While the situation may be welcomed by some, being especially conducive to study, others may have their minds affected by the detachment. It also may be noted that in extreme cases where individuals have endeavored to spend an entire year within the confines of the college gates, marked changes in their physical char¬ acteristics have occurred. 16 The president of the college, Fr. The story told in this picture reasonably sums up the entire 1963 season, because Ryan ' s touchdown did not count. It was a season of injuries, record high temperatures, and six defeats on the road. But it also had its high- water marks. The Pumas won two of their three home games in come -from-behind victories over arch-rivals Val¬ paraiso and DePauw. Rich Ostrowski established a conference record with a 35-yard field goal against DePauw only to set the stage for Ron Boguski ' s record shattering 48-yarder fifteen minutes later. The team doubled its passing record over 1962, but failed to score a touchdown pass. The loss of only eight seniors has eyebrows raised for 1964 but the likes of Gugliotta, Schreiber, Boguski, Isselhard, Ostrowski, and An¬ derson (all 3-time letter winners) will be sorely missed. 38 Zhe „Athletic Staff Mr. Richard Scharf, Athletic Director; Mr. Donald Merki, Head Baseball Coach; Mr. James Holstein, Mr. Edward Bara, Assistant Football Coach; Mr. Edward Dwyer, Head Football Coach; Mr. James Betz, Head Basketball Coach; Assistant Football Coach. Senior Ron Boguski retires triumphantly from our grid after the DePauw victory. He had just booted a 40-yard field goal in the final four seconds to beat the Tigers 9-6. Wisconsin Tom Sager, 32, only senior on this year ' s team, helps Larry Yeagley, 30, and Bob Mokros, 22, retrieve the ball after a stray Wheaton shot. This time it ' s all sophs ganging up on Wabash. Tom Crowley, 4, a swift and smooth sophomore guard, lays one in as Wheaton ' s defenders watch helplessly. Jor Success Shooting I Lonnie Brunswick, 34, Most Valuable Player and scoring leader of I this year ' s Pumas, strains to dump in two points from in close. A young and untried team took the St. Joe banner into battle during the 1963-1964 basketball campaign. They came out scarred and beaten fif¬ teen times in twenty-three tries, but they came out wiser and more mature in the ways of the game. Tom Sager, the only Senior on this year ' s team, did an admirable job when his chance came, but even his basketball knowledge could not get the team through some of the tight spots during the season. This was a spirited, fighting team that showed great desire. They never let down. However, it was a season for lumps and learning. Larry Yeagley soars high in the air to stuff one. Coach words boys. Holstein gives some kind of encouragement to his K. PAUL ZOSEL, Jr. Des Moines, Iowa JOHN CROWLEY, Jr. Chicago, Illinois Tom Crowley, 4, and Paul Zosel, 20, followed Brunswick in the scoring department. Crowley led in assists and made the honorable mention all-ICC team, while Zosel led in rebounds. Here, Wheaton and St. Cloud St. get a taste of the results of the Crowley-Zosel combination. Two front-liners, Lonnie Brunswick, 34, and Larry Yeagley, 30, won ' t believe you if you contend that basketball isn ' t a contact sport. The going gets rough under those boards! Terry Davisson, 42 (on the floor), Paul Zosel, 20, and Larry Yeagley, 30, leave Wabash players on the outside looking in. Roommates Tom Crowley, 4, and Carl Bossung, 12, team up in a scramble for the ball against Marian. These four sophomores want that ball! Carl Bossung, 12, Terry Davisson, 42, Bob Mokros, 22, and Tom Crowley, 4, rush together and a Wabash player gets squashed. Paul Zosel, 20, and Carl Bossung, 12, assist Larry Yeagley, 30, in another scramble here and the Pumas get this one, too. 54 Puma jumping-jack Larry Yeagley, 30, soars for an easy basket against St. Cloud State. Always in the thick of the action is Terry Davisson, 42. is fighting with Indiana State players. Here he Nifty Ken Dockus, 44, displays his style with a pretty left-handed A quick shovel pass from Carl Bossung, 12, results in two points reverse lay-up. Kneeling: Kevin Porrath, Jerry Wilder, Joe Thompson, Don Tammen, and Jim Klein. The very popular, as well as talented, Lonnie ' Country ' Brunswick was voted the Most Valuable Player award by his teammates this year. He led the team in scoring and in field goal percentage. His great desire showed in practice and in games. Hats off to this Burkettsville star! 56 Mewling bophomore Jim a perfect strike. A Visit Daily Low Mass j Centrally located on St. Joseph ' s Campus Is a wooded retreat commonly labelled— T 1 THE GROTTO. The brother ' s life is a life of dedication to God through prayer and work. CPafron of CSroihi ers 171 Brother James Brown is a full-time student studying for his degree in mathe¬ matics. Brother Philip Buhrman is both a part-time student and of the college ' s processing and printing office. head Brother John Kreuzhermes works on the college farm raising turkeys, chickens, and swine to keep our tables well supplied. Brother Joseph Mary Herzo works as an assistant in the College Infirmary. Brother Paul Werling makes sure that the college cars are always in tip-top shape. All four seasons witness Brother Fidelis Bauer beautifying the college landscape. ■■■ Brother Conrad Lemanski is daily occupied with tailoring new, and mending torn clothes of St. Joseph Community members. Being a sophomore hall director provides some experience for Brother Gerard Von Hagel ' s duties as an assistant to the Dean of Men. Brother John Marling teaches mathematics and physics, in addition to being a freshman hall director. Shown here testing various wax samples is Brother Alphonse Staab, head of the college ' s janitorial maintenance. The maintenance of the Power house is under the super¬ vision of Brother Francis Werling. Here he is shown sharpening his tools. Able assistant to the Dean of Men is Brother Lawrence Convery. A major portion of Brother Joseph Minch ' s time is spent in his duties as a college electrician. , In addi¬ tion to bicycling, horseback rid¬ ing, taping, paint¬ ing, and other sports, the brothers can enjoy many different types of recreation such as listening to records, or TV, or relaxing after a day ' s work. All type of work is Brother Henry Luke ' s specialty. Though he normally is occupied with the lawn, he is shown here tidy¬ ing up the recreation room. Dwelling in Xavier Hall at the southern tip of St. Joseph ' s Campus are fifty-five seminarians in their first two years of college life. As with all youth, interests are diverse and var¬ ied, but essentially the goal of these young men remains the same—the Priesthood in the Society of the Pre¬ cious Blood. ! :mh i Mike Gude Mark Miller ■ Gjy Goubeai Throughout the many years of sem¬ inary curriculum, manual labor plays a distinct and important role in the formation of the future priest. Gee St floe’s It is a well known fact that every class has a couple of fellows who, although they are always around when there is work to be done and contrib¬ ute greatly to the welfare of the whole class, re¬ ceive very little recognition.
