These are the exits of our past . . . We stand now before the entrances of today and tomorrow and hesitate only to borrow the strength to play against the remaining doors, and the last. This is the strength we store as we pass through the Carpenter ' s door . . . 5 HALLECK CENTER 6 A campus view from Halleck Center (left, I. to r.) The very Rev. John E. HOMECOMING - 1962 S.J.C., 6 BUTLER, O. m The caption on the left reads S.J.C. , 6 — BUTLER 0, but that caption did not make a season. It helped to be sure but the 1962 Puma team did more than beat Butler on a rainy Homecoming day. Tough Hillsdale and Central State teams combined to give the Pumas many aches and pains before SJC could meet Valparaiso. However, a fresh and spirited group routed Valpo late in September and went on to scare the life out of I.C.C. hopefuls until the physical strain mutilated a thin squad. Lack of depth spelled defeat but an abundance of spirit achieved four big victories and a successful season for St. Joseph ' s. Senior Half-back, Donald Bian, ( 26), breaks away in the SJC victory over Evansville. S Senior end David O ' Connor Honorable mention 1962 All I.C.C. Does it take a good record? At times St. Joe fans seem to think so, but down deep the Puma fan likes his team, likes his players, likes the coaches, and hates the opposing team. If an occasional or even fre¬ quent ' hiss ' is aimed at a SJC player it is not because the guy in the stands thinks he can do a better job, but because he hates to lose. But if a fan hates to lose, think of the play¬ er. The 11 — 12 record was a disappointment to the players because guys like Art Voellinger, George Post, Bill Braunbeck, and Ken Dockus, and all the others had tried so hard to win. Records, alone, do not always measure suc¬ cess. THE TEAM WAS GOOD. LEWIS June, 1963 • ■. G.R. SCHREIBER January, 1963 On May 23, 1963, Father Aloys H. Feldhaus, C.PP.S. died after forty years in the service of God. Father Feldhaus was born in Louisville, Ky. on August 11, 1896 and became an ordained priest in the Congregation of the Precious Blood in 1923. In 1927 he received the degree of Doctor of Canon Law (J.C.D.) from Catholic University, Wash¬ ington, D.C. From 1927 to 1951 Father Feldhaus taught at Saint Charles Seminary at Carthagena, Ohio and then served for two years at Saint Agnes Convent in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. In 1953 he was transferred to Notre Dame Convent, Milwaukee, Wis¬ consin. He arrived at Saint Joseph ' s College in 1954 where he taught courses in Christian Morality and the Sacred Liturgy. Prior to his death on Ascension Thursday, Father Feldhaus completed an article on Oratories for the New Catholic Encyclopedia. Both the Faculty and the Student Body of Saint Joseph ' s mourn the loss of a dedicated priest, a competent teacher, and a true friend of the College. Requiescat in Pace! 198 BMMMI The closing of the school year is marked by the death of Pope John XXIII on June 3, 1963. The Holy Father, friend of all nations endeared himself not only to all Christendom but to the entire world in the five years of his reign. At the age of 76 he left behind him two major encyclicals, Mater Et Magistra and Pacem in Terris, as ex¬ amples of his all-encompassing love for humanity and his deep desire to insure the basic dignity and the freedom of the individual. Pope John also willed to the world an enormous undertaking, the second Vatican Ecumenical Council, which stands as a mile¬ stone on the road to a religious unity which is not bounded by belief or geography. Albert Cardinal Meyer, Archbishop of the Diocese of Chicago, has said that Pope John, when speaking of Pope Pius X, un¬ wittingly wrote his own eulogy,- In him people behold that rare combination of all the desirable traits possessed by each social class. He is genuine like a true peasant; he is honest and strong, like one of our own factory workers; he has the true patience of the seaman; he is calm as a shepherd; he is well-bred and austere as the descendants of the noblest families in the land; he is benign and courteous as a teacher or judge; he is good and generous as we imagined the saints to be.
