is quicker than a Crusader by dashing off with their victory bell (only the Indiana State Police could stop the stride of the great purple cat). Evansville, Ball State, and Butler knew who we were when our red-clad basketball boys invaded their fieldhouses. Yet the Puma was not always a rabble-rouser, for he belonged to Digamma Kappa Lambda, the Society for the Advancement of Management, the Glee Club or to the Debate Team. And he took an active part in school politics, student publications or in school social events. The following section recaps the individual man as the body he composed during the 1965-1966 school year. • . ■JOHN O ' DONNELL B.A. English Chesterton, Ind. Class President JAMES METZINGER B.S.
