Volz. Mr. Volz lost his life on June 12, 1961, following a one car accident near Rensselaer. Born on July 13, 1931, he was the son of Rudolf L. Volz, Sr., and Elsie Volz. He married Miss Elizabeth Geanne Zollinger in Louisville, Kentucky on September 2, 1954. Mr. Volz graduated from Louisville’s Flaget High School in 1949 and entered Saint Joseph’s College the following September. He graduated from Saint Joseph’s in 1953 and after spending two years in the army attended graduate school at the University of Louisville. He then became alumni director and assistant admissions counselor at Saint Joseph’s College. A winner of 11 varsity letters during his student years at St. Joseph’s, Mr. Scharf has served as head football, baseball, and basketball coach. He is chairman of the St. Joseph’s physical education department and a doctoral candidate at Indiana University. A husky, determined man met the Pumas as new head football coach this year. The man — Ed Dwyer — a 1957 graduate of Purdue came to St. Joseph’s in 1959 as assistant football coach and head wrestling coach. Dwyer holds a master’s de¬ gree from Purdue and was assistant coach there before he came to St. Joe. Jim Holstein, former member of the Fort Wayne Pistons, first came to St. Joseph’s in 1959 as as¬ sistant football and basketball coach and head baseball coach. This was his first year as head basketball coach. A 1952 graduate of the Univer¬ sity of Cincinnati, he also served this year as head golf coach and assistant football coach. Don Merki returned this year to his alma mater as varsity baseball coach. Along with his diamond knowledge came his experience and ability on the hardwood court. The versatile Merki, a holder of St. Joseph’s and ICC basketball records and a 1953-55 member of the all-ICC squad, served this year as freshman basketball and football coach and assistant varsity basketball coach. He was also director of the St. Joseph’s intramural program. BALLS ST Ki OUT PORTS The 1961 Puma football team did not compile a glorious record. In fact, it did not even compile a mediocre one. However, and this is very significant, how¬ ever, it was a team that just could not get the timely break. Long drives ended in frustration within the ten-yard line. Punts into the wind sailed backward. Fate, misfortune, and rookie mistakes combined to hamper the Pumas. Nevertheless, one of the unfortunate aspects of sports is that the record does not indicate the performance. The 1-7 record of the 1961 St. Joseph’s football team was not much to be proud of. The team was. An Indiana State back finds tough going as he hits the Puma line. The 1961-62 basketball Pumas. The Pumas, under the direction of a new mentor, finished the 1961-62 season with a 7-14 rec¬ ord and only one win in the conference. It was also a heartbreaking year. Eight of the Pumas’ losses were by margins of ten points or less, including two “hard luck†overtime losses. Yet, despite the disheartening losses, the hardwood Pumas found heartening support from die-hard fans who backed their team to the wire, coming back week after week, game after game to pack the fieldhouse. Assistant Director SeminaKiann There is on campus a group of forty-one young men who are students for the Priesthood in the Society of the Precious Blood. They spend two or three years of their training here, at Saint Jo¬ seph’s. After this they go on to spend one year at Saint Mary’s Novitiate in Burkettsville, Ohio, and six years at the major seminary in Carthagena, Ohio. Then they are ordained and have one more year of pastoral studies at the university of Detroit. It takes a long time to become a priest, but time passes fast in the busy seminary routine and few priests there are who do not regard their seminary days as enjoyable. --V Dick Krupa, Bill Elliott, and Galen Setzkorn. Bob Kenny, Jim Marchal, and Steve Gossin. The position of the seminarian on campus is similar to that of the priest in the world, he must be “in it but not of it.†The seminarians partici¬ pate in the intellectual advantages of a college campus and also in as many of the cultural op¬ portunities as are compatible with their schedule. They will often be found to be busy about many things, for the seminary program, as can be seen from these and the preceding pages, consists of a wide variety of religious, academic, and physical activities. Miniii However, amidst this hustle and bustle of action, the seminarian must strive to be at all times con¬ scious of his goal in life and to govern his conduct accordingly. It isn’t always easy, in fact it very seldom is; but a hundredfold reward in this world and life everlasting in the next is promised to those who persevere. Heliqious Activities Father William H. McAvoy, S.J., was this year’s retreat master. His retreat series was judged by most to have been very fruitful and sometimes even somewhat entertaining. Father Lubeley incensing the palms prior to the Palm Sunday procession. The palms were later distributed in chapel. Father Gross preaching the sermon on opening day. Father Kramer celebrating a Mass facing the people in the semi¬ public oratory. There are many opportunities here at the College to participate in the Church ' liturgy. The Sunday Mass program provides sung Masses and Dialogue Masses each week. Also, daily Masses are said at six, seven, eleven, and twelve o’clock. Every evening there is Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament fol¬ lowed by the public recitation of the Rosary. Students are urged to attend this last service at least once weekly. The solace of the con¬ fessional is also available every evening and many of the campus priests take a turn in hearing confessions so that a large selection of confessors is possible. This was the culmination of many years of hard work on the part of many who wished to see higher learning made available to the people of the Calumet area. The accomplishment of this task not only made possible the attainment of a degree, but it also provided facilities for those seeking further education in the form of non¬ credit courses and lectures. From its establishment in September, 1951, to May of 1960, the Center was conduct¬ ing courses in the classrooms of Bishop Noll High School in Hammond, Indiana. On May 9, 1960, negotiations were completed which provided for the purchase of a build- ing at 4721 Indianapolis Boulevard in East Chicago, Ind. By September of the same year, the building had been remodeled and was able to facilitate classes for the up and coming semester. This present structure also houses the library and reading room, ad¬ ministrative offices, faculty and counseling rooms, student lounge, art studio, and book store. The Calumet Center is now serving over 500 students of which approximately one- fifth are full time. These students, in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree are at present tak¬ ing almost 4,000 credit hours of college work. REVEREND HENRY J. MARTIN, C.PP.S.
