As President ot St. Joseph's Prep and as Rector ot the Gesu Parish, Father Cawley, S.J., has given to the student body an out- standing, concrete example ot progressive administration. Under his direction, marked improvements have been made in both the school and church. By the individual student, however, Father will be most remembered tor his ingratiatihg smile and spontaneous wit dis- played in his frequent talks to the students, whether in a group or individually on the corridors. What prepper could ever tor- get The etymology of this word, or, Once there were two lrishmen in Arch- bald 7 To the taculty, moreover, Father Cawley has always represented the ideal ot tatherly kindness and deep-rooted humility, the generous servant of the servants ot Christ. To the senior class in particular, Father has taught an impressive lesson in unseltish, energetic, and capable leadership. We, the graduating class, pray that we may one day imitate these personitied virtues in the tuture fields ot our choosing. Reaeaeml Zdzlfliczm 4. Gaalaam, S. paincqzal Behind 'the desk in the front office, 'there sits one in whose hands lies the responsi- bility of coordinating and expediting the alifairs of the school, a man whose con- cern is the education of over seven hun- drey boys of all sizes and descriptions. His task is to ensure that 'rheir high school years will be profitable and rewarding. And this he has done. Under Fr. Graham's guiding hand the school flour- ished: spiril' and loyalty has been strength- ened, this tired old building has been revitalized-the Student Chapel, the new smoking room-and 'rhe Student Council has been given a new lease on life. Those who have met Father on official business lmow that he is strict withoul being severe, and that he is personally in- teresfed in the individual student. Fr. Under the very capable direction of Mr. Arthur Gordon, S.J., the Prep debaters met some of the most formidable competition in the country. On their shoulders rested the obligation of defending the championships won last year at Valley Forge, in the City and District Contests, East- ern Seaboard Finals, and K. of C. competition. The backbone of the Barbelin was the number and excellence of the senior debaters. Ed Reading started the ball rolling with his triumph in the l Speak tor Democracy Contest, which yielded a scholarship to LaSalle'College and a tine trophy for Ed, and a TV set for the school. Two days later the Preppers returned from Penn with six wins out of eight debates. ln February two full teams swept the Crimson and Gray to victory in the Red Bank Tourney with the phenomenal score of l2 tor l2. As for the Student Congress, the Prep has won gold medals, awards, and honors at every session. ln general, the year was tilled with successful ventures at the Prep Invitation Tourney, at St. Peter's, Fordham, Temple, Valley Forge and CYO, and crowned with success in City, District, and Eastern Seaboard Championships. Nor have the Walsh debaters been inactive. Mr. James Devereux, S.J., has molded the frosh and soph debaters into a formidable aggre- gation which will soon win prominence in the local circuit. Their most outstanding achievement was at the Camden Catholic Tourna- ment-I6 wins in I8 debates. The senior debaters are greatly indebted to Mr. Gordon for the way he has guided the school to honor, and we wish continued suc- cess to Mr. Devereux. Q' , VHQN.. w: I yn '. Following the high standards of lasl' year's Cape and Sword, the Dramatic Club chose Edmond Ros'fand's im- mortal Cyrano de Bergerac for this year's presentation. Much to the delight of the many Cape and Sword mem: bers, the play called for 'lwenty-five actors and all the bud- ding Barrymores had a chance to display their talents. ln this live act production with barely six weeks of rehearsal, the Cape and Sword did a magnificent iob and all gave spendid performances. The cast headed by Jim Baleman as Cyrano, Vince Byrne who played Roxanne and Bill Currie Christian, deserve much credit for their many hours of hard work spent in preparing for the show. Of course equal praise must be extended 'lo those who worked behind the scenes painting scenery, securing props, and in general, taking care of everything. Under the able hand of Mr. McGinty, S.J., the entire Stage Crew did a lerriffic job and without their help, Cyrano would never have been the success that it was. Our sincere congralulalions io all who worked on the show and special thanks to Mr. Alagia, S.J., the moderator of the Cape and Sword who directed the play, which was really the toughest job of all. Besides the annual show, 'rhe Cape and Sword also held its own lnter- Class One Act Play Contest.
